The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
The nearest large town is Blaye (15 kms away) which is situated on the Gironde estuary. It has a famous citadel, hypermarket, numerous restaurants and a daily car ferry to the Médoc. In the heart of one of France's main wine producing regions there are literally hundreds of local châteaux, the nearest being 1km away.
Bordeaux is easily accessible by car or train (nearest railway station 11kms) and it is well worth a visit. It has something for everyone, from designer shops to historic buildings, parks and restaurants. There is a new riverside walkway which takes you along the rejuvenated banks of the Garonne, which is traffic free and safe for kids. The efficient new tram system whisks you from the excellent value 'park and ride' just off the motorway right to the centre of the action.
The Atlantic beaches include the 'surfer's paradise' at Carcans and Lacanau in the Medoc or the seafood and dunes of Arcachon, to the west of Bordeaux. To the north are the sandy beaches of St-Georges-de-Didonne and Royan (the capital of the Cote de Beauté), a little town with a busy, working harbour and marina.
Bordeaux International airport is only a 45 minutes drive away and the Atlantic beaches are one hour away.
The historic town of Blaye is a 15 minute drive from Saugon.
Blaye is famous for two things - it's citadel which overlooks the Gironde and it's wine, the "Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux"- red, white and rosé wines of Bordeaux from the right bank of the estuary.
Blaye already had an economic and an important strategic position in the gallo-Roman time but it was during the reign of Louis XIV, with the construction in 1689 of the citadel by military engineer Vauban, that it became what it is today. The citadel of Blaye, its city walls, the Fort Paté and the Fort Médoc were listed in 2008 as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as part of the "Fortifications Of Vauban" group.
The citadel of Blaye has a spectacular view over the Gironde estuary. You can get a feel of the town by strolling through the streets and you will get a full appreciation of its position, overlooking the Gironde, by walking around the walls. An orientation table is located on the top of the keep. There is a wide panoramic view of the estuary overlooking the sea, the eastern part of the citadel and the Porte Royale.
Town of Blaye hosts a wonderful market every Saturday and Wednesday, the biggest in the area.
There is also a car ferry (BAC) from the town to the other side of the Gironde Estuary, home to the famous Medoc wines and great surfing.

"Les Lauriers- an amazing place for a family holiday."
Les Lauriers is situated just outside the village of Saugon, in the Gironde. We travelled down from Calais with our party of 8, aged between 9yrs and 44yrs. The directions that Karen & Giles Phillips had provided us with meant that we found the Gite easily. We received a lovely, warm welcome (even though we arrived slightly earlier than we had anticipated!!) Karen gave us a lovely welcome and showed us around her beautiful property then left us to settle in, there was a very informative folder on the kitchen table which included details on anything we needed to know, from instructions on the appliances to information about shops in the surrounding areas etc.
All the pictures/information we had seen prior to our arrival still didn't prepare us for how beautiful, spacious, peaceful and family-friendly Les Lauriers is, the Gite is equipped with everything you need, from a well equipped kitchen to books and games for all the family to use. There is a big kitchen table for everyone to sit around but also a big table in the garden, where we ate most of our meals as a family. Although there is an adjoining Gite that also sleeps up to 8, and it was occupied during our stay we still had complete privacy and barely heard any noise.
The swimming pool is a great size with numerous chairs/sun beds provided to use, it is fenced and gated safely and there is a pool alarm available if you have very small children in your party, it is situated close to the Gite but has been sited in such a way that if the occupants of the other Gite are using the pool it still doesn't encroach on your privacy.
There is plenty to do in the surrounding areas and Karen is always onhand for advice and ideas of places to visit, we visited Blaye, the swimming lake (5mins drive away), La Palmyre Zoo and Bordeaux (which has an amazing Park & RIde that cost 3.50euros for 4 of us, details are in the visitor information folder), but, the weather was so lovely, beautiful sunshine and temperatures of approx 25-32 degrees everyday that we were quite happy to spend days at the Gite, using the garden and pool.
Everybody in our family party throughly enjoyed our week at Les Lauriers, and we all want to go back next year for 2 weeks hopefully!!
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend a family holiday at Les Lauriers.
Well done Karen and Giles, you have created an amazing place for a holiday.
