Home description

Bougan Villa is a newly completed house situated in a small and quiet development in Bottom Bay on the unspoilt SE coast of Barbados. The house has been finished to a high standard and has all the accommodation and facilities needed to ensure that visitors have an amazing holiday on this beautiful island.

The Atlantic breeze on this side of the island means that even on the hottest days the temperatures are comfortable. Bottom Bay beach (voted as being in The Times' and Conde Nast's top-ten best beaches in the world) with its white sands and coconut palms is 3 minutes amble away. Harrismith, Palmetto and Long Bay (our personal favourite) are also stunning beaches which are just a short stroll.

For those of you looking for exciting night life and fine dining, the busier South and West coasts are a brief car/taxi/bus ride away. For the surfers amongst you a trip to the legendary Soup Bowl at Bathsheba on the East coast is a must, and is only 20 minutes drive away.

The well equipped kitchen contains all you need to prepare a six course banquet or a simple G&T! All three of the bedrooms are air conditioned and the master suite consists of a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite shower room. The inside living area is comfortable, light and airy and leads out onto the shady extended terrace which is perfect for lazy days and al fresco dining overlooking the private pool with surrounding deck and large lawned garden. The views from the raised deck area are even better... the perfect place to enjoy the sun rise or set.

The St Philip Parish region

Our house is located in St. Philip - the largest parish on the island of Barbados, situated on the beautiful SE coast.

There are many varied and wonderful attractions and activities on the island of Barbados, many of which can be found in all the best travel guides and on tourist websites. Rather than repeat all of this readily available information, we thought we'd share with you our favourites and recommendations :

Bottom Bay beach (of course!) - just a few hundred yards from the house.

Long Bay beach - in the shadow of Sam Lord's castle - expansive stretch of sand deserted most of the time. It has a natural swimming pool at the North end which is sheltered from the waves by a rocky barrier meaning that the water is calm making it great for kids.

The local speciality, rum, is very cheap on the island, and there are many types – the Four Square distillery is very close by and is great to visit. Rum shacks are everywhere on the island, and are quite an experience! Our favourite is Helene's Watering Hole at the entrance to St Lawrence Gap ("Absolut" advertising all over it!)

When it comes to dining, you really are spoilt for choice in Barbados. Some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean (and some suggest the world!) are a short drive away.

Bottom Bay area

One of the most beautiful beaches in the world right on the doorstep!

Bottom Bay is a quiet location with a small local shop and bar at Wellhouse, which is about 1km away as well as several other local rum shacks. 5 minutes drive away is the Six Roads Shopping Complex with bank, post office, supermarket, fast-food restaurant and other retail outlets.

Other suggestions/recommendations further afield :

Earthworks Pottery and it's associated art gallery is an interesting visit, and also a nice spot for tea or lunch and a Banks beer in its treehouse cafe.

Bajans love sport, and the undisputed island favourite is cricket. If you are lucky enough to be on the island for a big test match, try and get tickets to the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown.

Golf - the Island has many famous courses, but the best and most challenging (according to the local pros) is at the Barbados Golf Club on the South of the island. If you're as proficient at golf as we are, then you might prefer crazy golf at Ocean Park (aquarium), on the route to Oistins from the house!

Horse racing is very popular, and meets are held by the Barbados Turf Club every two weeks on a Saturday at the Garrison Savannah racecourse. This is a great day out.

While at the Garrison you may notice one of the Barbados national sports fields - the national team rugby pitch! Barbados is a great venue for touring rugby sides, and on Saturdays there will usually be a local match being played as the horse-racing goes on around it. The rugby club will be open so pop in and say hello to the players and club members. The national side (current Caribbean Champions) came within a cat's whisker of qualifying for Rugby World Cup 2007, and are hopeful for further success in the future.

There are many great sailing trips departing from Bridgetown, and a trip on the Cool Runnings catamaran (with stops for turtles and snorkelling) is a very enjoyable excursion.

Brian Talma's "Beach Culture - De Action Shop" at Silver Rock (Silver Sands) where you can learn to kite-surf or wind-surf is a great find, where you can participate or just watch "de Action" with a beer.

On the East of the island Bathsheba, Soup Bowl (surfing championships held there) and Cattlewash exemplify the rugged coastal landscape and are breathtaking. Andromeda Gardens is also close by and has many examples of the amazing local flora.

Guestbook for Bougan Villa

"We had a lovely time and truly enjoyed ourselves. The house was very clean and bright and the use of your outdoor spaces kept us basking (or avoiding) the lovely sunny weather. Especially pleasant was your elevated deck which allowed us to watch the sun rise and set every day" BH, Dec 2008

"Just wanted to say that we loved staying at your Villa and we had the most amazing time. My children loved the place and the pool. You have a beautiful place with lovely furnishings...and all the essentials were there! Very refreshing." RA, Nov 2008

"Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our time at Bougan Villa... pool was excellent, especially for our daughter who rarely got out of it and G & T's on the deck or terrace were the norm each evening." RL, July 2008

"Heaven!!! Super super time in your fantastic place, thank you. The real difference for me is in your taste which just makes the entire experience more welcoming and relaxing." LJ, April 2008

"We both had a wonderful time at Bougan Villa and the walk you recommended was one of the highlights." PH, March 2008

"Wonderful spot - new, spotless and with everything you need for the perfect holiday in the sun! Best of all 2 minutes walk from the nicest (and one of the quietest!) beaches in Barbados." PS, December 2007
