The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Lying 270 km south of Izmir, on the Aegean Coast, Bodrum is one of Turkey's leading resorts. Encompassing two half-moon bays, region is a long-standing favourite amongst the Turkish upper classes. With its multitude of hotels, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs, the area draws thousands of foreign visitors too. What makes the Bodrum area so especially appealing as a holiday resort is that in addition to its many recreational and sporting offerings, its periphery is made up of even more beaches, bays and villages. The possibilities for exploration - and satisfaction - are endless.
Originally called Halicarnassus, Bodrum was founded around 1000 BC, and was one of the first Greek colonies in Asia. Bodrum reached its prime under King Mausolus, who governed from 377 BC to 383 BC. He was succeeded by his wife, Artemisia, who ordered the construction of a commemorative white marble tomb for Mausolus. (The origin of the modern English word, "mausoleum", is pretty obvious!). The creation appeared on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World list. Crowned with an intimidating statue of Mausolus and Artemisia riding a chariot, the tomb has since been dismantled, although the site may be visited.
The summer months (May to October) are consistently sunny and dry with virtually no humidity. Temperatures peak at 34 degrees Celcius. Summer sea water temperatures range between 18 and 25 degrees Celcius, making all manner of water activity most inviting. Winters are mild and untouched by frost or snow. The Turkish word for autumn - Sonbahar ("second spring") - says it all. The generally pleasant winters give Bodrum a significant flexibility: those who prefer more subdued holidays can get maximum enjoyment from all the region's offerings in low season.
The Bodrum area
Located on the Western coast of Turkey, the peninsula of Bodrum lies in the blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Originally known as the famous city of Halicarnassos, it has been home to many civilisations and to the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today Bodrum is better known as a hot spot for the local 'jet-set' including pop stars, actors and those who like to cruise into the fabulous marina or the beautiful bays throughout the peninsula. Bodrum also attracts many tourist who love it for its nightlife, beaches and shopping as well as its ideal location for visiting ancient historical sites. Sailing and windsurfing are also popular pastimes and Bodrum hosts an annual Regatta. Bodrum is one of the most popular and cosmopolitan resorts in Turkey.
Whether you want to eat or shop, Bodrum has something to offer all. A wide choice of restaurants catered to all tastes from traditional Turkish food to Far Eastern delicacies to a variety of European cuisine. Shops range from designer label outlets to small bazaar and gift stores. Twice a week there is a market in Bodrum. Besides of its being an attractive touristic fame, Bodrum is also available with direct flights between May and October.
Bodrum cuisine reflects a rich intermingling of east and west, past and present. Vegetables are highly prized, and much care is given to their preparation. They will be found raw, fried and roasted. Favourite vegetable "dressings" are yoghurt and olive oil. Pure vegetable dishes are common, but they are also encountered filled with warm mince-meat and rice. The most common meats are lamb, beef and chicken. Pork is forbidden to the practicing Moslems, and fish is available and can be cheap or very expensive. It pays to shop around. The most popular alcoholic beverage is "Raki", an "anisette" that clouds when diluted with water. Commonly known as "Aslan sut" ("lion milk"), Raki is the perfect accompaniment to every course.
