The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Gündogan Village is located on the Bodrum Peninsula in the South West corner of Turkey separated from Greece by the beautiful Aegean Sea. The climate is quite varied here with mild but sometimes wet winters although averaging more than 320 days sunshine. The winter rainfall means that this area is pleasantly green with forests and beautiful flowers and plants with the stunning bougainvillea very prevalent in the area.
The sun shines from April to Oct. Days are long and sunny and nights are warm and balmy with a gentle breeze ever present in Gündogan due to the shape of the harbor. Villa Farilya located on a hillside benefits greatly from the breeze even on the hottest of days.
History & Culture:
Turkey is an ancient civilisation with a fascinating history and this area provides opportunity to visit many interesting historical sights. The first signs of habitation in this area can be traced back to the Chalcolithic Age 5500-3000 B.C. as a result of artefacts found in a cave near Gündogan in the mid 1990's. Nearby Big Rabbit Island contains the remains of a Byzantine monastic settlement circa 9th century A.D. A short distance down the coast is Gümüslük village home to the ruins of the sunken city of Myndos now visible underwater.
The sky line of Bodrum is dominated by the Castle of St Peter dating back to 15th century and built on the site of the palace of Mausolus the Persian Governor of Halikarnas (ancient name for Bodrum). As well as being a major landmark in Bodrum the Castle is in excellent condition and is home to an archaeological museum containing underwater archaeology and a fine collection of antiquities.
Approximately 2.5 hours drive from Gündogan is the truly remarkable remains of the old Roman city of Ephesus which includes the temple of Artemis (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world) where St Paul preached and is an extremely well preserved example of ancient Roman times. It is really worthwhile going here and also investing in a professional guide as every stone tells an amazing story.
Located between Ephesus and Selçuk is 'Mereyemana ' the House of the Virgin Mary which according to Christian traditional beliefs was the last home on earth of the mother of Jesus and where she lived after the Resurrection of Christ - it is believed she was brought here by the Apostle John who was originally from this area. Regardless of your religious beliefs 'Mereyemana' does have a spiritual and peaceful feeling and you will enjoy a few quiet moments here.
Modern day Turkey is a very large country straddling Europe and Asia, is home to approx 70 million people and has a varied economic and social culture ranging from traditional poorly educated rural communities to sophisticated and cosmopolitan cities. Although predominantly Muslim, Turkey is a secular society and is tolerant and welcoming of people of all faiths and cultures. As a major tourist city Bodrum is a modern and vibrant society quite Mediterranean in atmosphere with a distinct dash of the East due to the Mosques visible on the skyline and the haunting call to prayer. Turkish people are friendly and hospitable and will go out of their way to be helpful and make sure you enjoy your holiday.
Language:
Turkish. English is widely spoken in shops and restaurants in Bodrum.
Currency:
Turkish Lira. Many shops in Bodrum will accept Euro /Sterling/ US$ as well.
Automated Teller Machines ( ATMs / Cash Dispensers ) are plentiful in the area and you can withdraw both Turkish Lira and other currencies - Euro / Sterling / US dollars in many of them. There are about 5 ATMs in Gundogan village alone. These are located in the main square close to the Migros Supermarket.
Major Credit Cards are accepted in most restaurants and shops.
Time Zone: +2 hrs GMT
The Bodrum / Gundogan area
Gündogan formerly known as 'Farilya' (sunrise) is a small village about 18 km North West of Bodrum city.
While popular with Turkish holiday makers it has remained undiscovered by mass tourism retaining a rural tranquillity and old world charm that urges the visitor to relax and adopt a slower pace of life. With one of the longest beaches in the area and a constant breeze Gündogan is very popular with water sports enthusiasts and offers opportunity for windsurfing, paragliding, snorkelling, jetsking , fishing, sailing , boat trips etc.
There are no bars / nightclubs in Gundogan. Instead you will find a more relaxed approach to evening entertainment centred around a small number of beach front restaurants. These restaurants serve delicious Turkish food like Mezes (selection of starters) freshly caught fish and other dishes like Tavuk (chicken) and Köfte (Meatballs) washed down with some local Turkish wines or the local tipple Raki (an aniseed flavour clear drink that turns white when mixed with water / ice and packs quite a punch!).
Mealtimes are relaxed in Turkey with the company and conversation equally as important as the food. Why not blend in with the locals and enjoy a lengthy evening meal on the beach front or one of the many jetties with the sound of the water lapping beside you and the occasional fish jumping in the water . As day gives way to night the beautiful sunset is replaced by the twinkling lights of the white houses on the hillsides around the bay.
Bodrum is actually the name of the peninsula as well as the name of the main resort / city. The Bodrum peninsula is relatively small with villages dotted all around the coast each having its own unique charm and easily accessible from Villa Farilya. You can easily drive to all of these or take a dolmus from Gündogan bus station around the coast stopping off wherever takes your fancy. The scenery alone makes the trip memorable.
If you fancy a more lively night out during your stay Bodrum is just 30 mins away by car or dolmus(every 30 mins until the early hours). A stylish and cosmopolitan resort sometimes referred to as the ' St Tropez ' of Turkey , Bodrum has a great range of restaurants, bars and clubs to suit every taste and budget including the Catarman ( a sailing nightclub !) and the beautiful Bodrum Marina Yacht Club.
There is also the option of sampling the night life in one of the many neighbouring villages. Yalikavak approx 15 mins drive from Gundogan has a bit more of a tourist feel with some bars offering Sky sports etc. A little more commercialised than Gundogan and more laid back than Bodrum it offers another alternative. Others to consider for day or evening are Turgutreis , Bitez , Gumbet , Gumusluk and Golturkbuku all accessible from Villa Farilya and each with something different to offer the visitor.
Taxis are available at the Gündogan otogar ( bus station ) 24 hours a day and will take you home to Herodot if you want to stay out after the last bus home and cost approx 20 Turkish Lira ( 8 euro).
Shopping:
Bodrum is a paradise for those who enjoy shopping – jewellery , leather , shoes , pashminas , carpets , ceramics , handbags , clothing etc , from expensive designer goods to cheaper options. Name it and you will find it here. There is a range of quality and prices so it pays to shop around. Bartering or haggling is acceptable in most shops and the locals make it fun. Each town on the Bodrum peninsula has its own market day. Bodrum itself is home to a large market on Tuesday and Friday (mostly food and produce on Friday with textiles / clothes etc on Tues) . Gündogan is on Wednesday. Yalikavak on Thurs and Turgutreis on Sat. These are colourful and fun with haggling essential as the first price is based on the assumption that you are going to try for a better deal! Enter into the spirit of the market traders and you will have a great time even if you don't buy a lot! The smaller markets like Gundogan are attended by just as many locals as tourists so you will get a change to be part of everyday life in a more rural part of Turkey than just the main holiday resorts.
Bodrum is starting to join the golf holiday destinations with the opening of the new Bodrum Golf Club at Vita Park in Tuzla. There are also a couple of water parks nearby ( Ortakent near Bodrum ) and many different boat and bus trips that you may take as you choose including a ferry to the Greek islands of Rhodes and Kos. Other attractions are horse riding, bike hire and a diving centre close to Bodrum. Regardless of what you like to do on holidays it is all within easy reach of Villa Farilya . The choice is yours.

Guestbook for Villa Farilya
"We had a great holiday in the time we spent in Villa Farilya. Villa Farilya is so attractive with beautiful sea view. We found that the house was very clean and the neighbours were very charming and helpful. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to stay in Villa Farilya and Gundogan'"E Kostem , Istanbul, July 2010.
"We had an exceptional holiday at Heredot. A great family oriented environment where the other owners were very welcoming, and from many corners of the World. My 7 year old son made lots of friends and even got to play football with some of the local Turkish lads on a nearby purpose built pitch. Simply stunning views from the villa and the pool, and for when you want a quiet night in good amenities in the villa including the entire collection of Fawlty Towers! Also check out meatball sandwich at the pool bar! Great holiday, thank you!. " MH from Farnham, Surrey, plus partner and son. July 2010.
" Most amazing holiday! Couldn’t believe that it was as described on the website, but it was. The views are amazing, the locals so friendly and the area so unspoilt by tourism. The pool is fantastic overlooking the sea and is not busy at all. The villa is perfect and really spacious and set in possibly one of the best places on the complex, very close to the pool, but still quiet and private with the surrounding garden.Really had an amazing time and will be returning to Gundogan! "
Family of 4 from London. Aug 2010
We really enjoyed our holiday. The house had everything we needed and more. It didn't have the feeling of a ' holiday let ' . Swimming pool is to die for - kids never left it. We had it to ourselves a lot of the time and the house is just up the steps so completely chilled.
Family of 4 - UK June 2011
We had a wonderful vacation. The villa was in a perfect location for the pool and we all loved that aspect. Gundogan is a lovely village so quaint and peaceful and the people are so friendly. We also went to Yalikavak & Bodrum while were were there. Bodrum is beautiful and great for shopping. We had a car which was great to get around but we also took the bus down to the Village once or twice to enjoy a beer or two!
If we ever come back to Bodrum we would not stay anywhere else.
July 2011 - USA - extended family.
We really liked the house and location here. The Turkish people living here made it very different to the usual tourist resort. Great for kids to mix with Turkish kids - everyone really friendly. The house is good for a family - roomy and plenty of utensils for self catering. The phrase book in the house came in handy when I was trying to buy food once or twice!
All in all though the photos and text on the ad are spot on in describing the house and place although photos do not do the view justice - how could they ?
We will be back next year.
Family holiday - July 2011.
We had a wonderful time. Fantastic view. Great neighbours. Thanks for all your help.
