The Famagusta District
History, you will not have time to visit all the wonderful sites in and around Famagusta if you only there for a few weeks. Salamis - Ancient Roman city the site covers an area of one square mile extending along the sea shore, you can spend the whole day there enjoying the forested area with mimosa, pine and eucalyptus. Famagusta today is a fascinating mix of ruined churches, venetian houses and restored buildings, in the centre is former St Nicolas Cathedral, its gothic spires and vaulted ceiling now houses a mosque.
You can still walk along the old walls of famagusta, and even drive along the dry mount.
Bogaz is about 5 minutes drive away here you can sample real Northern Cypriot village life, where fishing boats bring their daily catch to the quayside, where fresh fish is the speciality of the clutch of unpretentious restaurants.
Cyprus Nights a must at Palm Beach Hotel, Bogaz Hotel, and Salamis Hotel normally held on Fridays, be a dare devil try an evening at a Casino, or dance the night away at Lion's Garden Nightclub or the open air Millennium Disco.
Bogaz / Iskele area
Famagusta is famous for its miles of sandy beaches, some are owned by hotels and have entrance fees, all have beach bars, sunshades and loungers, They are safe with some great spots for swimming and snorkelling.
Long beach is quiet and peaceful, as it name states you can walk for miles in the beauitful golden sand. Silver beach, has more restaurants and watersports. But if you want a beach with more life about 10 minutes drive towards Famagusta you will find Gapside, its lively and fun, and has a outdoor disco there of an evening in high season. Karpaz, a must about an hour away with 5 miles of un-spoilt beaches and scenery.
Restaurants, for lunch or a sticky pastry in the walled city head for Petek Pastanesi. There are many wonderful restaurants the 2 close to the house are Garden Restaurant which is set in the most wonderful garden, they grow all there own produce. Over the Moon, situated on Salamis Road is owned by English couple who cook a mixture of international meals, and to die for sunday roast, the large terrace that goes down to the sea has the most romantic sun set each evening.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED IN PARADISE.
You are ideally situated whether you want to soak up the sun around the pool or down on the beach, or to enjoy the countryside and want peaceful leisurely walks, Bacheler / Iskele has all that to offer.
Market day in Famagusta is Friday, the smells of all the fresh produce is wonderful, and might even get some bargin cloths etc
How to get there
At present you still can not fly directly into Northern Cyprus, if you fly with Cyprus Turkish or Turkish airlines your flight will go via mainland Turkish airport, where you will land for approximately 40 minutes, then continue to Ercan Airport in Northern Cyprus, alternatively you can fly to Larnaca on the South, and travel across the border, the bonus on this route is that you have a wider choice of airlines, and the added benefit of travelling in Euorpe and are allowed more Duty Free, whereas the Northern side is not in the EU so you are limited to Duty Free Allowance. Local Taxis and Care hire can be organised.

around the house are small patio areas so whether your a sun worshipper, or like the shade there are places to sit for everyone, in the morning with my tea you will find me on the back patio with the garden umbrella up for shade enjoying the views of the countryside and the sea. If when I get too hot I pop around to the front of the house in the shade and sit on my comfortable cain chairs, with another mug of tea, and have a little read till I am ready to head off to the beach, then evenings is the other way around, glass wine in the sun at the front of the house, and dinner in the shade at the back, that's if not going out to of the many fab restaurants near by.
