Bodrum / Yalikavak area
Secluded and tranquil, Aegean Hills is only minutes away from the fashionable seaside village of Yalikavak and 5 minutes to the village of Gumusluk. Here, superb restaurants and boutique shops cater for every taste and the new marina promises to boost the region's reputation as a first class international sailing destination. Yalikavak is fast gaining the reputation as the St Tropez of the Aegean.
Yalikavak
Yalikvak is packed full of traditional charm yet lies only a 20 minute drive away from the centre of Bodrum town for those after a quieter alternative. As you drive towards Yalikavak you'll catch sight various pretty bays along the way including Tilkicik, Pasa and Yalikavak's own picturesque coast. Rows of windmills are dotted throughout the countryside adding to the appeal. Local life here is centred on the harbour, where you'll find impressive yachts moored up alongside simple fishing boats laden down with their latest catch. Of course there are also plenty of local restaurants specialising in fish and seafood dishes lined up by the harbour Side, as well as a great selection of Turkish dishes to choose from. Other local attractions include an interesting little art gallery showing the work of various local artists, plus there's a weekly market selling fresh produce and fashion. For further retail opportunities there are a few small shops you can stroll around where you're certain to find a couple of good souvenirs of your holiday. When you just want time to relax you can take it easy by stretching out on the beach. You'll find the beach a particularly picturesque place to be when the sun goes down, as this area is known for having really spectacular sunsets. Once the sun has disappeared below the horizon there are a couple bars you can visit but don't expect a thriving nightlife, you'll have to visit Bodrum town for that.
Gumusluk
The peaceful village of Gumusluk is one of the oldest settlements on the Bodrum peninsula. It stands on the site of the ancient Carian city of Myndus whose seafront sections slid into the sea in some long-forgotten earthquake. Today these remains are a magnet for snorkerlas, in 2006 one hundred archaeologists descended on Gumusluk to start excavating the land, so far they have uncovered further walls and mosaics.
Gümüslük. Gümüs is the Turkish word for Silver. Its not clear why Gümüslük is called by its name. Some locals say its due to the history of Mydus when the city used to be powerful enough to mine and mint its own silver coins. Its also been said that its due to the common sight of yakamoz (reflection of the moon on the water) turning the water in the bay a beautiful silver.
Today Gumusluk retains a small-scale, relaxed and magical atmospheree thanks to strictly enforced building prohibitions, designed to protect the ancient site. The charming flower-bedecked houses follow the curve of a small and pretty bay. Gumusluk is the perfect antidote for modern-day living, its a great place to unwind in an idyllic setting. The wonderful shelter of the bay provides a natural harbor for yachts and local fishing boats, the waterfront restaurants enjoy a reputation for excellent fresh fish amongst the Turks as far away as Istanbul. Gumusluk is famed amongst many famous Turkish actors, artists and musicians who frequent the bay during the summer months.
Rabbit Island separates the two well-sheltered bays of Gumusluk and is accessible by a partially sunken causeway. The Island offers a magnificent panorama of the bay, a glimpse of the famous rabbits scurrying around and for those of you feeling more adventurous, great rock jumping from the many rock formations!
Bodrum
Bodrum is a charming and fascinating port on the Aegean coast. The inhabitants of Bodrum are around 30.000 and earn their living by fishing, boat-building,agriculture, weaving (the village Mumcular is famous for its carpets, kilims and other weavings) and tourism, which has become the most important industry in the last few years. In recent times Bodrum has become not only a tourist centre but also a visiting place for famous Turkish and foreign artists and also an art centre, which is a source of inspiration. The heart of the town is around the harbor, where shops, bars and restaurants jostle together in the narrow streets under the shadow of the St. Peter Castle . The main artery is Cumhurriyet Caddesi (Republic Street), much better known as bar street. This street is a pedestrianized showcase of what the town has to offer. Skilled artisans can make you a pair of snugly fitting leather sandals in the traditional Aegean style, while small boutiques offer stylish creations inspired by local designs and fabrics.Shopping tips: mainstream Turkish Fashions (Gallery Emelce) are well represented to, with clothes designed for hot summer living . The souvenir shops sell attractive onyx, copper and brass ware, along with toy camels, and Gold harem slippers. Cafes and restaurants offer a cosmopolitan choice. To accompany your meal, try the light aniseed flavored national drink Raki or locally produced wine. After sundown, Bodrum lights up with flashing neon and laser shows to pulsating throb of the latest dance music. It's party time all over the town.
