The Poitou-Charentes region
Ideally situated in the Poitou-Charente's micro-climate, yet close to the chateaux and stunning scenery of the Loire Valley. The Loire Valley, known as the Garden of France, is famous for its scores of romantic Chateaux which sit between the river and the undulating vineyards. The Anjou wine region combines the culture of centuries, with a great number of fascinating wine 'domaine's to be explored.....and the region is steeped in history, with so much to see and do.
The cottage is 250 meters from the village of Bouille-Loretz. In Bouille-Loretz there is a bakery, general store and deli/butcher. Banks, restaurants and supermarkets are all available in Thouars or Montreuil-Bellay, which are 10 mins by car. There is a doctor's surgery in Bouille-Loretz, or alternatively, an English speaking doctor in Cersay, just 5 minutes drive away. We are just 20 mins drive from the historical Loire town of Saumur. Between 10-15 mins drive away are the towns of Doue La Fontaine (which has an excellent zoo), Montreuil-Bellay (beautiful chateau) and Thouars which is an historic market town. All of these towns have much to see and do. The cottage is only about an hour away from two of the most popular family attractions in Europe, the Puy de Fou historical adventure theme park and the Futuroscope, science fiction theme park. Just a little further afield are the towns of Chinon,Fontevraud and Angers with their strong connections to English history.
In the local area, there are a number of wineries offering tasting and cellar-door sales. With so much unspoilt countryside, open fields, gentle hills and woodland our region is ideal for walkers or cyclists and the wildlife is abundant. If history and architecture are your interests, you will be spoilt for choice with so many stunning chateaux and old towns to explore.

"A great Place to stay with really nice hosts."
My wife and 2 teenage sons stayed at Phil and Janets place in July 2012. After many hours of searching the internet for a place that we thought would fit the bill for all our needs, we booked a 2 week in stay in the Farmers Cottage. Our expectations where high and we where not let down one little bit. The unassuming way of Phil and Janet, coupled with the beautiful cottage and surrounding buildings made it a place of pure serenity. When we needed them, our hosts where always attentive and helpful, but never overpowering. The cottage had everything that we required, being furnished to a very high standard with all the amenities that we required. Even the beds were excellent and comfy. The garden area was great to play games and the pool was fantastic.
Phil and Janet give us tips and advice on places to visit and even invited us into their beautiful home one evening to explain the extensive history of their own house and surrounding buildings. The dogs were great to play with and greeted us with great enthusiasm and even came to sit down on the bench. It was again a nice touch to the place.
We travelled around a lot to see many different places to enjoy the local sights and flavours of the region. Angers city (50 mins drive) was a great place to spend a day, as well Chinnon (40 min drive). Montreuil- Bellay was a also a nice place to visit (15 min drive) just for a coffee overlooking the chateau. It also has few good restaurants and a great supermarket. A wine tasting afternoon at Caves Saumur was also very enjoyable.
We have had a few good holidays in Europe, but we can honestly say that this was one of the best. This was certainty due to the fact that Phil and Janet where just perfect hosts and at the end of our stay, we where sorry to leave. Phil and Janet are now busy with their second project (which we had the good fortune to visit and be guided around) and I just know that they will make a fantastic job of the restorations and also make it a place to visit in the future.
Thanks once again for a perfect holiday

"Lovely gite in beautiful grounds with perfect hosts!"
We stayed at Farmer's Cottage for a week in June 2012 with our 15 month old daughter. On arrival Janet and Phil were very welcoming and showed us round the gite and grounds as well as giving us a welcome pack of goodies. The gite was really well equipped and had everything we needed and more. It was also extremely comfortable with great beds and a powerful shower, two things important to us on holiday. The rear of the property which was private was very large with a lovely pool area. We also enjoyed sitting out to the front of the property which overlooks the main house and being entertained by the playful dogs. The photos do not do the gardens justice.
Janet and Phil perfected being attentive without being obtrusive and were also always friendly, helpful and happy!
There is plenty to do in the area and lots of nice places to eat. We enjoyed Saumur and Montreuil-Bellay as places to visit.
We will definately return to this gite and do not hesitate in recommending it.
