Home description

This rustic Catalan farmhouse sits on approximately 1/2 acre of natural garden with a river running along
its boundary. It is generously proportioned and is spread over three floors. The Ground Floor where the family's livestock was kept now consists of three comfortable living rooms with original vaulted ceilings.

On the first floor, there is a central Salon from which 4 Bedrooms are reached with a further bedroom suite on the top floor. A rather unique bedroom has been created in what was the hayloft. Also on the first floor is the Dining/Breakfast room where you can eat or sit on comfy sofas and watch TV beside a roaring fire if visiting during the cooler months.

This rustic home offers a tranquil space for those wanting to escape the hustle & bustle, whilst being near to many varied activities close to home.

The Costa Brava/Catalonia region

The village of Creixell (Borrassa) is situated in Catalonia (Catalunya). Catalonia is an autonomous region in Spain situated in the northeast along the Mediterranean coastline. It borders France to the North across the
Pyrenees.

The Catalonian coastline differs immensely having both high cliffs and deep coves to be found in the north and vast areas of white sandy beaches to the south. Interesting natural landscapes to visit are Cap Creus, Bay of Roses and Cadaques. This area is also known to holidaymakers as the Costa Brava.

Figueras is the closest main town to the village and offers a good selection of restaurants serving typical catalan cuisine - 'Plats Casolans'. The lunch time menus are excellently priced and usually consists of a 3 course meal. Culturally, Figueras is the birthplace of Salvador Dali and the town has an impressive Museum to honour his Surrealist works of art approximately 4,000 pieces. This region has many other interesting museums and hosts many art exhibitions. Cadaques is a haven for artists.

The city of Gerona which lies either side of the river Onyar is well known for its cafe culture and interesting narrow medieval streets and squares. It has a population of approx. 100,000 inhabitants. A walk through the walled city once home to the Jewish Medieval Community is a must as well as visiting the Arabic baths. Gerona's antique shops and expensively fitted boutiques exudes wealth and the standard of living in this area is known to be high with property prices equally so.

On the nature trail there are numerous parks (Parque Natural) to explore including Parque Natural de la Montana de Montserrat and closer Parque Natural de Aiguamolls de L'Emporda.

A half an hours drive from Creixell you find the old Roman baths of Banyoles as well as the large fresh water lake where the Barcelona Olympic rowing events took place. A short drive away are the picturesque towns of
Olot and Besalu. In Besalu the most photographed spots being of the Portcullis on the bridge leading into the walled town as well as the Romanesque carvings on Besalu's Sant Pere church.

Further north close to the french border is Valle de Nuria which during the winter months offers good skiing at a reasonable price. Located above the town of Ribes de Freser, Valle de Nuria has spectacular scenery with a
gorge and huge natural lake. Good for walkers too!!

This region has everything to offer and has proper seasons unlike the arid south. It is generally a comfortable 18-22 degrees from late February and for those seeking really hot, you will find 30-35 in summer.


Borrassa / Creixell area

27 Carrer Dr. Frigola is situated at the entrance to the village of Creixell in the province of Gerona in Catalonia (Catalunya), just off the N11 (Nacional) between Figueras and Gerona.

Creixell dates back from medieval times and has always had strong farming connections. Nowadays the medieval architecture still exists but with modern day stylish catalan interiors.

The village lies between a river and open expanse of cultivated farmland. In the centre of the village is 'El Moli' the old mill house which had provided electricity for the whole region. Essential to the mill house was its pond which today is home to a family of ducks and large carp. The land adjoining with its carefully planted plane trees comes alive in May and September, May for the International 'Allioli' making competition and September for the 'Sardana' (national Catalan dance) festival. All this abounds the house.

The church which dates from the 1700's celebrates mass only on special holidays and is very interesting to look around with its benches inscribed with the names of the families that gifted them to the church more than 300 years ago.

On the hillside overlooking the village and farmlands is the restaurant Cal 'Alsina which serves typical Catalan cuisine including 'Botifara'- catalan sausages. It is especially popular for midday lunch and serves dinner from
8.00p.m. The swimming pool is open from the beginning of June until October and is a short walk from the house.

The village does not have any shops but only 0.5km nearby is Borrassa, the main town. Here you will find 2 supermarkets which have fresh local produce and friendly owners to welcome you to the area. There is also a
well stocked chemist and an excellent butcher.

In the centre of town there is a beautiful building dating from the 11th/12th Century, when viewed, conjures up thoughts of knights in shining armour (The Knight Templars) and elite fighting monks as this area is associated with the 'Cathars'. This magnificent building is the town's local church.

Travelling to Creixell
By Car........
CREIXELL (pronounced creshell) can easily be reached travelling by car. If your journey is combined with a stopover in France, the village is located only 20 kilometres from the french border. It is just minutes away, driving south from Figueras on the Nacional N11 or Exit no. 4 off the Motorway (AP7).

Car hire can easily be arranged for pick up at any of the Airports of the region and recommended websites are:-

This region is served by two airports namely Barcelona (El Prat de Llobregat) BCN and Barcelona (Girona) GRO. The preferred airport is Girona (GRO) as it is approx. 20 kilometres from the house, a mere 20 minute drive through beautiful landscape. Barcelona (BCN) is approx. 120 kilometres away 1 3/4 Hr. , travelling on the AP7/E15 motorway. An alternative is Perpignan Airport in France which is marginally closer than Barcelona Airport.

We've all had a wonderful time in your beautiful house. I fear Lauren's bedroom back home won't come up to standard after the 'French Room'.

We stayed in Can Raverder last week and had a perfect week! The house is beautiful, we enjoyed it very much (especially the covered terrace next to the kitchen where we mostly sat: we watched the swallows grow up and fly out...and return to their nest to sleep).
