The Old Stone House + Cottage
About the home
The beautifully restored house is set in Gokcebel, a small village approximately 2 km from Yalikavak town. Built on the site of an ancient Girel Castle, where remains of the old walls, public baths and cisterns can still be found it is one of the oldest houses in the village, with an interesting history. Although just a short drive from Yalikavak beach and the more cosmopolitan pleasures of Bodrum, the village itself has not succumbed to modern intrusions, and in the narrow lanes one can experience Turkish village life at its most authentic.
The garden is on several levels, with 3 seating areas. There is a purpose built BBQ and pergola with grapes, roses and jasmine trained over, affording perfect shade for those hot and sunny summer days. The private swimming pool cannot be overlooked. This unusual historic home is for the more discerning who want privacy and seclusion, yet close to all the restaurants, bars and shops for that perfect holiday .
Mulberry Cottage is more recently built and attached to one end of the stone house, but is completely separate, with its own entrance, roof terrace, patio garden and parking space, There can be no intrusion on the main house. It is fully air-conditioned.

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

You can pretty much guarantee blue skies, sunshine and warm water on the Aegean Coast in the summer. In general they have mild winters and good summers, the southern coast hitting the high 30s in June and staying high until well into the autumn. Temperatures of 40 degrees are not unknown in August, although prevailing breezes wafting the Northern part of the peninsula keep it pleasant.
Beautiful long stretches of sand coupled with intricate rocky coves and sharply bright aquamarine water set against a backdrop of deep green pine tree forests make this coastline a strikingly beautiful place, there are still hidden away places where you can enjoy its charm alone. If you are a history buff, then this is the place for you, it's groaning with it!
Close by is the ancient harbour of Gumusluk, where you can still see parts of the old Greek city under the waters. Bodrum town boasts an amphitheatre and St Peter's Castle complete with dungeons dating from the Crusades. The small, but perfectly formed Iassos ancient city lies beyond Gulluk about an hour's drive, you will find a great fish restaurant there too; so make a day of it! Further afield, but only a couple of hours away, is the massive Temple of Apollo in Didim, the ancient amphitheatres at Priene and Milet and the spectacular almost complete ancient city at Ephes although the furthest (3-4 hours) is deemed to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Prepare to be amazed!
The Bodrum / Yalikavak area
Yalikavak, about 1.5 kms from Gokcebel, is a charming unspoiled village, nestling amongst lush tangerine and lemon orchards, with a functioning fishing harbour where visiting yachts and fishing boats bob cheerfully together. More relaxed than the busier holiday resorts, it exudes a wonderful mix of laid back local life and Mediterranean chic. Yalikavaks' boundaries stretch in the North from the old marina, right around the bay, to the brand new modern Port Bodrum marina to the south, which hosts numerous world-class sailing events throughout the year. Life in and around the region focuses on the sea and is a mecca for water sport enthusiasts, with kite and windsurfing and scuba diving topping the bill. For those in search of a more languid affair, a private gulet charter around some of the local islands is a must, which can be arranged with us. Between the two marinas are a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and many small sandy beaches, where you can sit with an ice cold drink and watch the best sunsets on the peninsula. The main street in Yalikavak is well served with a variety of shops and supermarkets. Behind the main village is the Bus Station, Municipal offices, bank and the area on which the Yalikavak market is held every Thursday. This market was voted in the TOP Three markets in the whole of Turkey in 2009.
Yalikavak, now known as 'The Saint Tropez of Turkey' truly has the potential to become one of the hotspots of the area.
Bodrum, 15 kms from Yalikavak, is a town of many parts, sophisticated and fun, tranquil and hectic. Set on the harbour with its focal point of the beautiful 12th C. St. Peter’s castle, it boasts hundreds of bars and restaurants and a lively yacht club right on the water’s edge. This is a sophisticated haunt, encompassing different style restaurants great bars and clubs with live music 'till late.
The original town is a maze of little alleys and lanes twisting and turning around its sugar cube houses with their mysterious high-walled gardens. It is an all year round place, which makes it so special for the out of season visitor; no dead streets with nowhere to find a meal whenever November strikes. There is a summer music and film festival in Bodrum every year.
Bitez has beautiful sandy beaches great watersports and the best Sunday brunches I have ever tasted.

Cosy home with beautyful garden and well groomed swimming pool - if you are not in the mood you do not feel any need to leave this beautiful home |
Guestbook for The Old Stone House + Cottage
"We had a wonderful time at the Old Stone House. It was perfect for our needs. the pool was particularly inviting. It is in a perfect position for touring the Bodrum Peninsula and beyond, but you do need a car. We were disappointed that there were no restaurants within walking distance so someone always had to drive. Being an old house a couple of the doorways were quite low and everyone in our party managed to bump their head at least once during our stay. These two problems aside this is a perfect place to stay for a comfortable, relaxing, quiet holiday."
"What a beautiful, beautiful place it is - everything and more more than we
were looking forward to, a wonderful grren oasis. The terracing was
perfect, the hammock bliss, the pool fantastic (just right for the space,
and bigger than expected). We've been fortunate to have stayed in a number
of lovely properties in our travels round the Aegean, but this was the
non-pareil. Inside is wonderfully disposed and decorated. I am entirely
envious."
We have just returned home after a wonderful stay at Mulberry Cottage. You have built a delightful oasis, furnished the house with charm, provided every comfort and even found time to cultivate a terrific garden and install a truly smashing pool. I shall always remember those lovely warm summer evenings with dinner under the pergola and the smell of jasmine in the air as well as the refreshing early morning air and the diaphanous Mediterranian sunlight before things have started to stir in the village and the heat of the day has set in.
Martin Smith.
We just came back but if we could we will go back immediately.
Thanks again for the very nice accommodation.
Frankly speaking in only very occasion we found an arrangement so well equipped and well-trimmed in all the details, without forgetting all the useful information and assistance provided by you.

Dear Eljay
Thank you so much! We have just returned from the best holiday ever! We loved your house and the area and had an amazing time relaxing and exploring. Our boys played football with the boys from the village up at the school and they loved getting a better view of real Turkish life. Our first week in Olu Deniz was beautiful but very touristy.
