The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Turkey's Mediterranean shore, called the Turquoise Coast, is nearly 1600 km (994 miles) long, scattered with fine-sand beaches and sprinkled abundantly with classical cities turned to picturesque ruins.
The Turquoise Coast is the first place to think of when you're considering a seaside vacation in Turkey. It has more and better beaches and resorts than does the Aegean coast, and warmer, saltier water than the Black Sea coast.
The Taurus (Toros) Mountains form a dramatic backdrop along much of the coast, often dropping steeply right into the sea, but in some places rivers have washed down enough sediment over the ages to form beaches backed by fertile alluvial plains good for growing cotton, vegetables, and even tropical fruits like bananas.
Bodrum / Gumusluk Village area
The Father of History - Herodotus, describes his birth place that; "the world's most beautiful skyline & the best climate". Bodrum and environs etches a special place in everyone's heart. Over the years it has become a specially desired place to settle for both the Turkish people from big cities and foreign visitors.
Once known as Halicarnassus, the popular Aegean resort and yachting port of Bodrum boasts the ruins of the original Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, as well as the lofty Castle of St Peter, a Crusader fortress which now serves as the world's fırst and foremost Museum of Underwater Archeology, and displays artifacts dating as far back as the Bronze Age.
There are regular bus services between Turkey, Europe & Middle East. Passenger and car ferries apart from numerous cruises in the Mediterranean, several foreign shipping companies have regular services to the port of Bodrum. There are 3 marinas in the Bodrum Peninsula, at Bodrum city, Yalıkavak and Turgutreis.
The seaside village and fishing port of Gumusluk in Turkey is all that remains of the ancient city of Myndos which was destroyed hundreds of years ago. The remains of the foundations of buildings can be clearly seen in the knee deep water that leads to rabbit island. The island has building fragments scattered around dating back to antiquity and offers a panoramic view of Gumusluk cove and beach.
Snorkelling is spectacular with abundant sea life and the views of submerged ancient ruins can be found making a day trip to Gumusluk very rewarding. The fish restaurants on the beach serve excellent fresh food, caught locally and you are guaranteed a spectacular view. Sun-loungers and cushions are available for free but you may wish to purchase a drink or snack from the cafe which can be brought to you if you wish.
