The Smithy, a traditional slate built semi-detached 3 bedroom Lakeland Cottage was built some 300 years ago and, as the name suggests, was originally a Smithy. Situated in the beautiful Borrowdale valley, it has been fully refurbished to make a real home from home, the perfect place for those who want a relaxed self-catering holiday in the heart of the Lake District National Park and a chance to "chill-out" and "re-charge the batteries".

Inside Details

3 Bedrooms - Master with King size bed, Bedroom 2 with 4' divan (luxury single or cosy double) and downstairs bedroom with single bed. All beds have luxury Egyptian Cotton linen. A travel cot is available (please provide own bedding).

Fully equipped kitchen with ceramic hob, oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washing machine/dryer. Adjoining dining area with seating for 4 people.

Bathroom with bath and shower over, basin, WC, heated towel rail. Upstairs cloakroom with basin, WC, heated towel rail.

Lounge has 2 2-seater sofas, flat screen TV, DVD, CD and Ipod docking station. Free Wi-Fi.

Lounge and bedrooms all have storage heaters and the lounge also has a multi-fuel stove. The Bathroom, Kitchen and Dining Room have underfloor heating. Electricity is included and solid fuel is provided.

Bed linen is provided but please bring own towels and tea-towels.

No smoking and pets not allowed.

The Lake District

The Lake District is England's largest National Park and an area of outstanding natural beauty with wonderful lakes and mountains including Scafell Pike the highest mountain in England.

The area has many historic sites such as Castlerigg Stone Circle, castles and historic houses and easy access to Hadrian's Wall. The Lake District also has many beautiful gardens and visitor attractions including the homes of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

Of course the main attraction is the beautiful landscape and it is very accessible with hundreds of paths suitable for all levels of ability, many cycle trails, boats to hire to explore the lakes, or steamers for leisurely cruises on Derwentwater, Ullswater and Windermere.


The Borrowdale valley is situated some 4 miles from Keswick at the end of Derwentwater. It is claimed by many, including the famous walker Alfred Wainwright, to be the most beautiful valley in the Lake District and is noted for the ancient oak woodland that clothes the valley slopes. The valley is home to a range of wildlife including deer and red squirrels.

There are a number of picturesque villages such as Grange(15 minutes walk from The Smithy),Rosthwaite and Seatoller. Grange and Rosthwaite both have excellent cafes. A shuttle bus travels between Keswick and Seatoller on a regular basis providing easy access if you don't want to take the car.

There are numerous walks directly from the cottage including the popular Catbells and paths around the lake to Keswick. Access to the higher fells such as Great Gable,Glaramara and the Scafells is further down the valley.

At the end of the valley is the Honister Pass, with its slate mine (open to visitors), which leads to the picturesque Buttermere valley.

Keswick is a thriving, lively market town with a wide range of shops, pubs and restaurants. Other attractions include a Leisure Centre with swimming pool, cinema and the excellent Theatre By The Lake.

For more local facilities,the Borrowdale Hotel is 5 minutes walk from the cottage and is open to non-residents. The Lodore Hotel is only a short distance away and their spa facilities are open to non-residents.

"We must agree: "The best square mile in the lakeland.""

The cottage is very well presented with every amenity, a lot of thought has gone into it, to make your time there more comfortable. It is set in a perfect location for walking, cycling and many more outdoor pursuits. Located on a good bus route and 4 miles from the town of Keswick where there are many good shops, pubs and restaurants. We hope to return again!

"We Will Be Returning"

We loved our time there, the house was superbly appointed and fitted out with extreme care, everything worked so well, it was so well presented, stunning views, nice to have new furnishings. We do aim to return again - it was so well located for all our walking. A very peaceful location. The only issue that was problematic was no mobile service but house has free WiFi. Incredibly well appointed and comfy extras like books, maps, décor knickknacks were tastefully thought out and made for a VERY comfortable stay.
