The Black Sea Coast region
Bourgas Bourgas is the 4th largest city in Bulgaria and is situated in the south-eastern part of the country. The climate is continental, influenced by the Black Sea. Due to its location, Bourgas has developed into a trade and tourism centre. The coast is obviously one of the major attractions of Bourgas and the city is the main starting point for coastal holidays. What mostly attracts people here is undoubtedly the sea. The Sea Garden which rivals the one in Varna, the cathedral of St. St. Cyril and Methodius with lavish decorations of mural paintings and frescos, the Armenian Church, the catholic cathedral, the churches of St. Deva Maria and St. Ivan Rilski, the natural science museum, the Philharmonic orchestra and the art gallery. The city beach in the proximity of the sea garden is a very busy and visited place. There is a whole range of bars, restaurants, cafeterias, entertainments and sport facilities on one side and the natural tourist attraction- the golden sand, on the other. The dark colour of the sand on the seacoast of Bourgas is due to the tingle of magnetic alloys which have a very curative effect.
Kraimorie The village of Kraimorie (once named Kafka) is located to the south of Bourgas on the way to the old fortress of Pirgos. There is a beautiful beach near the village with a variety of gift shops selling all of your holiday needs from buckets and spades to windbreaks and sun tan lotions, and when it time to cool down there are many bars and restaurants, all you need to cool and refresh you ready for another spell of relaxation and play at the seaside.
Nessebar The old town of Nessebar is based on a small piece of land at the end of Sunny Beach on the Black Sea Coast. The town is one of the most visited places on the coast and dates back to before Medieval times. Nessebar was included in the Bulgarian states in the year 812. Due to the important monuments located within the town, in 1983 the town was included in the World Cultural Inheritance of UNESCO. Important places to see include 9 churches and the fortified walls. Nessebar is accessed via a causeway leading from Sunny Beach. It takes about 30 minutes to walk from Sunny Beach, alternatively you could take a taxi or the tourist train. The train stops at the beautiful harbour which is still a working fishing port to this day. The small fishing boats bring in fresh fish for the local restaurants. The harbour is overlooked by several quality restaurants and cafes. As you approach the town you will see the fortified walls and on your right is the museum. The streets of Nessebar as narrow and winding. They are lined with tiny shops and homes built in the traditional Bulgaria style of half timber-half stone. Local laws dictate that any new property in the town or property being restored must be in total character with the original buildings.
Sozopol The ancient city of Sozopol is located along the Black Sea Coast and is proving to be one of the best places to visit in Bulgaria. Originally named Apollonia, Sozopol is the oldest city on the Black Sea Coast with a fascinating history dating back to 610BC. It enjoys a dramatic location on a headland that stretches out to sea. The city not only boasts an impressive coastline but a wealth of architecture. The old town in particular has become a real tourist attraction. The traditional cobbled lanes wind their way through the town, lined with stone walls and old houses. Your first call should be at the museum where you will be given an insight into life in Bulgaria over the centuries. The museum has a wide range of Apollonian artefacts. There are ample small cafes and restaurants to sample in Sozopol and a good selection of shops. As a holiday destination, Sozopol offers a family atmosphere with three impressive beaches. The largest and busiest beach is Central Beach located between the old and new town. Two kilometres north you will find the Royal Beach and the Harmani Beach.
Bourgas / Marinka area
The Village of Marinka and the Environs The village of Marinka itself has a number of village shops, bars / cafes and is only a 5 minute drive from the beach town of Kraimorie and a 15 minute drive from the cosmopolitan city of Burgas, which has an international airport. The stunning internationally renowned heritage sites of Nessebar and Sozopol are only 25 and 40 minutes drive away respectively and there is a world famous nature reserve, which attracts bird watchers from many different countries, on the doorstep.
