The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Bodrum's ancient name is Halicarnassus, people have lived in this area for thousands of years. It is known as the Turquoise Coast/lycia, this adjective descibes the Aegean Sea exactly.
There are many small bays and villages, these are best visited on one of the boat trips for sale. You can also use the local transport bus (Dolmus), this is a very cheap way to experience real Turkey.
The summer climate is dry and hot, the sea delighfully warm.
The area is quite Mountaineous and hilly, all road lead to the sea.
Bodrum harbour has a stunniing marina, the commercial harbour is where you can get the ferry to Kos ..You can also charter a yacht or Gulet for the day to visit the many other small bays and islands. The ancient Castle of St. Peter stands guard over this bustling port, this is well worth a visit, as is the Local Tuesday Market
The ancient Amphitheatre located on the main road just outside the town is also a must.
The lively resort of Gumbet joins ont Bodrum, it is not that long ago when a boat was need to get from one to the other.
The water park is on the main road out of Bodrum heading towards Turgutreis.
Bodrum area
.Aurora is located overlooking the small bay call Kuckukbuk (small bay), a 10 minute stroll down to the bay you end up on the sandy beach, where you can sample the varied local food including Meza ( similar to Spanish Tapas) locally caught sea bream and sea bass, outside the restaurants, they offer oysters for you to enjoy while taking a quiet evening stroll. The bay has three jetties, at night these are aglow with the light from candles placed on the tables where you can enjoy an inexpensive meal with wine and hear lap of the water beneath.
Gundogan is a five minute car drive. the harbour and seafront boast many fine restaurants, the choice is yours, this is a very Turkish resort a favourite with the wealthy from Istanbul, don't be surprised to see Porches, BMW's and many other top of the range cars, alongside all the hire cars.
Drive for 45minutes and you arrive at the exclusive fishing village of Gumusluk, park up stroll through the narrow road where you can haggle for local pottery and jewellery, the front is one fish (Balik) restaurant after another, at the very end is our favourite we call it th Fig Tree, as there is a huge Fig tree in the seating are, surrounded by low table and plump comfy cushions where you can lie back and enjoy a glass of the local Raki!! on chilly evenings the owner lights up the huge log fire.
Drive on for another 5mins and as you go up hill you will see the Limon, the small restaurant/bar, is the place to watche the amazing sunsets across Rabbit Island, the chairsand tables stretch down the hill towards the Olive groves and the sparkling Azure Aegean, the trees glitter with crystals hanging from the branches swaying in the breeze, on chilly evenings you will be offered pasminas/throws to snug and warm.
Turgutreis is in the area, do not mis the gigantic Saturday market, wher the produced looks as though some one has polished each bit by hand, it is divided into many areas, carpets, curtains, food, shoes, trinkets, and much more,to see everything on sale would take 2hrs or more, the aroma of spice assailing your nostrils, battling with the small of garlic from the vendors offering shish and doner kebabs.
Yalikalvak is 15mins by car, there is a very modern marina with gleaming yachts and trendy restaurants, the famous Windmill is here on the seafront, there is also an new amphitheatre, in summer look out for concerts being held there.
