Home description

Villa Oya is a detached and spacious 3 bedroom villa set amongst the olive trees and tangerine groves of the idyllic Bodrum Peninsula, some 15 kilometres from Bodrum itself and 2 kilometres from the beach and picturesque fishing village of Gumusluk. The villa is situated in the Gumusluk Valley, in quiet and beautiful countryside, on the edge of a rural hamlet. The Aegean Sea sparkles in the distance.

The villa is built to a high standard in traditional style and with all modern comforts. It has a private pool and garden, and sleeps up to 6. The villa is is perfect for families and couples. Villa Oya is located next to Villa Ata (owned by my brother and his wife) so for larger groups or two families holidaying together both villas can be booked. It is well-furnished throughout with spacious living areas, terrace and balconies providing views of the surrounding countryside, mountains and sea. The villa overlooks fields and olive, tangerine and lemon groves.

The villa has a slightly elevated position which ensures that even on the hottest of days it benefits from gentle and cooling breezes. Add this to wonderful sunsets and starry skies and you have a tranquil and picturesque setting, perfect for a relaxing and carefree holiday.

The villa offers an excellent base, whether you want simply to relax by the pool, enjoy Gumusluk and the surrounding coastline, explore the inland villages or venture into the hustle and bustle of Bodrum, with its Crusader castle, marina and plethora of shops, bars and cosmopolitan cafes.

The local regular bus service (dolmus) stops 5 minutes walk away from the villa. This gives easy access to Bodrum and the rest of the peninsula. The villa has a private car parking space. We would recommend that you hire a car in order to experience all that the area has to offer. However, if you simply want to relax around the villa and pool, with occasional trips to Gumusluk, Bodrum and elsewhere, then the dolmus (and perhaps a taxi from time to time) will be all that you need.

The nearest minimarket for fresh bread, groceries is a 5 minute walk away. There are large supermarkets at Turgetreis and Ortakent (both about 8 kilometes away).

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The craggy Bodrum Peninsula is an area of wonderful diversity, where the simplicity of the villages of the rural hinterland jostles with the sophistication and energy of Bodrum itself. Given Bodrum’s unabated popularity, it comes as a surprise to find many parts of the peninsula almost untouched by tourism. There are still villages where donkeys are used to carry firewood for the traditional bee-hived shaped ovens in which unleavened bread (‘pide’) is cooked, and where elderly men seem to spend most of the day playing backgammon. Amongst the dozens of beaches along the coastline, quiet and unspoilt backwaters with hidden bays and coves and aquamarine waters can still be found.

Bodrum / Gumusluk Village area

Things To Do ?
Where to start.......?

The beauty of a holiday at Villa Oya is that you can do as much or as little as you like.......

Long days by the pool, followed by barbecues garnished with tomatoes, peppers, rocket and other fresh local produce.

Sit on the balcony, watch the sun drop down into the Aegean - stay long enough for a beer or glass of wine or two and gaze at the countless stars in the clear Turkish sky.

Head for Gumusluk in late afternoon - a cooling drink at the Bati bar followed perhaps by a meal at one of the many waterside restaurants. Try the cool jazz sounds of Gumuscafe at the water’s edge....and sunsets to die for.....

Pop over to Yalikavak - stroll through the shops, have a coffee or beer at the newly restored windmill, watch the sun go down (again!) and perhaps finish off at the weekly open-air cinema at the marina.

Visit some of the numerous beaches on the peninsula - Akyarlar perhaps or Camel Beach, or drive a little further and visit the carpet village in the hills on route to Yaliciftlik, where you can eat and swim later.

Further afield, drive over the mountains to Dalyan - see the Lycian rock tombs, visit the ruins of ancient Caunos, sunbathe on Iztuzu beach where the endangered Mediterranean turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. Finish your day with a visit to the mud baths

Nearer to home, visit the large aquapark on the road into Bodrum.

Head for the weekly market at Milas, the regional capital about an hour’s drive away - see foods, spices, and trinkets being sold. Alternatively if you just want designer gear at non-designer prices visit the Saturday market at nearby Turgetreis.

Visit Bodrum - shop and haggle a little and then walk along the waterfront enjoying the hustle and bustle centred around the dozens of wooden sailing gulets moored overnight. Head for a pizza at Sunger, and maybe a sundowner overlooking the marina. And if you have the energy or inclination - Bodrum rocks at night, whether at the famous Halikarnas disco or in numerous restaurants and bars.

Have a day abroad - go by hydrofoil or ferry to the Greek island of Kos - from Bodrum or Turgutreis

Take your shoes off to paddle across the causeway onto Rabbit Island at Gumusluk. Look into the clear waters around the small harbour - in several places you can see remnants of the ancient city of Myndos, which slipped into the sea in ancient times. Alexander the Great made an unsuccessful attempt to capture Myndos in 334 BC whilst on his way to sack Halicarnassus (Bodrum). This is also the sheltered anchorage where Cassius is reputed to have fled to in 43 BC following the murder of Julius Caesar.

Have a relaxing few hours in an ‘hamam’ (Turkish bath)....and those of the grizzlier sex, treat yourself to a haircut and shave whilst in Turkey, which will include cut-throat razors, singeing, various lotions and a head and neck massage - marvellous!

Make an early start and visit the Greco-Roman ruins at Ephesus, about two and a half hours away. This was once a city of 250,000 people. These are probably the best-preserved classical ruins in the Mediterranean. On the way back, visit the beautiful hilltop village of Sirence with it’s wooden houses set amongst vineyards and peach trees.

Take a boat for a day and visit some of the bays and islands dotted around the peninsula. Day trips are readily available from Bodrum, Yalikavak and elsewhere. Alternatively hire a traditional wooden gulet and captain for a couple of days or longer, and sail the Aegean - we can arrange if need be.

Walk in the local countryside. Make sure you go up to Karakaya at some stage and gaze at the islands dotted like jewels in the Aegean. Another great walk is from Yalikavak up to the deserted village of Sandima high in the hills. Or you could simply walk from the villas through country lanes to the beach at Kadikalesi, about half an hour away.
This is a lovely house in a wonderful area - we want you to enjoy it as much as we do. If you need any more information, don't hesitate to contact us.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Annette and Kadri Acik

The villa is located about 55 kilometres from Bodrum Airport. The drive takes 50 minutes or so, and is very scenic and a wonderful introduction to Turkey. It includes a long stretch along the coast, stunning views of Bodrum and the Crusader castle and finally glimpses of a bygone Turkey as you climb the hills that form the spine of the peninsula and make your way towards Gumusluk. Flights from the UK take about 3½ hours. You are usually out of the airport in less than 30 minutes - don’t forget £10 in sterling per person for a visa which you obtain at the airport. You will also need a full UK passport with 6 months validity.

We can arrange for you to be met and conveyed to the villa by taxi (approximately £35). Alternatively you may wish to hire a car at the airport - if you so wish, we can make the arrangements with a reputable local company at discounted rates.

Charter flights to Bodrum are available from April until October and range from about £70 to £250 return. An alternative (particularly off-season) is to travel to Izmir with British Airways who fly from Gatwick four times a week. Flights start at around £160 return. The drive from Izmir is scenic and takes about 3 hours. BA also fly from Gatwick to Dalaman, again a scenic 3 hour drive - flights start at around £120 return.

Another option is to add a few days in Istanbul to your holiday, either flying scheduled or with Easyjet. Onward flights to Bodrum take an hour, and are available with several low-cost airlines or with Turkish Airlines. We can assist with advice about flights or hotels for all the above options.
