The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
In the natural harbour of Mandalya bay lies the traditional village of Bogazici. This is the unique point where Tuzla Lake unites with the sea in the Gulf of Gulluk.
Tuzla is famous as a natural sanctuary for birds. The Pelican is among the most frequent, while another common site is the Great White and Little Egret. Between the months of October and April, Greater Flamingos flock to the area by the thousand. The flora and fauna provides a spectacular backdrop, especially in the spring.
Tuzla also holds an important place in history. Ruins of the ancient city of Bargilia, including a Roman temple, can be seen scattered over this area of breathtaking beauty and calm.
All this and yet close enough to enjoy the thrills of Bodrum!
Bodrum / Tuzla area
Bodrum is a vibrant town which boasts a wealth of shops, cafes, fish restaurants and more. A shoppers paradise, look out for the tiny shops selling leather, jewellery and beachwear. If it's Turkish Culture you're looking for head for the local bazaar or wander the narrow streets for souvenirs. The lively port and yacht marina has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and a lively night-life, often referred to as the St Tropez of the eastern Aegean. A peaceful contrast is the sight of the fishing boats bobbing amongst the locally built wooden gulets of all sizes, some offer state of the art facilities. The focal point of Bodrum is the magnificent 15th-century castle of St Peter with the Mausoleum resting close by – known as one of the seven wonders of the world! For those of you looking for a bit of adventure why not try Scuba diving in the turquoise waters or if that's not your style then take time out at the Turkish baths opposite the bus terminal. Bodrum boasts the largest outdoor disco in Europe (Halikarnas)
A short distance from the centre of town you will find golf, tennis, horse riding, a theme park, a sports centre.
On top of all this the layers of dazzling cube-shaped, white-washed houses rise up from the harbour creating what is Villa Leila.
Another interesting place to visit is the town of Yalikavak. It has a large bay producing an array of the most delicious fish. Why not spoil yourself for a change? You can sit at a table right on the edge of the water with waiter service that is second to none. Don't miss the Octopus, it really is delicious!
There is a daily ferry service to Kos, you can book your ticket on the day along the harbour front. Or why not try catching a boat to one of the many lovely coves nearby, some of which are practically deserted?
Quaint fishing boats are another option for the day. Excursions offered from Bodrum centre are Ephesus, Pamukkale, Hierapolis, Milas Carpet Village, Thermal Mud Baths, Amphitheatre and more...
