The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Bodrum Peninsula is one of the most beautiful parts of Turkey’s Aegean Coast. Yalikavak is an authentic fishing village with has retained its individual character but serves its many international visitors very well. There are many idyllic beaches dotted around the coastline, many of them offering watersports. Yalikavak beach is well served by restaurants and bars. This is a peaceful and relaxing setting. The sun beds are free if you buy a drink from the bars which line the sea front.
Gumusluk, again is an authentic fishing village renowned worldwide for its fabulous fish restaurants which front its beautiful sandy beach. It occupies the site of ancient Myndos, founded by King Mausolus in about 350 BC. The remains of a sunken city lie off shore. Originally Gumusluk was famous in the region for its silver mines. Visitors can access Gumulsuk using the local dolmus, taxi or enjoy the daily boat trips which leave the harbour in Yalikavak.
The summer season runs from April to October, with temperatures ranging from 20c to 30c, peaking in July and August. However, flights now run from Manchester and Birmingham all year round.
Yalikavak is ideally placed for exploring the area by boat as there are several Gullets in the harbour which offer Aegean trips, including lunch, swimming, snorkelling, diving and sun bathing. Charter boats are also available at a reasonable price. Ferry trips to the Greek island of Kos run from Bodrum and Turgutreis on a daily basis.
Yalikavak is a traditional Turkish fishing village on the northern (quieter and less commercialised) coast of the Bodrum Peninusla. It is worth noting that Turkey has the lowest crime rate in Europe. It is a perfect retreat for those more discerning of travellers looking for a quieter holiday but within easy reach of Bodrum and Gumbet with its many all night bars and discos. Halikarnus is the largest open air disco in Europe! It is well served by the local bus service (Dolmus approx 60p to Bodrum) with routes to all resorts on the peninsula. There is no need for car hire and even if you wish to explore further afield the coach services are superb.
By day the streets are relatively quiet, while visitors lie on the beach or shelter in the shade, but after sunset Yalikavak has a lively night life with a plentiful supply of excellent restaurants and friendly bars. There are a couple of discos to cater for the younger holiday makers. The bars and taverns are visited by locals and visitors alike and are friendly and welcoming. The quality of food provided by the restaurants is excellent and will appeal to all tastes whether you would like to sample the wonderful Turkish cuisine, choose freshly caught fish or go for a large juicy steak – the choice is limitless!
Banks and Cash machines are plentiful as are local supermarkets. Makro, B&Q plus Marks and Spencer stores are all on the route to Bodrum. There is also a large open air market held in the village every Thursday where local produce of fresh fruit and vegetables is plentiful along with spices, “designer” jeans, shoes and clothes.
