The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Over the centuries the fortunes, the people and the geographic borders of the countries and islands of the Aegean region have changed many times.
Political and religious differences between the countries bordering the Aegean have often divided the people, raising invisible barriers to cultural exchange.
5000 years of turbulent history has left its mark, with an untold wealth of historical buildings both in Greece and Turkey. The dawning of the third millennium has heralded a warming of relations between Turkey and Greece, paving the way for some exciting tourism opportunities.
It is now easier than ever to combine a visit to the Turkish Aegean region with a visit to the nearby Greek Islands, making it possible to explore a region that not only spans the entire history of civilization, but also two continents.
Bodrum / Gumusluk Village area
Gumusluk This peaceful village is one of the oldest settlements on the peninsula. It has modest restaurants two or three small markets and shops selling local artefacts, but it retains a small-scale atmosphere for the simple reason that most of the village is designated an official archaeological site so that no landscaping alterations or new groundbreakings are allowed.
This status is designed to protect the ancient site of Myndos, which is partially covered by Gümüslük. The original Lelegian city of Myndos stood a few kilometers southeast of here. In the 4th century BC King Mausolus decided to build a new Myndos and transplanted the entire population. The locals have made good use of the ruins and it is not unusual to see marble pillars used as steps to villas or the remains of roman villas providing shelter for the local farmers cattle.
If you walk for ten minutes to the bay north east of Gümüslük you will see a buried wall jutting from a hillside into the sea. While the area's archaeological status forbids diving with tanks, snorklers will find more walls under water here, as well as an ancient breakwater in the harbour.
The island, known as Rabbit Island by the locals, separates the two well-sheltered bays of Gümüslük. If you sit in a shoreside restaurant and watch for a while you will see rabbits on the island. A villager who sells them in markets elsewhere raises them there. It is possible to wade to the island through knee-deep water and sunbathe and dive from the many rock formations. Several restaurants have terraced roof, perfect for enjoying the tranquil scene or for watching the sunset. There are many excellent restaurants supplying fantastic food, particularly fresh fish and seafood, of good quality in an uncrowded environment. A visit to cafe Limon on the road to the villa from Gumusluk is a must for really good Mezes in a quirky setting watching the sun set behind Pserimos. Restaurants in the village are literally feet from the sea and are typified by their rushwoven umbrellas. It is easy to waste many hours sat in the comfortable low seating with one foot in the sea sipping a cool drink.
On the route back to Bodrum it is possible to see one of the few remaining working windmills in the area, facing northwest to catch the prevailing summer winds to drive the blades, it grinds locally grown wheat by the traditional method.
Bodrum Bodrum was the city of Halikarnassos in ancient times, an important port in the centre of the old world. Modern Bodrum is to Turkey, what Cannes is to the South of France. It is everything and anything you want it to be, historic, interesting, relaxing and lively.
An imposing Crusader Castle overlooks the harbor and the International Marina. When you have had enough of the many harbor-side bars, restaurants and historical sights, there is still a whole peninsula to explore. Mountains and green valleys, traditional villages and isolated beaches, all within view of the warm clear waters of the Aegean Sea.
A twice weekly market attracts people from the villages around the Bodrum, adding another dimension to this popular resort. There are also many local markets in the villages around the peninsula including those at Yalikavak (10 mins drive from Gumusluk) and Turgutries (15 mins drive from Gumusluk).
How to get there
