The Sofia/Rila Mountains region
Shipochane is just one hour from the Bulgarian capital Sofia. It is situated amongst beautiful pine forests on the northern slopes of the Rila mountains at the foot of the Musala Peak which rises to almost 3000m above sea level.
Bulgaria boasts some of the best mountain scenery in Europe, with many unspoiled areas in the Borovets Rila Mountain range. Borovets (15 mins from Shipochane house) is the oldest and most popular mountain resort in Bulgaria. It offers great conditions for winter sports and numerous hiking and rock climbing routes. If you are willing (and able!) you can also try to climb the Musala Peak, which is the highest peak on the Balkans.
Shipochane and Borovets are an ideal base for many winter and summer activities. The surrounding area features spectacular alpine scenery, river gorges and meadows. There are many marked trails, with mountain refuges for the adventurous. Some of the things you can do in and around Shipochane and Borovets are; skiing, snowboarding, skido's, hiking, seven Lakes, Rila monastery, horse-riding, mountain biking, and fishing.
One of the local attractions is the outdoor pool in the village of Belchin Bani, which is about 20 km away from Borovets. The pool is filled from the mineral springs which are famous for their healing qualities. The Rila and Samokov Hotels in Borovets also have large, clean indoor swimming pools, spas and gymnasiums at very cheap rates for non-guests.
In the local town of Samokov, there is a large new supermarket and Borovets has several mini-markets. Samokov also has an open air food market for local fresh produce, every day, as well as several banks, pharmacies and a post office. The food is excellent, very cheap and plentiful and there is a large selection of good Bulgarian wines, spirits and beers available at reasonable prices.

There is an English speaking pharmacy in Borovets and several others in Samokov.
