Aware of the natural riches she actively helps to upkeep, the town of le Teich also offers the visitors numerous ways of discovering the flora and wildlife of her exceptional sites. A favourable environment and the presence of a world-famous ornithological park have contributed to making Le Teich to an incomparable site of observation. Here everything just seems to converge towards the well-being of the birds. Humid marshes, salty meadows, old fishponds, sweet water from the river Leyre, and salt water from the Bay of Arcachon make up the perfect mix in an environment that men, fortunately, tries very hard to preserve.
Open to the public since 1972, the ornithological park of the town of le Teich today has a well-earned international reputation. Located on one of the most important routes of migratory birds of Europe, it shelters almost 300 species of birds that thrive in this well preserved natural environment. There are two roads in the park. The longest one (about 3 miles return), will show you the complete park with its 13 strategically placed observation posts. For the less daring, there is a shorter road of about 2 kilometres where you can still observe the birds. The park is open throughout the year, and there is an entrance fee.
Preferential rates on the Teich Bird reserve. (You must buy your tickets at the reception of the residence).
Situated next to the ornithological park the pretty little harbour of Le Teich shelters forty or fifty yachts. To get back to the salt water of the Basin of Arcachon, the yachtsmen have to follow the sweet water of the river Leyre for almost two kilometres.
The coastal footpath which is especially interesting for bird-watching , runs through the dyked up parts of the Leyre-delta. From the marina it skirts the famous park and leads through the ancient fishponds, much appreciated by the birds, and the entrance channel to the harbour. After some kilometres it turns left and gives the walker a spectacular view of the Basin of Arcachon.
This nice roundtrip can be combined with the tour of the banks of the river Leyre (about 10 km return, from the bridge of Lamothe and the natural stopping-place of the Basin of Arcachon), or done on its own (about 5 km return starting from the Rue du Pont neuf which is situated near the swimming-basin). The main interest of this tour lies in the exploring of a part of the landscapes that make up the Leyre-delta, and the extraordinary diversity of floral life in this area. Often very wide, the path goes round vast meadows, winds through the heart of basins where you will see ducks, swans, and other birds, until it finally borders one of the arms of the river Leyre. In certain places however the path seems to close itself on the walker, who has to inch his way through the bushes to continue his way.
All the area is part of the "regional nature reserve of the Landes de Gascogne" This vast - 262,000 hectares - and magnificent nature reserve which stretches most of the way to the south-east of the Basin of Arcachon today groups 34 towns, one of which is the town of Le Teich.
The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region
Situated at less than 3km from La Rochelle, the ile de Re island benefits from a very high rate of sunshine hours, equal to the Côte d'Azur. The ile de Re Island is composed of ten villages, which respect the typical architectural tradition with over 70 kilometres of coast. Truly, it is the paradise on earth. Even the houses and the streets respect beautiful uniformity: White washed walls, green or blue shutters and hollyhocks… they really make this island a unique place. Finally, especially created, at the limit of the continent and at the border of the ocean, the ile de Re Island offers 87 km of cycling paths which permit many visitors to discover the villages, the hamlets, the beaches, the forests, the marshes.
The Médoc peninsula, with immense beaches on the Atlantic coast, fine, golden sand offered to the beach fans, charming seaside resorts, lakes and pine forest. The South Western French coast is privileged in its geographical situation and a recognised microclimate with more than 2300 hours of sun per year. Here, nature and sports are in dissociable. Everything is planned for a bracing and invigorating stay, such as walking on foot, on horseback, or riding a bike on the significant cycle tracks network and some excellent golf courses. This is also a paradise for surfers who come from all over the world to test their sporting skills. Bordeaux, is the regional capital of Aquitaine, and the most renowned vineyards such as Médoc, St Émilion, Graves and Sauternes are all nearby.

Other activities in the Perigord include water sports, canoeing, tennis, horse-riding, horse-driven carriage, rides, walks and mountain-biking, lake and river fishing and golf..The region is dotted with small towns and villages, all typically French in character. The whole region is dotted with chateaux or you can just relax and spend the day swimming in the many lakes and rivers, cycling through the quiet lanes or walking the marked footpaths.
The Bordeaux / Gujan Mestras area
Le Teich is a small fishing village on the Bay of Arcachon in the department of Gironde in the Aquitaine region of Southwest France. The Arcachon Basin, with a lagoon of 250 square km, is a region of diverse and natural beauty. The centre, l?Ile aux Oiseaux, is surrounded by picturesque fishermen?s cabins on stilts (« cabanes tchanquées ») and is a must for bird lovers. Further away, you will find the remarkable vast expanse of the Pyla Dune (2700 m long - 105 m high). The land of oyster farmers, the Arcachon Basin has maintained its identity and the beauty of its picturesque villages. With its grand villas and rolling sand dunes, Arcachon is an elegant Atlantic resort, very popular with the "Bordelais" (residents of nearby Bordeaux)weekenders. The area attracts people coming from all over the world, all year round, who come to discover the peaceful haven of the Ornithological Park, where about 300 species of birds can be found. Here everything just seems to converge towards the well-being of the birds.
