The Aquitaine region
Bordeaux is one of the most interesting places in France. It is also one of the most elegant cities in the country. You hear the name Bordeaux, you will automatically imagine a vineyard as this is the wine capital of the world. It is home to the famous wine growers and wine chateaux. Travel to Bordeaux will not be complete without including wine tastings in the itinerary. This city is a paradise on earth for wine enthusiasts.
Located along the Garonne River in the southwest province of Aquitaine, it has an estimated 45 minutes distance from the Atlantic coast. Bordeaux is a classical city teeming with magnificent architecture, rich cultural accoutrements and an exemplary ambience of elegance and class. The city’s skyline transforms into a stunning view of brightly-lit buildings along the Garonne River.
Bordeaux, a city in Aquitaine in the west of France is known for its exquisite wines and is now becoming a favourite tourist destination because of its impressive Gothic cathedrals and 18th century architectural landmarks.
A must-see place for travellers to Europe, Bordeaux has but beauty and splendour to offer. One of the most quaint districts in the city is Quartier Saint-Eloi where you can see the Grosse Cloche (Great Bell) which used to be the bell of the Town Hall’s belfry.
The Porte de Bourgogne is found at end of Victor Hugo Avenue. This is where the city’s gates used to stand. Fronting the Porte de Bourgogne is La Garonne River and the famous Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge) which was commissioned by Napoleon in 1822. The Stone Bridge is almost 500 meters long and is one of the most beautiful bridges in the whole of France.
The Saint Michel Church is one of the famous landmarks of Bordeaux. Its 114 meters steeple is the second tallest in France. This church suffered the brunt of lightning twice and a hurricane at the end of the XVII century damaged its structure. Repair was only done in 1865. This is also named World Heritage Site by UNESCO along with two other monuments in the same city of Bordeaux.
The biggest church in Bordeaux is Saint Andre Cathedral. The origins of this church date back from the XI century. This is where the future king of France, Louis VII married Eleanor of Aquitaine in the XII century. Nothing of the original church can be seen today though.
The Tour Pey Berland is a 50 meter high tower seen from the back view of Saint Andre Cathedral. The top of this tower gives a panoramic excellent view of the city.
Bordeaux is also home to many museums. One of the best museums they have is the Museum of Fine Arts which is found a few yards from the Saint Andre Cathedral. Its vast collection of art works dating back from the 17th century to the 20th century. Another must-see is the Museum of Modern Art which houses the city’s collection of contemporary art.
There are other interesting museums in Bordeaux like the Museum of Decorative Arts – housing their collection of classic furniture and decorative objects; Museum of Natural History – which exhibits animal and fossil specimens and collections; the Center Jean Moulin – which is dedicated to the World War II Resistance and Free France Movement; the Musee d’Aquitaine – a history museum that captures the country’s history from prehistory to current time.
Bordeaux is a very beautiful city with its streets hiding many marvels. Another reason why people flock to this city is its wine, Bordeaux being the largest fine winemaking regions in the world. Most wine enthusiasts will not pass up the chance to visit the vineyards in Bordeaux.
Another landmark in the city is the Grand Theater – a neoclassical theatre designed by Victor Louis at the end of the 18th century. This has been the center of the artistic life in Bordeaux. The beautiful theater’s portico is decorated with twelve Corinthian-style columns. Close to the theatre is this spectacular 18th century architectural structure called Maison du Vin – House of Wine. This building plays host to Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin, an organization of the region’s winegrowers.
