The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Aegean Sea resort town settled in 1,000 B.C and named Halicarnassus, has one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Turkey is one place to which the phrase "East meets West" really applies. Although 97% of Turkey's landmass is in Asia, Turkey began facing West politically in 1923, when Atatürk founded the modern republic. He transformed the remnants of the shattered Ottoman Empire into a secular state with a Western outlook.
The legacies of the Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, and numerous other civilizations have made Turkey a vast outdoor museum. The most spectacular of the reconstructed classical sites are along the Aegean Coast, stretching from the northern border with Greece south to Bodrum. The treasures include the 3,000 year old ruins of Troy, the ruins of the fabled city of Pergamum, on its windswept hilltop; and the magnificent temples, colonnaded streets, and theater in Ephesus. The Aegean Coast also lures travelers with long stretches of magnificent sandy beaches. Its pine clad hills are punctuated by old port villages, Foça, Çesme, Kusadasi, Bodrum some of which have been reincarnated as modern resorts with sophisticated facilities for travelers. Turkeys Aegean coast is beautiful, historic and agriculturally rich. Here are some highlights starting from north to south:
Gallipoli: momentous battles during World War I, and poignant monument-strewn battlefields today. Çanakkale: on the Dardanelles, your base for visits to Troy and the Gallipoli battlefields.
Troy: once thought to exist only in legend, the walls of Troy have been excavated and restored and made into a movie.
Assos: Charming seaside hamlet facing lesvos in the shadow of a hilltop Temple to Athena, perfect for a getaway.
Kütahya: Known for its beautiful coloured glazed tiles and pottery, this city also has several fine old buildings and, on its outskirts, a well-preserved Roman temple at Aizanoi.
Izmir: Turkey's third largest city is mostly modern, with good hotels, great seaside restaurants, an interesting bazaar, a few museums and archeological remains (map).
Ephesus: (Selçuk): the best-preserved classical city on the Mediterranean, a must-see.
Kusadasi: bustling seaside resort and cruise ship port near Ephesus.
Pamukkale: Hot calcium-laden mineral waters ripple over a cliff to form cascades of gleaming white stone at this spa inland near Denizli. You can even swim in the water! Stop at Roman Aphrodisias, City of Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, on the way to Pamukkale from Ephesus.
Bodrum: Picturesque resort on two small bays divided by a crusader castle, a favourite yachting port noted for its exuberant nightlife.
