¼ mile from the centre of Blisland is a beautiful place described in Country Life as 'near perfect'. A lovely listed 17th cent. manor house (the owners' home, used in the making of films) and, in its grounds, a long barn converted into three cottages called Tom, Dick and Harry. The cottages share lawns (tables/chairs, barbecue for each cottage) on three sides - one walled, one large with granite-pillared swing and trees. Beyond them, park-like field with massive plane tree slopes to stream (tiddlers) with island. In all, 30 acres (sheep, cattle) for exploring: woods with unusual trees, the remains of a Victorian water garden, grotto and Celtic crosses (medieval pilgrims en route to Falmouth, ship and Santiago de Compostela stopped here). Masses of space. Barn available for parties and weddings - ask us for details. One-hundred yard drive leads from a lane to the cottages (which are completely hidden from it). Barn with washing machines and tumble driers (extra), freezer. Spring water. No pets between 18 July and 29 August. The two smaller cottages are split-level.... Tom (white door on right in picture) has open-plan living (woodburner, TV/DVD/video)/dining/fitted kitchen (slimline dishwasher, microwave). Upstairs, two bedrooms – a double (5' bed), and a twin (limited clothes-hanging space); bathroom (suite plus bath-shower); and door to larger lawn.

Each cottage has its own distinct character. All relaxed, charming.

The West Country region

Cornwall's north coast: from the river Camel north to Bude and on to Morwenstow and the highest cliffs in the West Country, it is a mixture of great cliffs and beaches. Walking (coast path) and bird-friendly cliffs (usually no road near): peregrines possible. Great sand/surf beaches at Polzeath, Trebarwith, Widemouth Bay, Bude and Sandy Mouth; sandy coves at Port Gaverne, Bossiney, Crackington Haven, Duckpool, and others less accessible; Rock, also sandy, is the place for watersports, including sailing on the Camel estuary; very fine golf course (St Enodoc); mini-fjords at Port Quin and Boscastle. Port Isaac is very pretty round its cliff-enclosed harbour.

The well-worth-riding Camel Trail cycleway (bicycles for hire) follows the river Camel from Bodmin Moor to Padstow. Pencarrow is a beautiful house with wonderful garden. Tintagel has a ruined castle (King Arthur's?) on a wild headland. St Juliot church was restored by Thomas Hardy and 'a pair of blue eyes' nearly fell down a Crackington cliff. Bodmin Moor, its highest hills quite mountainous, is only a little way inland and Blisland, on its northern edge, is one of Cornwall's prettiest villages - makes a change from sea: so does lovely Lanhydrock (see Cornwall's 'Med'). Not far to Eden (see South Cornwall).

Bodmin

Blisland: attractive village (old cottages, good pub, PO/shop/internet café, medieval church) around a green in wooded farmland below the western edge of Bodmin Moor. Nearby, the River Camel (trout/salmon fishing and Camel Trail cycleway). The sea at Port Isaac, 9 miles, or Polzeath (sand/surf beach) and Rock (watersports), 12. Bodmin (town), 5.

"four happy travellers"

We made a great choice in selecting “Tom” at Lavethan House for our one week visit to Cornwall. Firstly Blisland is perfectly located, being pretty well equidistant between the North and the South… More

Thank you for your lovely comments which we're sure other holidaymakers will find very helpful too. We're delighted you had such a good time and enjoyed this super holiday home. Best wishes, HH.
