The Lazio region
Northern Lazio, characterized by lush vegetation, rolling hills and lakes, small hamlets and wonderful medieval towns. The area is full of historic sites to visit from Etruscans tombs to Roman amphitheatres, from medieval castles to renaissance churches. It is also conveniently placed for trips into Tuscany and Umbria and of course Florence and Rome.
Grotte di Castro stands on hill at the north-west end of Lake Bolsena. It was built on an early Etruscan settlement that was destroyed by the Romans around the 3rd century b.c. The Etruscan tombs are being restored and can be to some extent visited. The present town dates back to the middle ages.
There is plenty to do in the area, attractions include the lake with its sandy beaches and the thermal spas of Viterbo. Then of course, there is the many historic towns and villages to visit including, Bolsena, Montefiascone, Viterbo, Bagnoregio, Sutri and Orvieto to name just a view. The nearest sea beach can be found at Pescia Romana, about an hour's drive and there is also an 9-hole golf course at Acquapendente, just under 15 minutes drive away.
It is in a strategic position, being on the borders of Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria, for visiting historical and cultural sites since within one hour of the area you can reach an impressive range of hilltop towns, Etruscan ruins areas of great natural beauty.
In the nearby Monte Rufeno Wildlife Reserve there are paths for trekking and horse-back riding.
The thermal baths of Viterbo, San Casciano dei Bagni, Bagni San Filippo, Bagno Vignoni and Saturnia can be reached easily, the nearest in about 20 minutes, the furthers about one and a half hours.
