The St Philip Parish region
St Philip is the largest parish in Barbados, in recent times it has been undergoing more development but it maintains its country lifestyle and has a lot of offer visitors. It has many attractions such as Sunbury plantation house, a chance to see how the planters lived, you can even have a lunch or supper there with entertainment.
The Crane is also nearby with its beach and hotel, one of the oldest on the island. As with the rest of the island there are many rum shops dotted around the parish where you can enjoy a drink and chat to the locals about their local passion, cricket!
The villa is located some 15-20 minutes away from the airport. A car is essential to appreciate the island particularly if you are only there for a short time, however there is a frequent bus service into the capital Bridgetown. If you do decide to hire a car you will find petrol is reasonably priced locals are very accommodating to tourists and are more than happy to direct you and to give advice on places to visit.
Emerald city the local shopping centre offers supermarket, banks, post office, DVD rental, petrol station and fast food outlet. Further along the east coast, the landscape changes and is rugged and windswept east coast road and bathesheba are popular spots for locals to picnic and you often see windsurfers braving the big waves a truly beautiful part of Barbados.
Further afield there is the stunning and exclusive west coast where you may see a celebrity as Simon Cowell, Tiger Woods and others have frequented the area and often spend the winter season there. It will usually take around 45 minutes to get to the west coast, where there are many restaurants and amazing beaches.
Bottom Bay area
From July to the 1st week of August Barbados is buzzing with crop over, a carnival which is held every year which originally celebrated the harvesting of the sugar cane crop. There are shows, cultural events and a big parade which are fun to look at and to take part in.
There are often cricket tournaments, national and off course international. The new Kensington oval in the capital Bridgetown offers a great day out.
Bromlea is located in St Philip the largest parish in Barbados which stretches from the south-east to the east coast, its location means it is blessed with lovely breezes which keep you cool particularly at night, the house does have a/c and ceiling fans if required.
Places of interest I would recommend the Oistins Friday night fish fry, this is approx 30 minutes drive away from Bromlea and offers some of the best fish on the island cooked the way you want it, washed down with local juices, beers or of course rum!
In the local area there is the Crane Beach and Hotel, probably the most famous hotel on the island and one of the most beautiful beaches, just minutes away by car; they also have a restaurant there.
How to get there
There are flights to Barbados every day from England on Virgin and British Airways, charter companies such as Thomas Cook fly weekly. There are easy connections to and from Europe to England North America is well served by AA and Continental as well as Air Canada.
There are a number of car hire companies in Barbados and my agent will be happy to arrange car hire at reasonable terms. She will meet you at the airport if you do not have car hire.
Bromlea, Atlantic Rising in Bottom Bay is approximately 20 minutes away from Grantley Adams International airport.
I would recommend a car if you want to appreciate Barbados fully as Bottom Bay is on a quiet part of the island away from the traditional tourist hotspots. However, there is a regular bus service and taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced in Barbados.
