Home description
Chalet Zora was completed in 2006, by a reputable construction company from Sofia. The house is situated within a large walled garden in a street at the top of the hill village of Beli Iskar (alt. 1,200 m), on the edge of a long meadow. It has panoramic views of the mountains and hills, including the dramatic local landmark of Eagle Rock. There is a lawn area for sunbathing or outdoor games and is safe and secure for children. The village borders the Rila Mountain National Park, with its spectacular alpine scenery, deep forests and river gorges, and there is easy access to an endless number of valley and mountain trails. The lively, local administrative town of Samokov is 6 km away on a straight road. The town has two, large, modern supermarkets, selling all the food and household products that you would need. There is an excellent fresh fruit and vegetable market and there is a choice of restaurants in the Samokov and Borovets, banks with cashpoints and a post office.
For winter sports -the international ski resort of Borovets is 20 minutes by car, on a good quality road via Samokov. Borovets has a range of shops, restaurants, recreational facilities, a bank and a 24 hour medical centre.
For summer - Borovets is reached via the hill road (10 minutes) offering riding, swimming pools, gymnasiums, spa facilities and gondola access to Mount Musalla - 2,925 metres (July and August - selected dates). Walking and bicycle rides from the house.

The Sofia/Rila Mountains region
The Rila mountain range boasts the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula (Mt Musala - 2,925 m) and the average height of the peaks are 2,700 m. The mountains are registered in the UN list of representative protected areas and is Bulgaria's largest national park - 81,000 hectares, two thirds of which is forested. The park contains over 100 peaks, with deep and dramatic river gorges, lakes and waterfalls. The national parks authority have marked many trails and built bridges and information boards and there are mountain chalets for hikers to shelter for the night. The snow usually covers the whole area from the end of November until April and still covers the peaks right into the middle of summer. The area is of special interest to botanists, with a large variety of flora, including some rare species.
Borovets / Beli Iskar area
There are wonderful walks and bike trails within a short distance of the house. These include gentle strolls through woods, meadows and river gorges and graduate up to long mountain walks, such as, climbing to the top of Mt Musala, the "Seven Lakes" and Mt Malyovitsa. It is possible to walk to the Rila Monastery, on the southwestern side, but this would require serious planning and an overnight stop in the mountains.
Borovets offers all the expected facilities of a winter and summer holiday centre. As well as good skiing, it provides a good base for hiking, mountain biking and riding in the summer, where horses and equipment can be rented. The Yastrebets Gondola and a chairlift operate at the weekends and some weekdays and give quick access to the top ski stations, below Mt Musala. Bikes can be hooked onto the chair lift.
Rila and Samokov hotels, Borovets, have large indoor swimming pools and gyms, for which you can pay a small charge to use.
Rila monastery - a UNESCO World Heritage site - is an easy two hour drive. It is the most important religious building in the country and is set in a deep, wooded gorge, with jagged mountain peaks towering above - thoroughly recommended.
There are many interesting excursions to the Rhodope and Stara Planina mountains, and museum villages - Koprivshitsa (2.5 hour drive) being the best.
The house has a good stock of guide books and maps to give you the most enjoyment for your holiday.

A note to say how much we enjoyed our holiday at your beautiful and extremely well equipped chalet. The children enjoyed building a snowman in the garden and playing with the sledge.

The house was fantastic! - Thank you! The information pack was very handy. You have gone to a lot of trouble to make it the perfect holiday home. We were totally spoilt. I dont think I shall go anywhere again without a sauna. We shall not hesitate to recommend your house to others.
