Lesser known Graeco Roman sites such as Iassos, Gumusluk, are within half an hour and the delightful harbour villages of Yalikavak and Gudogan are 5 minutes away. Bodrum with its Crusader castle and sugar cube houses and windy streets is a fifteen minute hop by car, plenty of public transport too, which uses Bodrum as a hub. Plenty of history and plenty of good scenery and both lively and quiet beaches around. Unspoiled Countryside with scatterings of ruins amongst the cows and donkeys in Mumcular and Kizilagac.
Greek islands, such as Kos, Samos and Leros a short ferry ride away.
Gokcebel is quiet and almost exactly as it has always been for the past 200 years. Old ladies in baggy pants and headscarves, still stooped in the fields, the men still playing backgammon or cards in the local tea garden. There is one shop, a weekly market and one brunch restaurant of great repute within 2 minutes of the house. You can walk to the local supermarket or catch the local bus if you don't want a car. Bodrum is more metropolitan and offers hundreds of restaurants, beach bars and night clubs, as well as its Crusader castle, amphitheatre and Mausoleum. there is a museum of maritime and land archeology many shops and markets to choose from. Some great beaches in Bitez, Kargi and Yahsi. Yalikavak is a quiet and steady village still retaining its local status, in high season there are plenty of restaurants of all styles and budgets, a few bars and long beaches with free loungers and umbrellas. The best fish restaurants in the area to be found in Geris. Gundogan is charming harbour village with great beaches, many bars and a mosque seconds from the waves! Amazing rock formations and high hills and mountains separate the areas, there are still lush pine forests and cool walks offering fantastic views across the coast to the Greek Islands beyond.
