WHY BOLOGNA?
Bologna represents (even for Italians) a superb example of the best of the dolce vita. History, architecture, culture, sophistication and the best of Italian cuisine…do you need any other reasons?
We would suggest that you avoid pubs and other mock-Anglo/Irish-establishments, opt instead for an osteria or one of the many cocktail bars, and start your holiday by following one of the more important Bolognese traditions the aperitivo! We feel sure you'll enjoy your stay in Bologna and return again to live the dolce vita.
Bologna's fame is closely linked to the reputation and prestige of the Alma Mater Studiorum (the university), founded in 1088. Renowned throughout Europe, the University of Bologna has always attracted students from all over the world. Bologna is not a city which attracts mass tourism, but instead it welcomes the more discerning visitor. The political and religious heart of the city can be found on the Medieval Piazza Maggiore, which can be accessed via the symbolic Piazza del Nettuno on which stands a statue of the Roman god Neptune.
Bologna area
Very close to the apartment building there is "Piazza Maggiore". It is a big square bordered by medieval buildings, including the unfinished "Basilica of San Petronio". In the square stands the fountain to Neptune by "Giovanni da Bologna". From the Piazza lead miles of porticoed streets (25 miles to be exact). Sheltering beneath the porticoes are shops to suit every taste, from dusty book shops to exclusive boutiques, all the top Italian designers are represented. There are many antique shops in Bologna, some specialising in certain periods, the pottery of "Emilia Romagna" is wonderful, there are several outlets in Bologna.
There is a daily market (except Sundays) in "Via Pescherie Vecchie" where an amazing array of fresh fish and vegetables can be bought. Every second week-end of the month an antiques market is held in the beautiful "Piazza Santo Stefano", this is an open air market where stall holders display and sell their treasures. Other sites of interest include: the Gothic Cathedral, the national Picture Gallery, the Basilica of Santa Stefano, the Archiginnasio. Bologna is world renown for it’s gastronomy, visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to either pizzerias, osterias, trattorias and restaurants. There are also innumerable cafes where you can linger over a coffee and a pastry watching the stylish Bolognese go about their business.!
