The charming 17th Century farmhouse offers great accommodation with large living and entertaining areas, a natural garden and a river running along its boundary. The Farmhouse DOES NOT have a private swimming pool, however, the Restaurant in the village - C'al Alsina has a swimming pool which serves the village and welcomes all guests from Can Raverder. There is a nominal charge to use the swimming pool. The Pool is open from Late June until September each year.

The village of Creixell (Borrassa) is situated in Catalonia (Catalunya). Catalonia is an autonomous region in Spain situated in the northeast along the Mediterranean coastline. It borders France to the North across the Pyrenees.

ABOUT THE FARMHOUSE:

This rustic and charming Catalan farmhouse is generously proportioned with large living quarters spread over three floors. The Ground Floor, where the pigs, cows, bull, rabbits, chickens and the donkey inhabited, now consists of two comfortable living rooms with original vaulted ceilings and a further large L shaped room. This room serves as another living space and has a reading corner. It has also been used as a Yoga exercise room and even a dancefloor!

The Living rooms are furnished with large comfortable sofas and chairs upholstered in red and beige and having a distinctive oriental and far east flavour. The second living room has a card/games table as well as a large teak cupboard which houses a TV, CD/casette player and a large assortment of videos and DVD's. The formal entrance hall is arrived at through a 2ft thick stone doorway. The thick walls keep the rooms cool during the hot summers and warm in the winters. Through another archway there is a long room with 3 large granite containers dating from the 1600's. These decorative features were originally used to press grapes and store both the wine and olive oil produced by the family. The wet room is located in this area.

COOKING AND DINING:

To the right of the central salon on the first floor is the Dining/Breakfast room where you can eat or sit on comfy sofas and watch TV beside a roaring fire (for those of you who wish to stay during the winter months of course!). The well equipped Kitchen has an electric ceramic hob and oven, microwave, 4 slice toaster, electric kettle, blender etc. An antique French Armoire houses a large collection of Danish Blue for large dinner parties or simply 'High Tea'. Just off the kitchen is one of the two covered terraces with lovely views of the neighbours' allotments.

ACCOMMODATION:

Off the central Salon are 4 Bedrooms, 2 double bedrooms, 1 twin bedroom and a rather unique one which has been created in the hayloft. From the hayloft through a wide archway there is a further room which can be curtained off to provide another sleeping area or a sitting/dressing/reading room. The hayloft has an open plan en-suite and a loo with a view! All the bedrooms are individually decorated e.g. the French room or 'Jugenstil' room to mention two.

The aptly named 'Jamaica Suite' occupies the second floor with its King size Mahogany bed and numerous Jamaican prints. In the en-suite bathroom, the Victorian style double ended bath on ball and claw feet takes pride of place. The washing machine is also located in this bathroom as the patio off this bedroom doubles up as the open air drying area.

The Catalunia region

ABOUT CREIXELL:

Situated in the province of Girona in Catalonia, the village of Creixell dates back from medieval times and has always had strong farming connections. Nowadays the medieval architecture still exists but with modern day stylish catalan interiors.

The village lies between a river and open expanse of cultivated farmland. In the centre of the village is 'El Moli' the old mill house which had provided electricity for the whole region. Essential to the mill house was its pond which today is home to a family of ducks and carp. The land adjoining with its carefully planted plane trees comes alive in May and September, May for the International 'Allioli' making competition and September for the 'Sardana' (national Catalan dance) festival. All this a stones throw from the house.

The church which dates from the 1700's celebrates mass only on special holidays and is very interesting to visit with its benches inscribed with the names of the families that gifted them to the church more than 300 years ago.

On the hillside overlooking the village and farmlands is the restaurant 'Cal Alsina' which serves typical Catalan cuisine including 'Botifara'- catalan sausages. It is especially popular for midday lunch and serves dinner from 8.00p.m. The swimming pool is open from the beginning of June until October and is a short walk from the house. There is also free WiFi internet connection for all Can Raverder guests!

BORRASSA:

The village of Creixell does not have any shops but only 0.5km nearby is Borrassa, the main town. Here you will find 2 supermarkets which offer fresh local produce and friendly owners to welcome you to the area. There is also a well stocked chemist and an excellent butchers.

In the centre of town there is a beautiful building dating from the 11th/12th Century. This magnificent building is the local church.

WALKING ROUTES - CREIXELL:

Catalonia has a network of approximately 9,000 km of waymarked paths. These consist of long distance, short distance and local paths. This is a wonderful way to discover the history and marvel at the natural beauty of the region.

These paths were originally used by shepherds, traders and armies and more importantly by pilgrims. At the entrance to Creixell from the Nacional N11 you will see a signpost. To the left is the path - Cami de Sant Jaume per Montserrat via Girona. The way of St. James is the route taken by pilgrims to arrive at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

To the right and running through the village of Creixell is the way to Sant Pere de Rodes, where there is a monument of a Benedictine Monastery with origins dating back to the 9th Century and is located in the Natural Park of Cap de Creus. These paths can be enjoyed by all ages either for a stroll or for long hiking/cycling trips.
