The Isle of Wight region

Nestling between Shanklin and Ventnor, the pretty village of Bonchurch , like Ventnor, was constructed predominantly through the Victorian years for the wealthy gentry, who holidayed in the area, taking in the notably milder climate. The seafront at Ventnor has a shingle and sand beach, surrounded by rocks and there are several cafes serving a variety of local seafood specialities. From the shore at Ventnor you can take the level walk along the revetment to Monks Bay at Bonchurch passing tiny fisherman's cottages and Wheelers Bay. A feature of Bonchurch Village is the pretty pond, stocked with huge carp and ducks. The village was a favourite haunt of Charles Dickens who wrote a large part of his classic novel 'David Copperfield' on one of his many stays. The famous 'Devil's Chimney' which leads down to Monks Bay is accessible from the Smugglers Haven Tea Rooms which are only 200 metres from the cottage.

Bonchurch

Famous for its superb beaches, dramatic coastlines and outstanding natural beauty, the Isle of Wight is a holiday haven with something for everyone. From secluded coves and wide expanses of sandy beaches it's not just the stunning landscapes that attract visitors to the Island, but the variety of things to see and do. The Island became popular in the Victorian Era when Queen Victoria made Osborne House her home and, although just five miles from the mainland, it seems like another world. More than half of the Island is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a network of footpaths stretching over 500 miles. Walking, cycling and riding are all on offer as well as water sports, fishing and fossil hunting. Alternatively, there are numerous attractions including historic houses, art galleries, animal sanctuaries and beautiful gardens.
