The Famagusta District
North Cyprus has a typical Mediterranean climate with long, warm and dry summers from mid-May to mid-October and mild and wet winters from December to February. At the peak of summer in July and August the temperature crawls to the mid-30s, but the sea breeze makes a pleasant atmosphere in coastal areas. In the interior of the island the temperature during the coldest months is between 7 and 15 °C. For outdoor swimming in the pool or sea, temperatures are perfect from May to October. Some braver souls swim as early as April right through to the end of November.
Bogaz area
Bogaz (pronounced Bo'az since the g is silent) is a beautiful coastal village on the southern edge of the Karpas peninsula, where the best beaches of Cyprus are to be found. Deep-sea diving trips are organised by a British company based in the development. There are half a dozen fish restaurants ranged round the Bogaz harbour. Further up the coast, about 5 km east, are the foundations of Strongylos Castle, a Byzantine watchtower enlarged by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. Some 10 minutes' drive to the South are the famous Salamis ruins - where there is also an annual music festival. Bogaz is well sited as a base to explore the region, only a few km north of Iskele and about 25 km north of Famagusta, which has a fascinating "old city", as well as several excellent restaurants, and on the edge of Karpas.
How to get there
-Direct flights to Ercan airport in North Cyprus from London and Manchester with Cyprus Turkish Airlines, AtlasJet, or Pegasus. Flights usually have a brief stopover in mainland Turkey, but passengers for Ercan remain on board. You can book online directly on the airlines' websites: http://www.flypgs.com/EN/ http://www.atlasjet.com/en/ http://www.kthy.net/kthyen/index.html There are also a number of agents that you can book online with e.g http://www.cyprus44.com/book.asp The villa is an easy 40 minutes' drive from Ercan. Driving is on the left as in UK. Roads are mostly clear without traffic jams. -Turkish Airlines sometimes have quite cheap flights via Istanbul- check www.lastminute.com, Opodo, and similar sites. You can usually have a stopover in Istanbul for no extra charge. -Easyjet has cheap flights to Istanbul. Other charter companies go to Izmir and Dalaman. Connecting flights to Ercan can be obtained at very reasonable prices with Pegasus Airlines, Cyprus Turkish Airlines, and Atlasjet. We have found combining a 2-centre holiday either through Dalaman for Fethiye and surrounding areas or via Istanbul or Izmir very enjoyable. -Fly to Larnaca airport and drive over the border into North Cyprus. Lots of cheap holiday charter flights into Larnaca. Lots of good deals with scheduled airlines too. Try www.lastminute.com, thomsonfly, excelairways, thomas cook airlines, etc.We have had very good deals on Lufthansa with Air Miles and on lastminute.com. Journey time from Larnaca approx 90 minutes to the villa. Crossing the border is straightforward, the border being open 24 hours. You will need to purchase extra insurance at the border if you are getting your car rental from the South. The charge is very modest. These formalities are routine. If you are using a car rental company from the North, they will collect you from Larnaca for an additional fee-around £60 return. One of our neighbours on the site also runs airport transfers - details on request. -There is also an inexpensive very convenient ferry service from Mersin, Turkey if you wish to do a 2-centre holiday in that area of Turkey We have been through both Larnaca and Ercan airports and find that Ercan airport is much less crowded and more pleasant than Larnaca. Car rental in North Cyprus is also cheaper and much less hassle, you pay the agreed price all inclusive upfront in cash (sterling pound will do), and you may leave keys in car on departure. No unpleasant surprises on the credit card on coming home either - as is common with car rental companies elsewhere. A car is pretty much essential. We have used several car rental companies in North Cyprus- all have been excellent e.g Sur Rent A Car - check www.surrentacar.com for details, Sun Rent-A-Car www.sunrentacar.com, triprentacar@mail.com. Prices are very reasonable from £18 per day all inclusive for many different makes and models of car, to £35 per day for seven-seater people carriers in peak season.
