ABOUT THE BODRUM PENINSULA

Bodrum has gained a deserved reputation as the centre of the Turkish art community with its lively, friendly and Bohemian atmosphere and many small galleries. This community has encouraged an informal day-time life style and a night-time of excitement. The evenings in Bodrum are for sitting idly in one of the many restaurants, dining on fresh seafood and other Aegean specialties. Afterwards night clubs (some with cabaret) and superb discos keep you going until dawn.

An impressive medieval castle built by the Knights of Rhodes guards the entrance to Bodrum's dazzling blue bay, in which the Aegean and the Mediterranean Seas meet. The town's charm is well-known throughout the world, attracting a diverse population of vacationers who stroll along its long palm-lined waterfront, while elegant yachts crowd the marina.

Not far from town, you can swim in absolutely clear, tideless, warm seas. Underwater divers, especially, will want to explore the numerous reefs, caves and majestic rock formations. The waters offer up multicolored sponges of all shapes and sizes, octopi and an immense variety of other aquatic life.

The reputation of Bodrum's boatyards dates back to ancient times, and today, craftsmen still build the traditional yachts: the Tirhandil with a pointed bow and stern, and the Gullets with a broad beam and rounded stern. The latter, especially, are used on excursions and pleasure trips, and in the annual October Cup Race.

Bodrum, known in ancient times as Halikarnas which was the capital of Caria, was the birthplace of Herodotus and the site of King Mausolou's Tomb (4th century B.C.), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In the harbor, the Bodrum Castle, or the medieval castle of St. Peter, is a fine example of 15th century crusader architecture, and has been converted into the Museum of Underwater Archeology, with remains dating as far back as the Bronze Age. The stunning panoramic view from Goktepe, nearby, is much photographed by visitors to the Museum's 2nd century theater.

The beautiful Bodrum Peninsula suits holidaymakers interested in a subdued and relaxing atmosphere. Enchanting villages, with guest-houses and small hotels on quiet bays, dot the peninsula. On the southern coast, Bardakci, Gümbet, Bitez, Ortakent, Karaincir, Bagla and Akyarlar have fine, sandy beaches. Campers and wind-surfers enjoy Gümbet, and at Bitez colorful sail boards weave skillfully among the masts of yachts in the bay. On shore you can enjoy quiet walks through the orange and tangerine groves bordering the beach. Ortakent has one of the longest stretches of sandy beach in the area and offers an ideal place for relaxing in solitude. One of the most beautiful beaches on the Bodrum peninsula, Karaincir, is ideal for lively active days by the sea and relaxed, leisurely evenings with local villagers. Finally, Akyarlar enjoys a well-deserved reputation for the fine, powdery sand of its beach, it's also considered as one of the best beaches in the world.

Turgutreis, Gumusluk and Yalikavak, all with excellent beaches, lie on the western side of the peninsula and are ideal for swimming, sunbathing and water sports. In Turgutreis, the birthplace of a great Turkish Ottoman admiral of the same name, you will find a monument honoring him. In the ancient port of Myndos, Gümüslük, you can easily make many friends with the hospitable and out-going local population. In Yalikavak white-washed houses with cascading Bougainville line narrow streets. Small cafes and the occasional windmill create a picturesque setting.

Activities on the Bodrum Peninsula

It could certainly be argued that the main reason people choose to holiday in Turkey is for the sunshine, beaches, water sports activities and lively nightlife - which is probably true - but there are so many other ways to enjoy yourself here on the Bodrum peninsula - listed below are 7 of our favourites:-

(2) Dedeman Aqua Park Bodrum

(3) Bodrum Castle and Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology

(4) Turgutreis Country Ranch

(5) Bodrum Oasis Centre

(6) Bodrum Golf Club

(7) Bazaar/(Market) Days

ABOUT YALIKAVAK

Yalikavak is 18 km from Bodrum, it is a neat and tidy village with the most beautiful panorama of the whole peninsula. The natural bay is extraordinary and charming. Due to the increased interest in property in Yalikavak, the once sleepy fishing village is growing into a major centre on the peninsula whilst still retaining its charm. It now boasts three major supermarkets, local clinics and a number of hotels open all year round offering cinema, jazz nights, yoga etc for both local residents and visitors. This part of the peninsula is also known for its clean air, crystal clear turquoise waters and amazing sunsets. A perfect marina complex operating throughout the year with all marina services available opened in Yalikavak two years ago.

Yalikavak is renowned for it's stunning sunsets, unspoilt shoreline and clear blue seas. It is ideal for sailing and water sports and attracts many foreign yachts to the marina. It is located just 10 miles from Bodrum town and used to be an old fishing village. The village is surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery on the Bodrum Peninsula. The relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect resort for those who want to experience authentic turkey, providing real local life at reasonable prices. Nearby Bodrum will more than fulfil your nightlife requirements with a wide array of shops, bars and clubs. It is only 10 minutes away by bus (dolmus).

Yalikavak now has a brand new 450 berth marina alongside its picturesque traditional harbour, the whole area is traffic free with much of it being lined with cobbled stone walk ways. The bay of Yalikava is the the considers the most elegant on the whole Bodrum peninsula. Next to the marina you will find a 2500 person capacity amphitheatre which hosts a number of concerts and other events throughout the season.

All the beaches along the peninsula are clean and the water crystal clear, there are several small beaches within walking distance of the apartment. Sun loungers and parasols that you can use are provided by near bybars. It is courteous to buy a drink if you a using the sun beds, this is very much a common arrangement on most beaches along the Bodrum peninsula. There is a good selection of restaurants and bars within a very short walking distance from the apartment, the atmosphere is very relaxed. The small harbour has good selection of traditional Turkish restaurants selling excellent fresh sea food, we usually manage to find a table on the edge of the harbour which proved for marvellous views during you meal. For snacks you can visit one of the several cafes in the small town centre. Where every you choose to dine you will find that the staff are very friendly and the service is excellent, with reasonable prices as well.
