The Sussex Bonfire season is well underway, the locals are taking to the streets in costumes, armed with flaming torches to ward off evil spirits before the dark winter season begins. A tradition thought to have pre-dated the gunpowder plot by hundreds of years. This is a must see event for anyone who has never experienced it before. We have cottages tucked away in the majority of villages and historical towns that host such events, so why not come and stay with us and be part of this traditional event for yourselves.
The Sir Paul Gooderham a Showman's Carriage has recently been totally refurbished, affording welcoming and sumptuous accommodation for holiday guests, available for the first season in March 2014. The Sir Paul Gooderham is a sister Showman's Carriage to the already popular The Prince Regent which is close by and also overlooks the valley to Bodiam Castle. These can be booked together to provide the perfect combination for two couples wishing to spend time together. Steam railway enthusiasts can not only travel on the nearby Kent and East Sussex railway but also stay in a beautifully converted vintage carriage offering a real wow factor and also an ideal gift for that special celebration or occasion.
The Sir Paul Gooderham is surrounded by stunning countryside and is within walking distance of the local pub offering a warm welcome and great food. Bodiam Castle, alongside the River Rother, comes straight out of a medieval fairy tale, complete with drawbridge, moat and original wooden portcullis. It is now maintained by the National Trust. Enough of the interior ruins survive to give an impression of castle life and allow visitors to walk where the knights once walked. At the beginning of the last century the lovely area around Bodiam was full of hop gardens, producing hops for Guinness, and where Londoners came with their children to harvest the vines.
The Sir Paul Gooderham overlooks the sweeping valley and cider orchards across to Bodiam Castle. It has been carefully and thoughtfully renovated in true original vintage style offering etched windows, the warmth of the oak interior cladding but with those luxury modern extras such as two televisions, iPod docking station, well-appointed kitchen and a large shower room.
Approach The Sir Paul Gooderham via steps to a large decked sitting area that surrounds the front of the carriage with spectacular views to Bodiam Castle - perfect for 'al fresco' dining. Carriage doors lead into a cosy living area with feature fireplace housing gas 'woodburner'. The mirrors, windows and lighting all reflect that romantic bygone era of the steam railway.
The small well-appointed kitchen with microwave, hob and fridge is at one end and the luxurious double bedroom with ample storage is at the other. A sliding door leads from the bedroom to the “snug” room which has comfy seating around another gas 'woodburner' and a coffee table. Either enjoy this room in the winter, snug in front of the fire or open the floor to ceiling windows and doors, and soak up the summer sun whilst gazing at the fantastic panoramic view over the valley to Bodiam Castle. The spacious 'Moulin Rouge' shower room leads off the “snug” room and has a shower, WC and basin with mirror.
The covered veranda offers views into the valley and across to Bodiam Castle and the cider orchards. There are two comfortable chairs and a table for a relaxing breakfast or evening glass of wine. There is also a charcoal BBQ, perfect for outdoor dining. The welcome basket provides a selection of local produce.
