La Maison Bariole
About the home
Located in the famous medieval street of Rue Carnot, with its array of shops and restaurants, and set on four levels, La Maison Bariolé offers three spacious double bedrooms and one single bedroom. The house has spectacular views over both the old village and the Mediterranean.
On one side you have fascinating views of the village itself, leafy and full of character and typically French, and on the other side the most breathtaking panorama imaginable of the old village and its terracotta rooftops, the sparkling Mediterranean and, in the distance, the Iles de Hyeres, reached by boat from Le Lavandou.
The new kitchen and dining room is on the top floor so that full advantage can be taken of these views, but even one floor below there are still spectacular views from the balcony of one of the double bedrooms. A great place to sit and reflect while the sun sets or to have breakfast in the mornings.
It offers everything you need for a perfect holiday, including spectacular village and sea views, well furnished and well appointed rooms, a brand new contemporary fully-equipped kitchen, three double bedrooms, one single room and a south facing balcony.
If you want to experience real French life in one of France’s most beautiful villages, you should enjoy La Maison Bariolé! Please be aware, however, that the village is built on the mountain side and has steep winding streets and La Maison Bariolé, like all the houses on Bormes, has steep flights of stairs. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for the physically frail.

Further details indoors:
3rd floor
Starting at the top of the house, on the third floor, there is a kitchen/dining room with two large windows with spectacular roof top and sea views. The kitchen is new and fully fitted, incorporating an island with a ceramic hob and extractor unit. All surfaces are ceramic tiled and there is an integrated fridge and freezer as well as a large upright fridge and freezer. There is a new oven, a microwave and an integrated washing machine. The kitchen is very well stocked with saucepans, cutlery, plates and glasses. A large glass table and leather dining chairs are located to the left of the kitchen. The great view and welcome breeze makes the walk up three flights of stairs well worthwhile!
Also on the third floor is a large double bedroom. This room overlooks the ancient clocktower with a chiming clock which is much loved by Bormians for its age and attendant eccentricity. The room incorporates a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, main light and side light. All rooms have shutters.
2nd floor
Overlooking the ancient village's terracotta rooftops and the sea beyond and incorporating a long but narrow south-facing balcony, there is another large double bedroom. (If you bring children we ask you to keep them under supervision when on the balcony) It has a stylish blue faux suede double bed, a wardrobe and central and side lights, a side table and balcony furniture. There are tremendous views from this level, too, over the village, surrounding countryside and vineyards to the sea and the Illes de Hyeres.
On this floor there is a separate toilet and a large family bathroom incorporating another toilet, a bath, shower, twin washbasins (very much in the French style!) and twin mirrors.
1st floor
The large 'bourgeois-style' sitting room is on this floor. With a white marble fireplace and resplendent with a large crystal chandelier, this room is stylish, cool and relaxing. There are two contemporary sofas, a satellite TV (remember to bring your own Sky card as it is an English system), a large glass coffee table and CD player.
Situated next to the sitting room is the single room. With huge windows, this room overlooks the village street. It has a large wardrobe with integrated shelving and a table and chair.
Ground floor
To the right of the front door is another large double bedroom. Full of character, this room has exposed beams and a decorative hand-painted basin. It has a new decorative cream double bed, a wardrobe, chest of drawers and a side table and light. All rooms have shutters and some also have curtains. They have electric heaters so are suitable for both summer and winter. The main rooms also have fans for the height of the season. The whole house has ancient terracotta flooring except for the ground floor bedroom which has ceramic flooring. The stairs are also terracotta, flanked with wood in the typical provençal style, and even though there is a handrail throughout, it is highly recommended that only those who are firm of foot and perfectly mobile should consider a holiday in Maison Bariolé or, indeed, in Bormes itself, as the village is renowned for its steep winding streets.
Like many old French towns, the buildings are very close together. We would be most grateful if you would respect the privacy and comfort of our neighbours . The building is not suitable for pets and we request that our guests do not smoke.

Parking:
The house is in a pedestrianised street but there is easy parking at the end of the road. Although there is a multi-story for use by tourists at the other end of the village, the locals all use the back road and park easily at the end of Rue Carnot.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region
Bormes-les-Mimosas is perfectly situated and rich with places to explore. There is an interesting walk to the castle at the back of the village and the Bormes forest. The beach is also spectacular. Reputed to be one of the best along the whole stretch of the Côte d’Azur, it is overlooked by the Bregançon Fortress, where the French presidents have their holiday retreat.
Within easy reach is the stunning hillside village of Hyeres (20 minutes drive) with all its Moroccan influences, and the thriving port of Toulon (30 minutes drive) with its Saturday market and sophisticated boutiques. The Porte de Bormes offers opportunities for the sailing enthusiast as well as interesting restaurants situated around the marina as does the pretty town of Le Lavandou, also famous for its scores of restaurants, huge sandy beaches and its famous firework displays throughout the summer (check with the tourist office in Bormes for exact dates).
The Bormes les Mimosas / Vieux Village area
Known as the village of flowers and particularly famous for its mimosas festival, the spectacular historical hillside village of Bormes les Mimosas wafts with the smell of fragrant flowers and the delicious food offered by its array of excellent restaurants. The steeply winding cobbled streets have a fascinating array of art galleries, sculpture studios, ceramics, pottery and jewellery shops, a hand-made millinery shop, a leather shop, a designer fashion boutique and sundry other shops selling soaps and fragrances of the region and other local specialities.
Every Wednesday Bormes hosts a lively and bustling market which is not just a tourist attraction as, apart from the traditional Provençal gifts, there are numerous fruit and vegetable stalls, a butcher and some of the best takeaway paella we have had in the whole area.
Every night the village’s square is the place to be seen and a very special place to have cocktails before dinner. On May 15, 2010, The Telegraph particularly mentioned aperitif time in the village of Bormes les Mimosas. The village is renowned for its variety of bars and restaurants and it has a sophisticated elegance so if you enjoy dressing up in the evenings, you won’t feel out of place. It is, in fact, against the law in Bormes for men to be outside without a shirt, whatever the temperature!
And all this is just a few minutes stroll from La Maison Bariolé.
