The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Vaucluse region

Bonnieux is considered as one of the most beautiful perched villages of the Luberon area. The region was made popular by Peter Mayle’s bestseller “A year in Provence”
The villlage is built on the foothills of the Petit Luberon, and is surrounded by a number of other perched villages (Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes, Lacoste, Saignon), all of them within a short drive away.
In Lacoste (5 km), you can visit the Marquis de Sade's castle, restored by the famous French fashion designer Pierre Cardin.
In Roussillon (10km), you can see the ochre deposit and visit the house of the Irish playwright Samuel Beckett
In Lourmarin (25km): Summer theatre and music festival. You can visit the Castle, and the house of the French writer Albert Camus.
In L'isle-sur-la-Sorgue (20km), there is a permanent famous antique and flea market
During the summer there are many shows and festivals in other nearby villages, as well as important musical festivals in Aix-en-Provence (opera), Orange (lyrical performances), La Roque d'Anthéron (International piano festival).
In Avignon (40 km), you can visit the Palace of the Popes. In July, there is the annual International theater festival )
The Bonnieux area
Our house, 5 km distant from Bonnieux, is located near the famous Pont Julien (27 BC).
500m far from the house is an access to a 100 km bike piste (running from Cavaillon to Forcalquier). Bicycle hire available in Bonnieux.
From our house you can have a nice walk to a nearby little restaurant (opened at lunchtime) located in the old disused railway station (1km)
In the village of Bonnieux, with it’s beautiful old houses and winding streets, you will find grocers, butchers, doctors, a chemist’s as well as good restaurants, cafés, art and antique shops. There is also a Friday local market
In Coustellet (8km), local market on Sundays
Apt (8km) is the closest town with a big market (Saturdays), many shops and supermarkets.
The area is ideal for walking and cycling, either through the Luberon south valley countryside around our house, planted with orchards and vineyards, or, above Bonnieux, on the many hiking paths of the Luberon mountains where you will enjoy spectacular views.
You can also drive north through the Ventoux area, to visit the waterfalls of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and to drive up the top of the Ventoux where the view is truly magnificent
