Home description
Villa Anne-Marie, in the lovely village of Yalikavak, well known for its windmills and sponge diving, is situated on the Bodrum Peninsula. The villa is surrounded by exotic gardens and with a beautiful pool. From parts of the villa and especially the roof terrace there are lovely sea, hill and pool views. Apart from the magnificent views from the roof terrace, there are sunloungers, a good sized table, benches and lighting - making it a lovely place to dine and from here you can view wonderful sunsets over the sea! Sea-Med Palms is a gated community of 14 villas and is often referred to as the premier complex in Yalikavak with many holiday makers returning there year after year.
The Villa
The detached villa has a lounge, kitchen/dining area, large outside dining terrace, a downstairs washroom with normal sized sink, two bedrooms and a bathroom with shower over the bath. The master bedroom has a king sized bed with a large wardrobe, chests of drawers etc. The other furnished bedroom has twin beds, but it's possible to attach both beds together to becomes a 6 ft wide bed should you want this. Both bedrooms have balconies. There are insect screens on most of the windows and the villa is fully central heated in case it gets chilly in the winter months. Both bedrooms, the lounge and kitchen/dining area all have air conditioning. Should it be needed there is a single thick mattressed folding bed which can be placed in one of the bedrooms or the lounge at night time. The lounge has a 2-seater sofa, a 3-seater sofa and a single chair. It has a TV/DVD with basic satellite programmes in English (Sky News etc) and a CD/cassette/radio unit.
Yalikavak is an upmarket area often called the St. Tropez of Turkey and where many Turkish Celebraties as well as Europeans holiday. It is about a 10 minutes walk to the sea front where there are a miriad of restaurants overlooking the bay. The main beach is another 5 minutes further in the midst of boutique hotels and restaurants and where holidaymakers enjoy watching the well known Yalikavak sunsets. 20 minutes away by car is beautiful Bodrum Harbour, with its focal point of St Peters Castle, and from here you can take a ferry to Kos and Rhodes in Greece or visit the many ancient Roman, Greek, Byzantian and Ottoman sites that abound in this part of Turkey. The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Description of the Area
On the Bodrum Peninsula buildings are not permitted to be built more than 2 stories high, and there are no buildings higher than 3 stories in the whole peninsula. This tends to make the area look particularly attractive. Most of the buildings are of a greek style as at one time this area had a large Greek community. The area if full of pretty low rise whitewashed buildings adorned with colourful bourgainvillaea cascading over the side of the houses. They are distintive to this area of Turkey only and the locals call them sugar cube houses. Palm trees, oleanders, and tropical style plants are in abundance throughout the local area. Most views have hills/mountains in the background. Frequently they are covered with green pine forests and as you look out towards the sea you will see a myriad of islands and enchanting bays.
Local Climate
Yalikavak always has a cool breeze in the height of summer and, because of this, there are fewer insects in this area as they do not like the wind. This cooling breeze is also very welcome in the hotter months. You are almost guaranteed sunshine from May through to the end of September and April and October time are often like a pleasant English summer's day. The winters are extremely mild in this region. Whilst several restaurants and bars stay open throughout the year in Yalikavak, and especially now that many Europeans have retired here, Bodrum remains a lively place to visit even out of season.
History and Archaeology
Turkey is the proud possessor of more recognized historical and archaeological sites than any other country in the world. Bodrum's Aegean location offers the opportunity to see many of the best. From the spectacular ancient city of Ephesus or the unique Temple of Apollo at Didyma to quaint and secluded Iasus, a two thousand-year trip into the past is only a few hours away. Travelling by organized tour, rent-a-car or public bus, numerous spectacular sites are close enough to be visited easily in a day. Bodrum's own history is second to none. Birth place of Heredotus (the "Father of History"); home of Mausolus, entombed in one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; and visited by Alexander The Great (who enjoyed a lengthy stay), Bodrum is a unique combination of ancient and modern. Sites not to be missed in Bodrum itself include the Mausoleum, the amphitheater on the hill above town and the early fifteenth century Castle of St. Peter which also houses a world famous museum of underwater archaeology. As a place where people have lived continuously for thousands of years Bodrum has an incredibly rich past. Its position in or near so many of the great civilizations and events of ancient history also makes Halicarnassus (Bodrum's ancient name) an important site for history lovers.
Bodrum / Yalikavak area
Yalikavak
Yalikavak is a old fishing and sponge diving village but at the same time has become a relatively new resort on the north west coast of the Bodrum peninsula. It has an impressive new marina complex with some very nice shops and cafe/bars, there is also a new amphitheater that holds regular shows and concerts during the summer. The town has a good selection of shops in the main bazaar area and the old harbour is lined with fish restaurants. The beach is long and is looked over by a variety of cafes and bars. Although it does not have the frantic night life of Bodrum, there is a pleasant buzz around.
From the Villa it is between 10 and 15 minutes walk to the sea front where there are umpteen restaurants overlooking the bay. Here fishing boats and traditional Turkish gulets moor side by side. Yalikavak's beach is in the midst of restaurants and small boutique hotels. Several of them put out loungers on the beach which they are happy for you to use - all for the price of a drink! Turkish restaurants are normally excellent and reasonably priced. Some have an very good reputation for their fish dishes. The Turkish people are extremely friendly and welcoming and it is easy to make some new friends here. People working in and around the restaurants generally speak some English. There are also many shops in Yalikavak, several along by the seafront, but the majority are situated nearby, between the Mosque and Council Offices. There is a very popular market held in Yalikavak near here all day on Thursday.
There are many boats trips from the sea front at Yalikavak taking you for the day to the various bays or islands and sometimes it will pull in to the charming fishing village of Gumusluk. Often the captain, within reason, will take you wherever you fancy. Normally you will be taken in a traditional Turkish gulet, these are attractive boats to look at, and the trips normally include meals, drinks, and snacks. Prices start around £11 which is very reasonable.
Assorted types of water sports are available in the area including diving. In the Kudur area of Yalikavak there is a beach club called the Xuma Beach Club. It is quite exclusive and there is an entry charge. There is a mixture of water sports offered here and they hire out Jet Skis. The Beach Club includes restaurants and bars and it is very popular.
At some of the shops in Yalikavak you are able to arrange excursions to places well known such as Ephesus, Pumukkale and Capodecia. Or perhaps you might like to have a Turkish or Mud bath, or even a Turkish evening with belly dancing. It's all on offer here. Several excursions are by coach and some may involve staying a night at a Hotel.
Bodrum
Bodrum is a stylish, cosmopolitan, upmarket area with a myriad of luxurious yachts and numerous gullets sitting around its harbour. It has an abundance of shops, restaurants and bars, notably around the sea front area. By the Marina's entrance there are the more exclusive designer shops. You may have heard of the well known, outdoors night club called Halikinarsos, said to be the largest in the Mediterranean, which is in Bodrum. This is very popular. There are several other night clubs in Bodrum, one of them based on a catamaran moored there. It is quite lively here at night wheras Yalikavak is quieter. As you go towards Bodrum coming from Yalikavak, you will see on your right a large waterpark. It looks like great fun for the kids! From Bordum Harbour you can get a ferry to the Greek Islands off Kos and Rhodes as they are very nearby, in fact you can see them from many parts of the Bodrum Peninsula. You can also arrange for trips to Cappodocia, Pumlakale and Ephesus as well as various boats and scuba diving trips. Most of these trips are very reasonable. Bodrum is only about 20 minutes drive from Yalikavak. If you have chosen not to hire a car, it is easy to hop on a Dolmus - this is a very cheap turquoise coloured minibus. There is a Dolmus Station in the general shopping area in Yalikavak.
Other Local Places to See
There are many other interesting seaside places and inland ancient villages to visit on the Bodrum Peninsula. Torba is very green, surrounded by pine forests and has an especially beautiful bay. Just a few steps from Gumusluk's seafront is the ancient underwater city of Mindos (be aware that it is not permitted to remove any relics that you find here). You could also wade across to Rabbit Island to see the rabbits! Gumusluk is known for its excellent fish restaurants. Turgetreis is quite a lively place, with a large sandy beach and many shops and restaurants. Turkbuku is also lovely and known as a place where the wealthy Turks holiday. Then again there's Gundogan, another seaside resort with restaurants, bars and another lovely beach. There are many more places to visit than these, if you want to see them all it is best to hire a car and just meander along the coastal roads and take in the views!

We mention this in case it could cause difficulties, but there are passages down each side of the complex that are easier to manage. As you go down this road towards the sea there are several other shops and another general store on the corner which again opens 24 hours a day. Please ask about this and we will do our best to accomodate you. If you especially want to book up a flight that is not Monday to Monday (perhaps you have found a very good offer) then if we can't help you, we could also try and arrange for a local boutique hotel for a night or two. They are often very reasonable.
