The Famagusta District
The property is located approximately 47k / 40 mins from the Ercan airport and 25 mins from Famagusta. A stones throw from the beach, 5 mins from the supermarket and the lovely peaceful fishing village of Bogaz with numerous well recommended restaurants. The North of the Island is great to explore with so much history and many ruins dating back hundreds of years the beaches like the rest of the island are untouched and so are never over crowded.
The old walled city of Famagusta, the inspiration for Shakespeare's Othello known as the Citadel still stands. During the 13th century, the city was the wealthiest on earth. Within the city walls lies the the Lala Mustafa Pasa Camii, which was formally St Nicholas Cathedral. This is one of the most spectacular Lusignan monuments in the town. Now a thriving university town, there are many shops and restaurants in the area which serve a variety of goods that you will not find back at home.
The Glapsides beach, a 10 minute drive from the city is ideal for children & non swimmers. The sand is fine, and the crystal clear water calm and shallow for a considerable distance out. In the summer, Jet skis and pedaloes are also available for hire and the Glapsides bar hosts a disco each evening.
On the road to Famagusta, you will find the ancient ruins of Salamis. This most important ancient city of Cyprus remains the island's most prominent archaeological site. There is much to see here including the mosaic paved gymnasium, fresco-adorned walls of the baths, amphitheatre and the Royal Tombs. Roman and Byzantine monuments decorate the site, which was the first place in Cyprus to mint coinage. A truly breathtaking place!
The Kyrenia District
Kyrenia the main tourist town is located an hours drive away with plenty of shops to browse and many a deal to be had for gold jewellery. Or try the shops of Nicosia. Designer brands such as Karen Millen & Burberry are made in factories in North Cyprus. One factory outlet store, Nalken, stocks the latest high street branded goods for a fraction of the price you'd pay back in the U.K. Imitations are also available in the old town market stores.
If shopping and lazing around the pool aren't your thing then why not visit the Kyrenia Animal Rescue Centre (KAR) nestled in the five fingure mountains. After a guided tour around the centre you can take one of the rescue dogs out for a walk along one of the footpaths that lead you into the mountains.
We recommend that you also take time to visit: Buffavento Castle, Kyrenia Castle and Kyrenia Harbour and Bellapais Abby.
The gothic abbey at Bellapais dates back to 1198, and is a must see landmark during your visit to North Cyprus. As well as the history of the Abbey itself, the area is also famous for past residents, which include Laurence Durrell who lived in the village during the 1950s. The idyllic days he described in his book "Bitter Lemons of Cyprus" may be long gone, but the "Tree of Idleness" remains. Like the castle in Kyrenia, the Abbey at Bellapais has also hosted world famous performers such as The Three Tenors, and hosts the annual North Cyprus Music Festival.
A visit to Saint Hilarion Castle in the Five Finger Mountains is a must. Not only does the castle provide breath taking views of the island, the mystical remains and hidden rooms and tunnels are yours to explore. The castle was rumoured to be the inspiration for Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle, so why not take a bottle of water with you and say you've seen the original! The castle is open in the morning until 1pm in the summer months, so be sure to get there early to avoid the midday heat.
A number of organised boat trips leave from Kyrenia old harbour, and provide the opportunity for you to view the island from the sea. These trips provide the opportunity to view the island coast, not possible by car alone. Ample opportunity is provided to swim in the depths of the Mediterranean, and taking a snorkel is advisable.. The world's oldest shipwreck was found off the shores of Cyprus. All day trips serve a BBQ fish lunch.
Bogaz area
In the village of Bogaz there is a small harbour, a children's play park and numerous restaurants. The Bogaz Hotel Restaurant on the beach offers live music most nights.
There is a superb little restaurant at Sunrise Beach Club, by the pool, which offers both English and Cypriot dishes. By day it doubles as a cafe serving breakfast, lunch and refreshments. The waiter is also on hand to serve your refreshments by the pool so you will have no reason to leave the comfort of your sun lounger!
There is now a gym and club room on site and will shortly be a sauna and internet room.
There are some great beaches with all of your usual watersport activities located at Salamis and Bafra a short drive in either direction along the coast. The shoreline at the resort is still very much untouched and so most prefer to spend their time by the pool on those non adventurous lazy days at Sunrise Beach Club.
If diving is your thing or you would like to have a crack at it there are numerous dive centres around. They are virtually all PADI qualified and so can offer the full range of PADI courses. Just ask when booking and we will send you their contact information.
How to get there
Flights operate from airports across the UK. You can fly into Ercan in the North (with a touch down in Turkey) or into Larnaca in the South and then get a transfer to the Resort. There are numerous low cost airlines going into the South so you can pick up some bargain flights from time to time. However there are a select few into the North and we would recommend that you try Pegasus Airlines (who fly from Stanstead), Green Island Holidays on 0207 6377338 or Cyprus Gold 0845 6019173.
You could always incorporate a trip to Istanbul in Turkey! If you organise the flights to and from Turkey yourself try either Pegasus, Turkish Airlines 0207 7669300 or Atlas Jet 0090 216443387.
We can arrange your car hire, the car will be delivered to the airport for your arrival, pay cash in English £'s and drive away. On your return leg simply park the car in the airport carpark and leave the keys in the glove box. This gives you an idea of the laid back & safe lifestyle you can expect in Northern Cyprus! If you would prefer to organise the car hire yourselves try Pacific Rent A Car, www.pacific-rentals.com. To give an idea of price our management agency have just booked a Ford Focus for one of our guests for 9 days at only £18 per day including insurance etc.
