The Dordogne region
The Dordogne in Aquitaine is one of France's best-kept secrets, with numerous castles, chateaux, and other important historical sites with breath-taking scenery.
There are tennis courts in the village and riding stables nearby and an 18-hole golf course 20 minutes away. You can hire a canoe/kayak locally or further along the River Dronne. The quiet roads and beautiful countryside make it an ideal place for walking and cycling and there are lots of local markets to visit daily throughout the summer months.
The ancient village of Bourdeilles surrounds its château and looks down on the town's clustered roofs, the weir and boat shaped mill and along the Dronne. There are four restaurants and a café in the village. Ten minutes drive away is the charming little market town of Brantôme, known as the Venice of Périgord with its ancient abbey tucked under a cliff. Walk through the gardens and along the pleasant river banks or enjoy a boat trip on the river. It's a good place to stop for lunch.
Northeast of Brantôme lies the hamlet of Villars where you'll find the Château de Puyhuilhem, and a short distance away the Grottes de Villars with impressive stalactites and stalagmites and a few prehistoric paintings. St Jean de Côle, reputed to be one of the prettiest villages in France, is also worth a visit.
