The Florida / Florida Gulf Coast region

Florida’s Lee Island Coast provides access to safe, tranquil waters and inter-coastal waterways, Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. The Bokeelia Island area
Bokeelia Island is at the end of the road and is the most northerly tip of Pine Island. Bridges link Bokeelia to the mainland via Pine Island, Little Pine Island and Matlacha. The laid-back, stress free lifestyle Bokeelia offers is getting harder and harder to find and these islands are crime free and have friendly natives! The pier fishing and boat fishing are considered to be some of the best in the USA including the sports fishing around Cayo Costa in Redfish Pass, Captiva Pass, Boca Grande Pass, Gasparilla Pass, Pine Island Sound, Gasparilla Sound and the expanse of Charlotte Harbor. Salt water fly fishing is popular and local courses are available. See - www.floridaflyfishingschools.com - www.pineislandfl.com - www.pineisland.net - www.pineislandchamber.org/video.htm
Where else can you find an area with great fishing, a relaxed pace with friendly atmosphere, close-by shopping on Pine Island centre and the city life a short trip away, yet set apart from the problems that can accompany urban areas?
Warm all year round with the thermal heat store of the shallow waters of Charlotte Harbor. Pine Island has several fruit and vegetable crops year round, including mango, lychees and palm trees of all types. Inland they grow orange, lemons, limes, grapefruit, avocado, sugar cane and blue berries.
WHAT IS THERE TO DO?
While Pine Island automatically provides for superb, passive enjoyment and relaxation, it is also a great place for interactivity and exploring. Enjoy kayaking in the sheltered waters of Matlacha Pass and the Pine Island Sound Aquatic Preserve. Manoeuver your own kayak through Jug Creek www.kayak.com . Camp out at several island facilities or head for those across the sound at Cayo Costa Island State Park (accessible only by boat). Fish off the Matlacha Drawbridge. Hire a fishing guide and let him or her "do the driving" and "guarantee" to find you some nice, fresh fish! Enjoy an invigorating trip on one of the many water-taxis, or cruise/tour boats to the islands of Cabbage Key and Cayo Costa. Stop for luncheon at the islands of Cabbage Key, Captiva, Sanibel or North Captiva. On Pine Island, check out the local shops, dine and relax at a number of local, waterfront or off-water eateries and restaurants, specializing in fresh seafood, served up with a casual, low-key, islandish atmosphere and year round warmth. Scenic drives and visit to State Parks and Ding Darling Bird Sanctuaries.
FISHING
Although the sunshine, warmth, sandy beaches and stress free life is an attraction, this is a premier fishing area. Perhaps one of the best, due to its shallow, massive Charlotte Harbor plus narrow passes for strong current fish, but with protected waters and mangrove breeding areas. The sport of tarpon fishing originated in Pine Island Sound in the late 1880s. Boca Grande Pass (just 20 minutes across Pine Island Sound from Bokeelia) is considered the "Tarpon Capital of the World." Fishing from Bokeelia can be from beach, pier, flats boats and deep sea Off Shore (Big boy stuff!) Fishing can become obsessive – and once bitten, men may never be seen again! (By wife and family). Fishing from the main long pier, 200 yards away costs $8 or free direct off our sandy Seagull Bay private beach. We have also supplied our guests with several fishing rods, tackle, bait boxes etc.
BOATING
Power boats, off shore sports fishing boats, flats boats, small skiffs, pontoon boats, canoes, kayaks, ski boats and sailboats. All marinas have docks, boat lifts, winter storage and giant covered boat stores plus fuel, repair and service facilities. Many neighbours would welcome crew and the chance to take you fishing.
Boating encompasses sailing, cruising as well as pure boat fishing, we feel we would be remiss if we did not leave you with a favourite excerpt from Claiborne Young's Cruising Guide to Southwest Florida: "You could literally spend weeks exploring Pine Island Sound alone and still not exhaust all the possibilities. Secluded anchorages, good marinas, historic inns with fabulous dining, deserted, white sand beaches, beautiful state parks . . . well, the list could go on and on, but perhaps you are beginning to get the idea. There is no other portion of the Western Florida coastline that combines, in such delightful measure, the fortunate qualities of ready accessibility and fabulous, often unpopulated cruising grounds, as does the stretch between the Caloosahatchee River and Gasparilla Island! Get ready for a genuine cruising treat!" Pine Island is truly a Fishing and Boating Paradise! [A copy of this wonderful book is available at our house in Bokeelia]

and costal charts www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/11426.shtml
CYCLING
Pine Island is flat and there is a wide concrete cycle path the 15 miles to St James City. Cyclists have priority and vehicles drive slowly. This is a great way to see the area, animals and birdlife and meet the locals. Several cycles are available but for additional are available in Wal-Mart for less than $100 ($60 to $250)
