Home description
Borgo St. Basilio, in Marina di Pisticci Basilicata lies in a magnificent position, close to the Ionian coast, only 100 kms from the airport of Bari or Brindisi, with the nearest towns being Taranto and Matera. It is the ideal destination if you are looking for a relaxing vacation where you can enjoy tranquillity, breathtaking sceneries and the cultural heritage of the area. The village is a residential area with swimming pool, porch, tennis court supermarkets, ice cream parlour, restaurants , bar solarium. In the proximities you can go horse riding, have sailing lessons, play golf or go on excursions to Pisticci, Craco, Matera, the Magna Grecia towns with archaeological sites and museums.Pisticci is a picturesque coastal village beloning to the province of Matera. It has 17.828 inhabitants and is situated 364 metres over the sealevel. This is a village with a long history situated in the heart of Magna Graecia. The village boosted during the Norman period. In 1688 the area surrounding the castle was destroyed by a landslide which caused more than 400 deaths - many inhabitants build small houses near the ravin - which can still be seen. The village has a lot of ancient churches. In the Torrevecchia area, you can find the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, built in 1542 on the ruins of an even more ancient church. Around the church, the remains of the ancient cylindrical Bruni tower are still visible. Also well worth a visit is the Church of Santa Maria del Casale or Church of Saint Anthony, which has 17th- and 18th-century frescoes and a whole number of paintings. Just outside the town, in the San Basilio area, there is an imposing fortified construction, originally built by Ruggero the Norman as a castle, before being transformed in 1133 into an abbey by a group of Basilian monks.
Within 100 kms you find the Lucanian Dolomites, the Pollino Park, the Vulture, well-known for the good wine. Puglia with places like Alberobello, Castellana Grotte, Ostuni are 120 kms away or Campania with Amalfi, Sorrento, Ravello, Positano are about 200 kms .

The Southern Italy / Basilicata region
The Basilicata is for sure one of the less known regions in the South of Italy and yet it is among the most interesting regions to visit. It is divided into 2 Provinces, mostly mountainous, with two short coastlines on the Ionian and the Thyrrenian Sea. The Ionian coast and the Tyrrhenian are quite different; each with its own clearly marked individual character. The Ionian littoral is characterized by a wide sandy shore, stretching from the Apulian to the Calabrian borders and studded with small seaside resorts, like Lido di Metaponto, (with its archeological remains), Marina di Pisticci, Lido di Scanzano, Lido di Policoro; the latter, short but equally important, is a jagged rocky coastline behind which luxuriant mediterranean vegetation flourishes where Maratea, with its charming outlying hamlets, is one of the most beautiful resorts of the south Tyrrhenian Sea. The mountain scenery is arid and craggy Francesco (12th century) decorated with excellent frescoes; Tricarico, of medieval appearance; Pisticci, with its characteristic rows of white houses; Tursi, in a panoramic position over the Sinni River valley, and the nearby solitary church of S. Maria d'Anglona. Least but not last Matera itself with its “Sassi”, a piece of history not to miss! In the Province of Potenza, a visit must be paid to Rivello, dominating the Noce River valley; Castel Lagopesole, at the foot of the imposing mansion built by Frederick II; Rapolla, with S. Lucia Church of Norman origin; Melfi, an interesting little town dominated by the Norman castle; Venosa, with the famous Abbey of the Trinità; Acerenza with its thirteenth-century cathedral. Of great interest, are the archaeological remains of Eraclea and Metaponto, on the Ionian coast, of Grumentum, on the shores of the Pietra del Pertusillo artificial lake and the ruins of the acropolis at Mount La Croccia (4th century BC.) near Oliveto Lucano., but fascinating as are the `Lucanian Dolomites', or wooded and wild, as in the Pollino area, with a wealth of natural attractions, or complete with a number of lovely little lakes. In the Province of Matera, places worth seeing are Montescaglioso, with its imposing medieval Abbey of S. Angelo; Miglionico, dominated by a Castle of Norman origin; Irsina, with the fine crypt of the Monastery of S.
