The Bodrum Peninsula is one of the the most beautiful parts of Turkey's Aegean Coast. There are many small fishing villages and resorts scattered around the coast, each with their own individual character. There are numerous beaches with many offering an array of watersports.
Local attractions include Ephesus, the largest archaelogical site in the world, the stunning pools at Pamukkale, the temple of Apollo at Didim and St Peter's castle built by the crusaders are just 10 miles away in Bodrum. A real treat is a range of boat trips that can be taken from Yalikavak or Bodrum that visit many secluded coves. .
Temperatures in the summer month can reach 40 but there is lovely cool wind in Yalikavak that makes it very comfortable.
The Bodrum / Yalikavak area
Yalikavak
Yalikavak is a old fishing and sponge diving village but at the same time has become a relatively new resort on the north west coast of the Bodrum peninsula. Yalikavak has several palm fringed beaches, crystal clear waters and its new 400 berth fashionable ''Port Bodrum'' marina, complex with some very nice shops and cafe/bars, there is also a new amphitheater that holds regular shows and concerts during the summer. The town has a good selection of shops in the main bazaar area and the old harbour is lined with fish restaurants. The beach is long and is looked over by a variety of cafes and bars. Although it does not have the frantic night life of Bodrum, there is a pleasant buzz around.
From the Villa it is between 2 to 5 minutes walk to the sea front where there are umpteen restaurants overlooking the bay. Here fishing boats and traditional Turkish gulets moor side by side. Yalikavak's beach is in the midst of restaurants and small boutique hotels. Several of them put out loungers on the beach which they are happy for you to use - all for the price of a drink! Turkish restaurants are normally excellent and reasonably priced. Some have an very good reputation for their fish dishes. The Turkish people are extremely friendly and welcoming and it is easy to make some new friends here. People working in and around the restaurants generally speak some English. There are also many shops in Yalikavak, several along by the seafront. There is a very popular market held in Yalikavak near here all day on Thursday.
There are many boats trips from the sea front at Yalikavak taking you for the day to the various bays or islands and sometimes it will pull in to the charming fishing village of Gumusluk. Often the captain, within reason, will take you wherever you fancy. Normally you will be taken in a traditional Turkish gulet, these are attractive boats to look at, and the trips normally include meals, drinks, and snacks. Prices start around £11 which is very reasonable.
Assorted types of water sports are available in the area including diving. In the Kudur area of Yalikavak there is a beach club called the Xuma Beach Club. It is quite exclusive and there is an entry charge. There is a mixture of water sports offered here and they hire out Jet Skis. The Beach Club includes restaurants and bars and it is very popular.
At some of the shops in Yalikavak you are able to arrange excursions to places well known such as Ephesus, Pumukkale and Capodecia. Or perhaps you might like to have a Turkish or Mud bath, or even a Turkish evening with belly dancing. It's all on offer here. Several excursions are by coach and some may involve staying a night at a Hotel.
Bodrum
Bodrum is a stylish, cosmopolitan, upmarket area with a myriad of luxurious yachts and numerous gullets sitting around its harbour. It has an abundance of shops, restaurants and bars, notably around the sea front area. By the Marina's entrance there are the more exclusive designer shops. You may have heard of the well known, outdoors night club called Halikinarsos, said to be the largest in the Mediterranean, which is in Bodrum. This is very popular. There are several other night clubs in Bodrum, one of them based on a catamaran moored there. It is quite lively here at night wheras Yalikavak is quieter. As you go towards Bodrum coming from Yalikavak, you will see on your right a large waterpark. It looks like great fun for the kids! From Bordum Harbour you can get a ferry to the Greek Islands off Kos and Rhodes as they are very nearby, in fact you can see them from many parts of the Bodrum Peninsula. You can also arrange for trips to Cappodocia, Pumlakale and Ephesus as well as various boats and scuba diving trips. Most of these trips are very reasonable. Bodrum is only about 20 minutes drive from Yalikavak. If you have chosen not to hire a car, it is easy to hop on a Dolmus - this is a very cheap turquoise coloured minibus. There is a Dolmus Station in the general shopping area in Yalikavak.
Other Local Places to See
There are many other interesting seaside places and inland ancient villages to visit on the Bodrum Peninsula. Torba is very green, surrounded by pine forests and has an especially beautiful bay. Just a few steps from Gumusluk's seafront is the ancient underwater city of Mindos (be aware that it is not permitted to remove any relics that you find here). You could also wade across to Rabbit Island to see the rabbits! Gumusluk is known for its excellent fish restaurants. Turgetreis is quite a lively place, with a large sandy beach and many shops and restaurants. Turkbuku is also lovely and known as a place where the wealthy Turks holiday. Then again there's Gundogan, another seaside resort with restaurants, bars and another lovely beach. There are many more places to visit than these, if you want to see them all it is best to hire a car and just meander along the coastal roads and take in the views!

Well positioned and well equiped villa. A very short walk to the beach and resturants. Loads of kit for us to use, bikes, stuff for the beach, even washing machine and dishwasher had the powder to use. Really pleasant outside area and roof terrace. When the sun goes down there are even a good supply of DVDs to settle down in front of. A great base for a relaxing family holiday. |
