Home description

Mandarin Cottage stands at the far end of the garden from the main house which is occupied by an English woman who decided to make her home in Turkey.

The kitchen opens onto a furnished vine-covered terrace, whilst the bedroom upstairs has a large balcony overlooking the garden. For sunbathing and lazy evenings in, there is a shaded seating area with rug and cushions for relaxing. The garden abounds with vegetables and fruit, such as plums, pomegranates, tangerines and lemons and in season guests are welcome to pick their own.

Bitez is an appealing small resort set in a wide bay with a sand and shingle beach and shallow waters ideal for swimming. The bay is also popular for windsurfing and other watersports and daily boat trips set out from the tiny harbour. Beyond the seafront are extensive tangerine and olive groves.

Footpaths lead inland to Bitez village where a more traditional rural life continues including a weekly farmers’ market. A well-stocked mini-market is 50 metres from the cottage and supermarkets are within five kilometres. Frequent minibuses pass the main gate for Bodrum, six km away.

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

This part of the Turkish coastline is one of the most glorious in Europe. There are still many unspoilt bays with pine forests running down to the shore, explored and enjoyed best by boat.

The area is thickly studded with archaeological sites many within an hour or so from Bodrum. Chief among them are Labranda, Euromos, Iasos, Stratoniceia and Gerga. Further afield but doable in a day are Ephesus, Priene, Miletus, Didyma and Heraklia.

Bodrum / Bitez area

Bodrum, an ancient port, bursting with character and charm, has always had a distinguished place in history as the site of the Mausoleum, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. King Mausolos had started building the local amphitheatre which was completed by the Romans.

Parts have been restored and the site is now home to concerts during the summer season. The view of Bodrum and the Aegean is breathtaking from the site. The Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights of St. John in the early 15th century is the centrepiece of Bodrum.

The initial walls were completed using materials from the Mausoleum. It now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology and is a popular venue for concerts and the annual ballet festival.

Bitez, a charming small resort set in a wide bay, is perfectly placed 5 km west of Bodrum, only 15 minutes away by minibus. This allows guests to visit Bodrum in the evening for its shops and nightlife after spending the day by the sea. Bitez beach has a long stretch of sand and shingle and shallow waters, ideal for swimming.

The bay is also popular for windsurfing and watersports and there are daily boat trips from the tiny harbour. The seafront promenade is lined with restaurants and small shops. Beyond the seafront, extensive mandarin and olive groves are crossed with footpaths that lead inland to Bitez village with its weekly farmers’ market.

The ground floor has a fully equipped kitchen, leading into the sitting room and the bathroom. Stairs lead up to the bedroom which opens onto a large balcony.

The kitchen is well designed with table and five chairs, a fridge incorporating a freezer, full sized electric oven, gas and electric hob and dishwasher. The sitting room has a single divan with orthopaedic mattress. The bathroom has a full-sized bath, shower, WC and washing machine.

The bedroom has a king sized bed formed from two single beds with orthopaedic mattresses. All bed linen is made from pure cotton. Bath and beach towels are provided.

The kitchen opens onto a vine-covered terrace with table and seating for breakfast and drinks. Beyond this there is a paved area with dining table, dining chairs and umbrella.

For sunbathing and lazy evenings in, there is a shaded seating area with rugs and cushions for relaxing. The garden is well lit and abounds with vegetables and fruit such as plums, pomegranates, tangerines and lemons and, in season, guests are welcome to pick their own.

Welcome pack is provided on arrival. Cleaning by arrangement at extra cost. Although garden is shared with owner and her cats, privacy is respected. Owner usually on hand to answer questions.

Guestbook for Mandarin Cottage

"We have just returned from spending a week (mid-September 2009) at Mandarin Cottage, Pomelan Caddesi, Bitez. There were cloudless and brilliant blue skies every day; the air temperature was around 30C and the sea temperature around 27C. Just perfect!

The cottage forms a totally separate annex to the English owner's main house, and is situated at the end of the garden and reached via a paved stone path. On the ground floor it comprises a very well-equipped kitchen, a bathroom and small sitting-room/bedroom with a staircase leading up to the master-bedroom which has a door leading to the roof-terrace hung with vines. Outside, a canopied area with three sofas (perfect for an afternoon siesta) and a dining-area with teak table and chairs and large umbrella for shade. The whole cottage and grounds have been decorated and prepared with consummate care and taste, and it reminded us of some of Marrakech’s best 'riads'.

We have travelled just about everywhere in the world, and our standards are very high. Mandarin Cottage and its facilities most definitely meet all these. Most importantly, the beach is just 200 metres from it, and an excellent shop selling the majority of items needed for a self- catering holiday just minutes away. There are also literally dozens of restaurants within minutes of the cottage. The beaches along this coastline are some of the cleanest in the world, and many have been awarded the opportunity to fly the Blue Flag, a Danish mark of hygiene given only to beaches that meet the very highest standards of cleanliness. We hired a car for our stay, but if you don't want to self-drive, there are excellent, frequent and cheap bus-services to Bodrum which stop right outside, and to and from the airport. Mandarin Cottage is perfectly positioned and we cannot recommend it too highly.
