The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region

The city of Bordeaux - UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A 15 minute drive to the Bordeaux tram terminus. Take a relaxing journey into the centre of Bordeaux.

Bordeaux is a candidate for the European City of Culture 2013.

Well over 2000 years old the town has a wealth of architectural gems: cathedrals, museums, 18th century houses and riverside quays. You can enjoy a stroll along the lovely avenues & quaint, narrow streets. Marvel at the glorious churches or cruise the Garonne River.

Attractions include the Grand Theatre, the Place de la Bourse and the stunning Eglise Notre Dame. Bordeaux also boasts nine public museums.

Rue Ste-Catherine
This entirely pedestrianised street is over a kilometre long and offers some of the best shopping in Bordeaux. It is one of the oldest streets in town, dating back to the Roman period.
Grand Theatre
This is the city’s cultural icon, built between 1773 and 1780 as a testament to the growing prosperity of Bordeaux’s emerging bourgeoisie. This glorious building is one of the last remaining 18th century theatres in the world. The theatre is still used as an opera house and performance hall.
Cathedral of St Andre
The largest church in Bordeaux. It contains some impressive 13th century sculptures and a 47 metre belfry tower, built in the 15th century.

Bordeaux Wine Region
Bordeaux is the red wine capital of the world. It is truly a wine lover's Mecca, boasting over fifty appellations and nearly 10,000 chateaux. Discover first-hand the sophistication and exquisite appeal of the world's finest wines: Lafite, Mouton, Latour, Pomerol, St Emilion Graves, Fronsac and many others.

At the end of the garden are the vineyards of chateau Baillargeau, an extremely good quality Bordeaux wine. There is a Cave Cooperative in the next village where you can taste and buy many local wines.

St Emilion is a 30 minutes drive. This medieval town stands proudly at the top of a hill overlooking the Dordogne valley.

It is an incredible open-air museum. The most surprising remains are with no doubt its underground monuments: galleries covering more than 70 ha. (about 150 acres) and the breathtaking monolithic church, dug out of solid limestone.

The Medoc is about 45 minutes. There you can follow the wine trail around vineyards of Margaux, Rothschild, St Julien, Lynch Barges, Pichon Longueville…

The Atlantic coast - one hour.
Arcachon
A lively seaside town on the bay of Arcachon with many restaurants, shops, a Casino, a fisherman's and sailing port that can harbour almost 2500 boats, and the choice of a large variety of sports and cultural pastimes.

Lacanau
Situated in the heart of the Médoc peninsula, Lacanau is both an immense beach (more than 14 km) on the Atlantic coast and a vast 2000 ha lake.

Dune of Pyla
The highest dune in Europe. This dune reaches a height of 107m. At this summit, the view is spectacular with the ocean coast, the inlet of the Bay, the large pine forest and, when the sky is very clear, the Pyrenees.

Le Porge
More than 13 kilometres of long, golden, beautiful and wild beaches. Eat al fresco in small village of restaurants between the dunes and the pine forest.

Guestbook

“What is French for Shangri-La, because we’ve found it”

Excellent, tremendous, fabulous and all other adjectives. Great place for adults to chill and kids to run riot! Fab garden, Love it. Wish we had as big back home for donkeys et al!

The gardens are really lovely and the atmosphere of the gite is great..

Les Rossignols is an excellent family retreat with jacuzzi, heated swimming pool, games room, attractive large grounds and friendly animals, so there is plenty to do whatever the weather!

Beste Lesley en David. Dank voor jullie gastvrijheid in jullie prachtige Gite. Wij en de kinderen hebben het erg naar ons zin gehad. Veel te doen rond het huis en daarbuiten veel te zien en te beleven. Vooral Bordeaux was geweldig. Jullie waren onzichtbaar aanwezig en beschikbaar met raad en daad.
