The Sofia/Rila Mountains region
Borovets is the oldest and most popular ski resort in Bulgaria and is famed for being an international family-friendly ski centre. It is located among pine forests at 1350m offering beautiful scenery along with a warm welcome wherever you go. The highest pistes are at 2600m on the Northern slopes of the Rila mountain. The Rila mountains are registered in the UN list of representative protected areas and is Bulgaria's largest national park - 81,000 hectares, two thirds of which is forested. The park contains over 100 peaks, with deep and dramatic river gorges, lakes and waterfalls. The national parks authority have marked many trails and built bridges and information boards and there are mountain chalets for hikers to shelter for the night. The area is of special interest to botanists, with a large variety of flora, including some rare species. Within 20 to30 minutes’ drive there is the highly regarded Ihtiman golf course, the nearby towns of Kostenets and Samokov, with facilities for shopping and eating out, a private airfield offering light aircraft flights over the area for about £40, and boating facilities on the very beautiful and impressive Lake Iskar. Slightly further afield is the Rila Monastery (about 90 minutes), Bulgaria’s largest and most famous monastery, founded in 927 AD and hidden high in the Rila mountains
Borovets area
Borovets offers 45 km of pistes varying in difficulty and length for skiing and snowboarding. There are ski runs for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers, designed with international markings and multilingual signs. The Borovets ski school has more than 200 ski instructors fluent in foreign languages and some of them are former professional skiers. Snow conditions are among the best in Eastern Europe The ski season runs from Dec. through to April with a snow cover of more than 1.5 mtrs. It also has snow guns for producing snow, and some slopes are floodlit for evening skiing. There are horse-drawn sleighs available for a pleasant trip around the resort. For the more adventurous, cross country and biathlon tracks, as well as ski jumps and snow mobiles (Skidoos), are available.
In addition, Borovets offers fantastic apres-ski and nightlife to suit all ages. There are plenty of bars, cafes, night clubs and discos that stay open into the early hours of the morning. A night out is extremely good value for money with many bars promoting "happy hour" offers. Typically, you can enjoy a nice 3 course meal for under £10! Whether you’re a skier or a snowboarder, Borovets is the place for you. --- SUMMER ACTIVITIES --- Borovets is an all-year-round resort, and once the snow melts, visitors can indulge themselves in some alternative activities. In summer, the surrounding pine forests make an excellent centre for mountain walking and hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. The ski lifts take you to the very peak of the mountain tops for some of the best views in Europe.

How to get there
Borovets is 45 miles south of Sofia. Sofia is accessible from a range of UK airports. There are regular flights with Bulgaria Air, Wizz Air and British Airways. Transfer by private taxi is inexpensive and can be booked prior to the holiday. Car hire is available from Sofia Airport or on the internet at www.auto-europe.co.uk Transfer only takes 1 hour and Borovets is the nearest ski resort in Bulgaria to get to from the U.K.

There is a king-size bed and a four seater settee which converts to a double bed. Bed linen and towels are provided. Daily maid service(emptying bins and light cleaning) included. Further details outdoors: The 42km of marked pistes are served by a well developed lift network. There is also 19km of cross country trails.The Borovets ski season runs from December through to April with a snow cover of more than 1.5 metres. It has snow guns for producing snow, and some slopes are illuminated for evening skiing. A fun activity for evening is a skidoo ride where you can drive up the forest trails . Borovets has an excellent ski school with over 200 professional ski instructors, speaking English, German, French and Russian. Group and private lessons are available at reasonable rates. Ski packages can be organised prior to your holiday.
