The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Turkeys Aegean Coast is dotted with golden shingle shores, wild green hills and rugged mountains. Offering cosmopolitan resorts, historic treasures and natural beauty; it has all the ingredients for an unforgettable holiday. Turkey is one place to which the phrase "East meets West" really applies. Although 97% of Turkey's landmass is in Asia, Turkey began facing West politically in 1923, when Atatürk founded the modern republic. He transformed the remnants of the shattered Ottoman Empire into a secular state with a Western outlook. The legacies of the Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, and numerous other civilizations have made Turkey a vast outdoor museum. The most spectacular of the reconstructed classical sites are along the Aegean Coast, stretching from the northern border with Greece south to Bodrum. The treasures include the 3,000-year-old ruins of Troy, made famous by the poet Homer; the ruins of the fabled city of Pergamum, on its windswept hilltop; and the magnificent temples, colonnaded streets, and theater in Ephesus. The Aegean Coast also lures travelers with long stretches of magnificent sandy beaches. Its pine-clad hills are punctuated by old port villages -- Foça, Çesme, Kusadasi, Bodrum -- some reincarnated as modern resorts with sophisticated facilities for travellers.
Bodrum / Turgutreis area
Turgutreis is located approximately 20 minutes from Bodrum and nestled at the end of the Bodrum Peninsula provides some of the most fantastic sun-sets in the world. The second largest town on the Bodrum peninsula, Turgutreis provides the visitor with a glimpse of real Turkish life combined with sufficient recreational amenities for everyone.
There are several ways to explore the peninsula, the most enjoyable of which are to visit several of the bays andseaside villages mentioned via one of the daily boat trips available from Turgureis harbour. You may also take a boat trip to the Greek island of Kos Less than 30 minutes from Turgutreis.
The other is to take the Dolmus, the local mini buses. Dolmus await the passenger for every destination at the bus station on the main road out of town. Destinations are clearly displayed on each vehicle and all one does is take a seat and wait for the bus to fill. It will cost approx 2.5 YTL for a trip.
It is difficult to find cleaner, clearer water than that on the Turkish coast. No matter where you go, visibility is always excellent. This combined with an absence of heavy seas or strong tides and currents make the Bodrum area a swimmer's and snorkeler's paradise. For those interested in spending more time underwater than one breath there are several scuba diving centres in the area offering instruction and equipment hire, for the beginner or expert. Recently declared one of the world's best windsurfing areas by a popular windsurfing magazine, you are never far from a board anywhere on the peninsula. Windsurf schools and rental facilities abound, particularly in Gümbet and Bitez. If you're after speed and thrills of a different kind, water-skiing, jet skiing and parasailing are also available on several beaches.
Shopping is plentiful in the many many bazars, jewellers and boutiques which line the streets of every town on the penninsula. The Oasis Centre can be found about 20 minutes away on the road to Bodrum and is a modern shopping mall with many eateries and bars. There is also a waterpark approximately 15 minutes away.
Turgutreis is named after the great Turkish Admiral of the same name who was born here in the 16th century. Known in the west as Dragut, Turgutreis is primarily known for his participation in the Ottoman siege of Malta. A few kilometers outside of town a waterfront memorial marks the place where he first set sail. Today the town bearing the great admiral's name is a centre for commerce on the western side of the peninsula. Produce from the surrounding villages is collected here for transport, bakeries, shops and services flourish. For the more recreational minded, Turgutreis features sandy beaches, a luxurious new marina, excellent fish restaurants and bars all with a special Turkish flavour. Of course no visit to Turgutreis would be complete without a trip to the Saturday Market, the Peninsulas biggest takes place every Saturday.
