The Isle of Wight region

The Isle of Wight has long been known as The Garden Isle and it is noted for its warm climate, stunning scenery and friendly welcome. The Isle of Wight became popular in the Victorian Era, when Queen Victoria made Osborne House her home.
The Isle of Wight has miles of sandy beaches and the main resorts are Shanklin , Sandown, Ventnor, Ryde, Seaview and Bembridge. Ferries to the Isle of Wight for cars come, from Portsmouth to Fishbourne, Yarmouth to Lymington and Southampton to East Cowes, whilst foot passengers can use the fast ferry crossings from Southampton to Cowes and Portsmouth to Ryde. The Hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde is the quickest way to cross the Solent.
The Bonchurch area
Bonchurch is a small village on the Isle of Wight. Its earliest recorded history is in the Domesday Book, where it is referred to as 'Bonecerce'. 'Cerce' is the Anglo-Saxon for church while 'Bone' is derived from the Saxon patron saint, St. Boniface.
The village of Bonchurch nestles between Shanklin and Ventnor and is truly worth a visit to appreciate the quaint cottages, large imposing Victorian Mansions and the village pond. Its namesake St Boniface Church Buit in 1070 and is found on route to the beach.
Built on the side of St.Boniface down, leading down to the sea, Bonchurch will remind you of the sort of holiday of yester year. The seafront has a safe shingle and sand beach, surrounded by rocks, which the kids will love to climb over, hunting for crabs and small fish. For the parents, there are several cafes, which look out to sea and serve a variety of local seafood specialities. From the shore you can take the level walk along the revetment towards Ventnor. Here you will pass tiny fisherman's cottages, Wheelers Bay and end up at Ventnor harbour.
Another feature of the village is the pond. This large pond is stocked with huge carp, which rise from the deep when visitors throw them bread. There are also ducks and beautifully trees and shrubs and its pleasant to while away an hour just taking in the scenery.
Bonchurch was constructed predominantly through the late Georgian early Victorian years for the wealthy gentry, who holidayed in the area, taking in the notably milder climate, which is protected by the stunning backdrop of St. Boniface Down, the Island's highest point. To the west there is a superb walk through “The Landslip”, a coastal woodland, perched on top of the cliffs, which has been modelled by Landslips and erosion. Sheltered by ancient oaks, this walk is a must, you can walk through the deep stone gorge called the Devil's Chimney and then once at the top reward yourself with a cream tea.
A visit to Bonchurch is a must for people who appreciate the quiet life. The views, seafront and atmosphere.
The Bonchurch Inn (within 1-minute walk):
Cost – low to medium range.
A delightful pub (one of the reasons we own St Michaels Cliff).
Noted in the AA good pub food guide and serves excellent Italian food in a courtyard pub with various outside and indoor areas. Children are welcome.
Mention to Adrian where you’re staying for an extra-friendly service.
The Pond Cafe, Bonchurch, serving high quality menu, located adjacent to the Pond
The Crown Inn -Shorwell
Red Lion:
Freshwater - Yarmonth
Well worth a drive along the South Coast with its inspirational views and wild unspoilt beaches.
The Red Lion is in Church Place, which is a little tucked away so you may need to ask for directions.
From the pub turn left along the lane, down to the bridge, crossing the river yard and onto the causeway track. This runs along the river all the way to Yarmonth.
There are literally hundreds of pubs and walks on the Island. Check the Pub-Walks Guide at the Ferry. These are some of our favourite ones but we have not been to many, so please explore and let us know you think.
To the beach:
From the front drive turn left and follow the road round and start going down hill. You can either follow the main road or cut through the picturesque churchyard. If you choose to do this route enter through a little gate on the right-hand side and continue going down hill until you reach the church. Then go out of the main gates and you will then see the sign for the 11c church across the road. Cross the road and continue downwards, which will take you on to a nature trail and past the oldest church on the Island, where it all began. Keep going downwards until you pass a small fresh waterfall, and if you keep going for a further minute, you will have reached the beach.
To Ventnor:
Either from the beach along a promenade or through Bonchurch Village.

This holiday home was superb in every way. Huge family sitting room for chilling. Great kitchen facilities and huge dining table for the foodies. The front garden was my favourite spot sitting under the grapevine. Stylish decor Loved Bonchurch and Ventnor for mooching around. Book a table at Steephill Cove for a real seafood treat. We had sunshine too! I CAN'T RECOMMEND ENOUGH!! |

A really lovely, comfortable house. Plenty of space for kids and adults and works well for families sharing. Bonchurch is a beautiful, quiet little village - really picturesque. A lovely 15 minute seaside walk to Ventnor. Definitely going back! |
