The Black Sea Coast region
Sunny Beach Costal Resort Sunny Beach boasts 2Okm of yellow sanded beach with gently shelving blue sea. Parasols and sun beds are available for a reasonable fee. The entire length of the promenade is flanked with bars, restaurants and shops - very touristy and usually very loud. However, reasonable good quality European dishes can be found at a reasonable cost. You can also find plentiful children's entertainment in the form of extreme trampoline, simulators, play apparatus, etc. The central pier is the starting point for small open 'ferry' boat trips. The main location is to Nessebar Old Town, and is approximately 20 minutes boat trip on fairly calm waters. These trips are frequent, approximately every 20 minutes, and 10 per person. The beach itself is a good spot for. a day out, and the sea is usually pleasantly warm. However, we were concerned that there didn't appear to be any 'lanes' system for jet skis and water sports, so we wondered how safe it was for vulnerable swimmers. We preferred to swim in the sea in Nessebar Old Town'; where there were no water sports, and was less commercialised.
Bourgas area
Nessebar Old Town In our opinion, one of the most beautiful places in the world! Access to Nessebar Old Town is by taxi, private car, boat trip from Sunny Beach, or open Trolley Car. We did not try the Trolley Car, but it runs frequently from Sunny Beach town to Nessebar, and a change of trolley bus is required at a half way point. The 20 minute boat trip was our favourite. Once there, it resembles an island, cut off by all but a link road from Nessebar new town. t is a small island, which can be easily walked around, weather permitting. It has shingle beaches, and gently shelving waters for swimming. Everywhere you look in Nessebar you will see lively bars and restaurants, and the sea. The sea views are breath-taking. The restaurants are all draped in bright flowers and vines, and the staff are welcoming, attentive, but not pushy. The best bars/tavernas are not in the immediate area by the link road, but the farther you go towards the far end of the island; the more interesting and quaint the eating houses become: they are built into the hill, and boast dramatic views over the beaches, sea, and fishing harbours. Seafood restaurants are particularly good. There are also some lovely old shops selling traditional Bulgarian goods - lovely to browse, and a pleasant change from all the usual tourist rubbish! There are two water parks in the Sunny Beach area. We didn't have time to visit either, but both are within 20 minutes drive from Nessebar Gardens. One is clearly visible from the road between the airport and Sunny Beach, and looks very inviting. The other park is called Action Water Park and is closer to Nessebar Gardens. Bulgarian Evening A definite MUST for all ages. An enjoyable evening for the whole family. We were transferred by private car to the 'Biala Riaka', a Bulgarian village, near the village of Giliovcy. There was a drive of approximately 40 minutes, taking us over the mountains dividing the country, and was a wonderful view of the real Bulgaria; our Guide filled us in on local culture, traditions, Bulgarian lifestyles and the Bulgarian way of life. On arrival, we were shown historical trades of weaving, cavving, ceramics and pottery, produce making etc, and there was the opportunity to buy their goods. Following this we were escorted into a huge open arena with tables and seating surrounding. We were then entertained by local entertainers (in 5 languages!), clowns, games and interactive fun for the children. A four course traditional Bulgarian meal followed, with unlimited red or white wine. Following dinner there was an exceptional display of traditional Bulgarian dancing with a talented troupe of about 20 dancers. The evening was rounded off with a demonstration of the increasingly rarely performed traditional 'Fire Dance' - do not try this at home! All in all, a very good evening.
