The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The Bodrum Peninsula

Geographical Facts

Bodrum Peninsula is situated on the southwest coast of Turkey, in the eastern Aegean. The Peninsula extends 42 km in the E-W direction and 6km - 23.8 km in the N-S direction between the bays of Gulluk and Gokova. Covering an area of 649 km2 its highest elevation is measured as 690 m. The Bodrum Peninsula is surrounded by 32 islands and islets and forms a 174 km long coastline.

What is there to see?

Enchanting villages, dotted among small quiet bays and secluded coves typify the coast of the Bodrum Peninsula, which being blessed with a wide shoreline and gently lapped by both the warm Mediterranean and Aegean seas makes it a popular location to explore.

It’s a wild place of wonderful diversity, and the simplicity of the rural villages and inland hamlets contrast starkly with the bustling sophistication and cosmopolitan atmosphere of Bodrum itself. It is wonderful to discover that many parts of the peninsula are almost untouched by tourism and that country life continues at its own pace unmarred by the stresses and strains of the 21st century. Amongst the 150 or more beaches sprinkled along the coastline, there are still hidden, tranquil gems to be found and there is a whole treasure-trove of jewels to be discovered amongst the towns, villages, hamlets, harbours and marinas awaiting your delight around each bend.

Take the time to explore and you will be well rewarded. Visit Yalikavak , only 3 km away from our villas at Gundogan and well worth a visit. It is a picturesque, friendly town with lovely shops and restaurants around a pretty harbour and a new, international yachting marina for sailing enthusiasts. Open air concerts and films provide entertainment during the summer season. Also not to be missed are up-market Torba and Golturkbuku further along the north coast . They are stunningly beautiful locations, popular with the wealthy jet-set Turks who come to stay in their summer residences during the summer months.

Gumusluk, the site of ancient Myndos and now pretty and unspoilt is a real gem. It has good fish and seafood restaurants around its small bay and lovely views to distant islands. Visit Karakaya , too, an unusual hamlet on the mountainside above Gumusluk, where the views across the Aegean are breath-taking.

On the road to Turgutreis is Kadikalesi, a small beachside village with jetties off a small sandy beach. Turgutreis itself is a beautiful, well-cared for, busy town with good beaches and one of Europe’s largest marinas. It hosts the peninsula’s largest and best market on Saturdays. Don’t forget to haggle and enjoy the English catchphrases picked up by the local stallholders. In the summer months interesting boat excursions leave from here as well those from Bodrum.

From Akyarler you’ll get the best views of the Greek island Kos and enjoy a fine sandy beach and small harbour - popular with local families. Ortakent can be found inland - so built to protect the inhabitants from raiding pirates, whilst the nearby Camel Beach (at Kargi Bay) is one of the best on the peninsula. Bitez has a long beach where there are excellent watersports facilities and a promenade lined with a good variety of restaurants, all fringed with citrus and olive groves.

Gumbet is a busy, quite crowded beach town full of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops but with excellent and varied watersports and sea excursions available - not surprising really, given the proximity to the cosmopolitan, lively town of Bodrum itself.

East of Bodrum is quieter again and less touristy. Mumcular is surrounded by interesting carpet villages and the coastline boasts some more peaceful resorts after the bustling surrounds of Bodrum and Gumbet. Yaliciftlik offers great restaurants and Mazi has lovely sea views from its sandy beach.

Days Out and Special Interests

In ancient times Selcuk and Ephesus were important religious centres and the early rulers of western Anatolia built magnificent shrines in honour of their gods. In the second century BC the Romans established their eastern capital at Ephesus and in the first century AD the city became one of the most important centres of early Christianity. On the outskirts of Selcuk heading towards Ephesus you’ll find the remains of the temple of Artemis, once one of the seven wonders of the world. Today Ephesus is the best preserved classical city in the Mediterranean. Things to see within the city of Ephesus include the marble Arcadian Way, the Old Harbour (silted up for centuries), the centrepiece Grand Theatre with a seating capacity of 25,000, the lower Agora, the Celcius Library, Temple of Serapis, the Curetes Way, the Temple of Hadrian, the Trajan Fountain and the upper Agora. Nearby, but outside the city itself are the Gymnasium of Vedius, the Church of the Virgin Mary and Meryemana, often referred to as the House of the Virgin Mary, where Mary is reputed to have spent her last days.

Pamukkale, meaning “cotton castle” is one of Turkey’s prettiest and most dramatic natural sites. For thousands of years water flowing from its springs has cascaded down the mountainside on which the town is built, leaving a build-up of calcium on the rock-face, resulting in the incredible formation of dazzling white pools, made of petrified calcium, which overflow with warm water and brilliant stalactites. Nearby are the Roman ruins of Hierapolis , most impressive of which are the City Baths, Grand Theatre and the Necropolis, comprising more than 1000 tombs.

Within travelling distance is the famous site of Aphrodisias, south-west of Pamukkale. Today it is one of Turkey’s most important archaeological sites and excavations include the magnificent Temple of Aphrodite, the Stadium with seating for 30,000, the Bishops’ Palace, Hadrian’s Bath, a crumbling agora and an ancient Odeon.

Priene, Miletus and Didyma are three of Turkey’s finest archaeological sites and have been closely linked throughout history.

Priene’s sights include the Bouleterion, the ancient theatre seating 5,000 and still much intact, the Temple of Athena and, lower down, a Byzantine Church.

Miletus is to be found 14 miles south of Priene and boasts a theatre originally built in Hellenic times and later rebuilt by the Romans to seat 15,ooo. Its upper terraces give a glorious view of the site. Other attractions are the Faustina Baths and Ilyas Bey Camii, a 15thC mosque.

Didyma is to be found another 14 miles south and is the site of the magnificent Temple of Apollo. Didyma was built as a sacred sanctuary for priests and the Temple there is probably the world’s best-preserved example of ancient temple architecture, the sheer size of the structure being awesome.

Closer to hand is Milas , one of Turkey’s oldest towns. In early Hellenic times it was the capital of the kingdom of Caria, which encompassed the whole of south-western Anatolia. The main attractions are Gumuskesen Turbe, a Roman burial chamber, the ruins of a Roman temple and three 14thC mosques. Today Milas is noted for its beautiful hand-woven carpets. Nearby is the beautiful Lake Bafa and the pretty beach resort of Gulluck, which is noted for its attractive beach and glorious hilltop view of Bodrum.

Dalyan is worth a visit to see the Lycian rock tombs, visit the ruins of ancient Caunos and perhaps even sample the mud baths or swim at Turtle Beach.

Excursions to the Greek island of Kos are possible from Bodrum and Turgutreis and there is a ferry from Bodrum to the beautiful Datcha peninsula.

Bodrum / Gundogan area

Things to Do

Do as much or as little as you like of course - that is the beauty of a holiday at our villas - no schedules, no timetable or set meal times to stick to. Here are a few suggestions to get you going though, and we are sure you’ll find many more of you own to add to these.

Relax around the pool, on the terraces at the villas or on the beach. Remember to bring your beach towels! Follow a lazy day in the sun with a barbecue, with fresh local produce and mouth-watering delicious salad vegetables and a cool glass of wine or local beer.

The walk to Kucukbuk beach is only 5 - 10 minutes and to Gundogan 15 - 20 minutes (less than 5 minutes by car of course) - or pick up the local dolmus on the main road outside the villas and go exploring. From Gundogan you can take one into Bodrum central bus station and from there the whole peninsula is your oyster. They are cheap, clean and efficient, run regularly and are a fun way to get about.

We recommend you hire a car for at least some of your stay, to explore further afield. Bodrum is a must, of course. Stroll along the waterfront, see the imposing Crusader castle and marina, shop and haggle and enjoy the hustle and bustle. Perhaps visit the large aqua park nearby.

Visit some of the 150 beaches on the peninsula during the day and stay on into the evening to sample a cooling drink or a meal at a waterside restaurant. Local restaurants offer lovely, freshly cooked food and you can make a choice of your own meze from the kitchen, followed by local, freshly caught fish or try scrumptious, marinated chicken accompanied by one of the many varieties of salads available - usually offered free with your meal, along with delicious crusty bread. In the summer months the road alongside the famous fish restaurants in Gundogan is closed to traffic and the tables and chairs spill out onto the street and beach!

Head for Gumusluk late afternoon and watch the sunset - or enjoy a drink or meal on the jetty at Boncuk in Gundogan bay. Visit the new marina at Yalikavak and sample a drink at the newly restored windmill.

Don’t forget to visit the markets - they are really amazing and the stall holders love to haggle, joke and test out their English catch-phrases. So, join in the spirit and enjoy the experience. Market days are listed under the respective towns but Milas, the regional capital, and Turgutreis are particularly good.

Take one of the boat trips on offer around the bays and islands around the peninsula. Day trips are available from Bodrum and Yalikavak and traditional wooden gulets are also available to hire. We have contact details for both, if you wish.

Further afield visit the Lycian rock tombs at Dalyan and see the ancient ruins of Caunos. If you have the time visit the Greco-Roman ruins at Ephesus. Well worth it if you can make it and an absolute favourite place , being probably the best-preserved classical ruins in the Mediterranean.

You can even take a day trip to Kos, from Bodrum or Turgutreis - or more locally paddle over to Rabbit Island from Gumusluk, where in several places you can see remnants of ancient Myndos, which slipped into the sea.

If you are in need of some more relaxation after all this, make sure you have a hammam (Turkish bath) and you will feel wonderfully calm, clean and relaxed. A visit to the barber is also recommended for the men - including a shave, haircut, hot towels and neck and shoulder massage. For the ladies, the massages, manicures and pedicures are wonderful and great value too.

The peninsula also offers other opportunities for walking, cycling, horse-riding, more sight-seeing and of course shopping - think Turkish carpets, jewellery, leather articles and clothes, and cotton goods.

Add to these your own discoveries and you will see that there is plenty to do and see - or if you really just want to chill out, relax and unwind, there is no need at all to venture very far at all, because everything you need is just on your doorstep.

How to get there

Direct charter flights to Bodrum are available from April to October from about £99 to £250 return (check FlyThomas Cook, Thomsonfly, XL, OnurAir) and through Travel4U in the winter months, and are much the best route, taking only three and a half hours in total.

Off season, one alternative is to travel to Izmir with British Airways who fly from Gatwick from £40 one way. The drive from Izmir is lovely and takes about 3 hours. Another option is to fly to Istanbul (either scheduled or with Easyjet) and take an internal low-cost flight from there. Pegasus also offer flights to istanbul.

Transfer from the airport takes 30 - 45 minutes and costs about £40. Car hire is available from £15/20 per day depending on car and length of booking. We can advise or help with this at the time of booking.

"it will be very nice to stay in the villa again this summer me and my family are really looking forward to stay there.
Thanks"

'Me and my girlfriend would like to thank you for the lovely time we had when we hired your villa back in September'

'Just a little note to say thank you again. We really had a fantastic holiday and we would certainly love to go again. The villa itself is actually better than the pictures and description, and so lovely to arrive to have food in the fridge. We did lots of things you suggested and also got a ferry from Bodrum to Black Fig Beach. That was great lazing about on all those brightly coloured cushions. Back home now and with just the photos and happy memories of a lovely holiday'

'Your home is very lovely and beautiful. We definitely want to book again for next year'

'You have made such an effort to make sure everything is lovely and perfect'.
