The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The Aegean Coast of Turkey has garnered the reputation of being one of the most exciting destinations in Turkey. Containing a staggering wealth of historic sites, Turkeys inexpensive Aegean makes a marvellous introduction to both ancient and modern Turkey.
Picturesque Bodrum boasts hopping nightlife, a crusader castle, the tomb of King Mausolus (one of the ancient wonders of the world) and is located within 2-3 hours drive of Ephesus and Pammukale. A short ferry ride brings you to Kos and Rhodes islands, Greece. The locals are renowned for their warmth & hospitality.
The Bodrum / Gumbet area
Gumbet, so called because of the numerous white domed cisterns in the area, features one of the longest sandy beaches on the peninsula, popular with sun-worshipers and watersport enthusiasts alike. Its crescent shaped sheltered bay is lined with large hotels, bars and restaurants.
At the far end of the beach is the jetty where dozens of Gulets depart on their daily cruises. Parallel to the bay is the main street. By day this is fairly quiet but at night it transforms into a hive of activity with its bright lights, bar, restaurants and disco bars. Gumbet, it has to be said, is one of the most vibrant resort on the peninsula and is popular with tourists of many nationalities. Gumbet does, however, offer something for all tastes and age groups.
The Bodrum Peninsula is situated on the south west coast of Turkey and is by far the prettiest area on the South Aegean coastline. The area is steeped in history and this is still evident right across the peninsula. Take time to visit the more obvious sites such as St. Peter’s Castle, The Mausoleum, The Amphi Theatre and Myndos Gate.
The Bodrum Peninsula is unique as it caters for such diverse interests. You can experience traditional Turkish life only minutes away from the hustle and bustle of a modern resort. Closeby, there are many other resorts and charming fishing villages offering peace and tranquillity and white sandy beaches.
In Gumbet & Bitez resorts only, watersport enthusiasts are more than catered for. The resorts here offer parasailing, windsurfing, canoeing, snorkelling, banana boats and ringos. Divers from all over the world enjoy exploring the waters around Bodrum and there is something for both beginners and advanced divers.
Halikarnas in Bodrum centre is a massive open air nightclub with foam parties and top guest DJ's from around the world, and also club Catamaran the floating nightclub that sets sail every night at 1-5 in the morning.
For those of you who would like to play a round of golf , there is a brand new two 18-hole championship Golf Facility at the Vita Park Golf Resort in Tuzla, Bodrum.

We really wasn't sure where to stay in Turkey as there seem to be so many places! We then decided that Gumbet would be a good choice as it was a similar but smaller version of Bodrum. We came across this apartment and the views sold it for us... and they are even better when you get there. The best being a Moon Rise, that's right not a sunrise but watching the Moon rise over the mountains and hills was AMAZING. The caretaker Naim picked us up from the airport, which I deffinately recommend as at least it can get you from A to B without going to C, D & E first like other transfers and companies might. Also petrol prices in Turkey seem to be higher than the UK so it's a good price considering it's about 30-35mins away. We had a couple of problems when we first arrived but these were sorted by Ray & Naim asap. I would like to mention that Ray's communication was spot on, responds quickly & very informative. The Apartment was spacious and had the basic essentials. As mentioned in another review I would agree that the mattress in the main room is pretty hard & the sheets didn't fit, a duvet would have been nice!!! But we still always managed to sleep very well. Luckily there was only two of us so we were able to use the bigger twin room as our 'dressing room' as there isn't too much space in the main room (but hey you spend more time out enjoying Turkey than in!!). There is a fairly steep hill up to the apartment, but after a while we realised this was a good way to burn off all the food & cocktails. The pool was lovely & very clean... And it was never crowded with other people. Gumbet is non-stop party town, but the apartment is at the end so you don't hear the noise unless you're on the balcony... which we came to love in the end! (aaaahhh those views...so amazing!!). There are many restaurants & bars just at the end of the hill and towards the beach. They are sell pretty much the same thing but all have a different atmosphere (try and wingle some of the free cocktails/ food they offer). The Turkish people will love you and become you're best friend! This particularly happened at the Royal! The beach is lovely, but it can get busy so don't expect a unspoiled beach... but its got the atmosphere. The sunbeds are free, but they expect you buy any drinks/food from their restaurant. We did quite a few trips while we were out there. We decided to go to Pammukale for the day as we really wanted to see it. I wouldn't recommend this too much as it was a VERY long coach journey and felt rushed once we got there. However would recommend a trip to Bodrum, the Waterpark, Jeep Safari (was brilliant!!!) & Boat trip is a must. We booked all our trips with 'forget me not' which is just on the way towards the beach. They were lovely there and we got a little discount for booking!! Oh also, don't forget to haggle!!! All the shops expect you to haggle for the items. You never know what discounts you can get. For presents and gifts we generally found after haggling we were paying between 40-60% of the starting price. We also felt the restaurants were reasonable prices, some even offer 20% discounts! I would truly recommend this area & apartment to anyone. As mentioned great location, everything within 10mins walk & excellent views that take your breath away. I wish I could go back tomorrow!!! Response: Thanks a million Amelia for your kind words. I've discussed the mattress and bed linen with the staff onsite and am confident everything will be fine before your next visit if you are considering returning :-) I'm really glad that you both had a nice time, that you found lots to do, apart from pool / beach-side relaxation, and hope to hear from you again in the future anyway. All the best, Ray |

We had a great holiday here. There were lovely views of the town and bay from the appartment. Its a steep climb up the hill from the town, but good for your fitness and worth it for the view. The... more |

Being American & living in Dubai, I didn't know what to expect. Ray, the owner who lives in UK, was very helpful & patient from the start. He always replied to my emails and gave us extra time when the pay pal caused unexpected delays due to my credit cards. He had Naim, the on-site property overseer, pick us up at the Bodrum airport. Our flight was delayed nearly an hour, but Naim was there waiting patiently. Even though we arrived from IST, we (along with a dozen other foreigners) were not allowed to claim our luggage at the domestic terminal, so poor Naim had to drive to int'l terminal 5 minutes away to get us & luggage - but he did so with a smile. The apt is located at the end of the main strip in Gumbet, which is a good thing as the town parties from 11am to 4am daily and though all the action starts just a 5-minute walk down the hill, it is much quieter here than other locations. If you keep all the windows open, you'll still hear some music, but with AC, no. The apt is up quite a steep driveway, which is rather dark at night, so a small flashlight comes in handy. You do not need a car since the walk is short, and the dolmus buses pass frequently at the bottom of the driveway to take you anywhere in Gumbet or Bodrum. The apt is exactly as portrayed: stunning views, good-sized K/DR/LV, decent sized bedrooms and stunning views. Blackout shutters worked in all rooms. The pool is large and very clean - u just have to walk out the apt to the left, take a side street on the left & up a little ways left again - 3-4 minutes max. Be careful on the steps into the water - they have sharp edges, and it's easy to bruise your legs. There are comfy chairs and umbrellas around the main pool, and there is a small kiddie one as well. The fridge was clean & cold & all the extras (mw, oven, toaster, etc) worked. It's normal for the oven to make a venting noise for a while after using. Some pans need replacing. AC units cold & strong. Bathroom small but decent. When we arrived, the shower head was broken and both bathroom lights were out. All I did was put a note on Naim's car (we couldn't call as our cells didn't work there, but we did have his #) and within an hour, Naim was there. He had all 3 replaced that afternoon. Minor issues: Matress in the main br was not too comfy, and the sheets didn't fit properly, so we moved to the room with 2 beds instead - it had the better breeze anyway. Power outages happened several mornings a week between 5-8am and usually lasted 1-2 hours. The issue for us was that the AC stopped, so it got hot, and I couldn't figure out how to open the electric roll down shutters in the 2nd bedroom or to the balcony, so we couldn't get any air in the place. This was not a building issue, but a Turkey issue! In terms of location - you can't do much better. All you have to do is walk down the driveway and all of Gumbet is at your disposal. At the bottom of the drive/hill, there is a little minimart on the left (H2O, milk, OJ, eggs, fruit, snacks, suntan lotion, etc), a mom & pop restaurant on the right (just before the Zetas taxi) that has the best shwarma raps, and the Bronze rest/bar on the corner has good food and UK sports all day & nite. If you take the main street to the left, you hit all of Gumbet. If you take the street after the Bronze bar & across from the Zetas taxi/Asterlik Hotel, you find a classier, quieter street with very nice restaurants. Go to Arya restaurant for their steaks. Just past that, on the left, are a few wilder bars. We loved My Moon - a bunch of young Turkish guys will treat you like long lost family, dance for you, with you, on top of you (they sometimes get on the chairs and hang from the rafters!) & just make you laugh with their line dances and silly antics. If you walk all the way to the beach, all of the restaurants in both directions serve dinner all evening. To get to the beach, just walk str8 down the street. We hung out at the 2nd beach bar on the left called A-Lora (pink cushions). They are known for their afternoon foam party which takes place in the main bar - not on the beach. Sit in Hassan's section - chairs are free, and he never bothers you to buy anything. We always ate lunch & had a few drinks there - get anything chicken & you can't go wrong. As for day trips - BEWARE. Going to Kos, Greece, Ephesus or Pamukkale for ONE day is not a good idea - many hours on buses or trying to clear customs and immigration in both directions. Best thing is to take overnight trips. Well worth time & effort. Hope this helps. We spent 2 great weeks and can't wait to return. Response: Thanks for your review Rob, I'll replace the pans and bed-linen in time for your next visit (should you decide to return :-) ). I guess the power outages are a fact of life in Turkey at certain times of the day during the peak months. The proximity to beach, bars, restaurants, shops & children's play areas and hospital, particularly in other areas of the peninsula, is often overlooked when choosing accomadation. The abilty of onsite staff, to respond quickly to guests' problems, is always difficult to gauge beforehand so hopefully your review will alleviate people's anxiety in this regard. Cheers!! |
