The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Lacanau is a commune in the Gironde department in Aquitaine in southwestern France. Lacanau is a surfing area.

Lacanau is a member of the Community of Municipalities Médoc's Lakes which includes the municipalities of Lacanau, Carcans and Hourtin : the territory Médoc Océan : http://www.medococean.co.uk/

Lacanau is above all famous for its beach, sun, surf, golf and nature.

he town consists of several locations: Lacanau Ville located 10km inland, le Moutchic/ Carreyre/ la grande Escoure/ Talaris around the lake and Lacanau Océan at the beach front. Lacanau Ville is the original part of the town, that's where all main infrastructures are located.

Lacanau's touristic history began in 1903, when Pierre Ortal created the beach resort of Lacanau Océan. Later, the settlements around the lake were constructed. Most of the tourist activities are concentrated at the ocean and at the lake. In Lacanau Ocean you'll find most of the shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Lacanau is famous for its “villas anciennes” and their “architecture balnéaire”. These historic villas were constructed about a hundred years ago and are very typical of beach resorts created back then. It is always worth going for a walk to discover these witnesses of the glory origins of this resort.

Lacanau is above all reputed as a surfing destination. Every august the resort welcomes the top international professional surfers for the Lacanau Pro Competition. There are numerous events about water sports all year around: art expeditions, smaller surf competitions, the Lacanau Gliss festival at the beginning of june, …

Lacanau is also a golfer's paradise (3 golf courses), for nature lovers (thanks to the calm lake and the nature reserve “Etang de Cousseau”) and not to forget, it's a heaven for those who love spa treatments.

From Lacanau there are more than 150km of cycling tracks and many hiking tracks linking the Médoc Océan area.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux

Only 50 kilometers from Médoc Océan you will find the world famous wine capital of Bordeaux. The inner part of the city has recently been declared UNESCO world heritage site and is well worth visiting. The city has many cultural activities on offer as well as Europe's longest connected shopping mile! A trip to Bordeaux is highly recommended!

Médoc

Within a stone's throw of Médoc Océan you will find the world famous wineries of the Médoc area, also called Châteaux. They can be visited and they offer wine tastings as well, a perfect opportunity to discover the local culture and heritage.
