The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

From the historic cities of Troy and Ephesus, on through the many layers of its ancient archaeological past, Turkey is without-doubt, one of the world's most interesting and well-traveled destinations.

Add to that history lesson some of the finest white sand beaches anywhere, fishing and scuba diving venues, beautiful national parks, resorts, outstanding food, hilltop castles, golden mosques, exotic shopping bazaars, stunning mountain scenery that almost defies description, and now, a much-improved transportation system.

Turkey's Mediterranean shore, called the Turquoise Coast, is nearly 1600 km (994 miles) long, scattered with fine-sand beaches and sprinkled abundantly with classical cities turned to picturesque ruins.

The Turquoise Coast is the first place to think of when you're considering a seaside vacation in Turkey. It has more and better beaches and resorts than does the Aegean coast, and warmer, saltier water than the Black Sea coast.

Whether you consider Bodrum the south end of the Aegean or the west end of the Mediterranean, it is still Turkey's foremost chic seaside resort, with two perfect bays framing a noble crusader castle, and the flashiest discos in the land.
Turkey is a fantastic place to visit ! It offers excellent value for money , delicious food (catering very well for both meat and fish lovers and also vegetarians), great outdoor markets where you can purchase clothing ,jewellery, leather goods, rugs, linen all at reasonable prices .

Bodrum / Gumusluk Village area

The Bodrum Peninsula
Explore the magnificent Bodrum peninsula town by town...

Gumusluk
Gumusluk is one of the oldest settlement areas on the Bodrum peninsula. Her mother nature has been kind. Within the quaint fishing village of Gumusluk there are a number of excellent fish restaurants with beautiful views of the sea and the local island called Rabbit island. (it takes it name from the the rabbits that inhabit it). Whilest wandering accross the seas to the island at low tide it is possible to see the ancient ruins of Myndos. The principal reason for this is that part of the area covered by Gümüslük is the site of the ancient city of Myndos a Lelege town founded 5,000 years ago. This ruling even extends to diving with tanks in the waters around the village, protecting the sunken remnants of ancient times; however, you can snorkel and still catch remarkable views of old city walls and the harbor breakwater by exploring straight from the bay just to the northeast of the village. There is still apparently a great deal of excavation still to be undertaken. Myndos has been the scene of some momentous events in history.

Yalikavak
Nearby is the exciting and modern village of Yalikavak which has a brand new marina. There are a large number of excellent restaurants catering to all different tastes.Yalikavak is located on the north side of the Bodrum peninsula, 18 km from Bodrum. It was originally the seaport for the hillside village of Sandima but in recent years, the inhabitants moved from the village to the seaside, providing Yalikavak with sufficient population to become a municipality.Windmills are one of the symbols of Yalikavak. When you arrive at the location where the windmills stand you will immediately realize that the heat which followed you up there has quit its long chase. Stand beside the windmills and take a look at the horizon, you will witness completely green scenery on one side, stretching up to Ortakent, where if winks at the bright blue sea

Further afield are a number of other villages and of course the nightlife of Bodrum and Gymbet which can all be visited by car, taxi , or the excellent and very reasonable domus. In high season the domus runs all night.

Bodrum
Situated on a beautiful peninsula, Bodrum, home of the famous Greek historian Herodotus, is these days better known as a popular holiday resort. Enchanting villages of houses painted in white and trimmed with purple bougainvillea together with miles of sandy beaches and ideal locations for water sports. The boatyards of Bodrum have been famous since ancient times and today the craftsmen still make the traditional types of yacht: the pointed bow and stern (tirhandil) and the broad beamed and rounded stern (gulette). The latter, especially, is used for excursions and pleasure trips

Gumbet
Gümbet is only 2-3 km away from Bodrum and is named after Kümbet - these white domed cisterns in this area. The resort used to be a sleepy little village, but that's in the past, as the resort is now nearly as busy as its big sister, Bodrum. It does however retain some charm of its own, together with the added benefit of a great beach: Gümbet has a long beach curving around a bay, the sandy beach is undoubtedly a great attraction, but it's the combination of the sea, sun, sand and fun that makes Gümbet so popular. It is a holiday resort created to provide the usual facilities expected from a beach holiday, so the beach is within an easy walk from most hotels and the central area, the coastal waters are warm, clean, narrow, crystal clear and teaming with small fish and the like, ideal for families with young children

Gundogan
Gündoğan is a fishermen’s place with its fully sand beach, very clean sea and its greenery. The fishermen’s shelter where the fishing boats and yachts anchor adds colour to the shore. In recent years the summer holiday house owners have also moved to this village area. However, thankfully they have not touched the houses surrounded with trees of olive, mandarins, bananas, pomegranates and oak. The old and new settlers have protected the character of the place. Set against magnificent mountain scenery just east of Yalikavak is the secluded, peaceful village of Gündoğan.

Weather
Turkey has all 4 seasons but with a much warmer climate than most European countries like the UK. In winter, you'll find the temperatures by the south coast ranging between 5 and 15 degrees, in spring it warms up to 25 degrees. The summer is usually dry and hot from May through to September peaking at 45 degrees, cooling again as we move into autumn back down from 25 to 15 degrees.

The popular resort of Bodrum, called Halicarnassos in ancient times, is the South Aegean’s most attractive resort, described by Homer as ‘The land of eternal blue’.
