About this location
The Cumbria region
The Lake District is the honeypot for most people but the northern reaches of Cumbria have even more to offer. The cottage is ideally situated for easy journeys to the coast and the Solway Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for example. Silloth, Allonby and Maryport each have their own charm, for the watersport, walking, wildlife and tranquillity.
Or why not venture to the North Pennines AONB for wild landscapes, Cross Fell being the highest point of the Pennine Chain. Alston and Appleby are two villages of character well worth visiting. In this backdrop runs the famous Settle to Carlisle railway where you can travel in style on one of the many steam specials which visit the area.
Hop over the border to Dumfries & Galloway for a memorable day out, Gretna Green and Annan offer diverse interests or just a little further is Kippford an amazing village with good pubs, walks and views. You will find the climate around the Solway Firth very different with plenty of sunny days when the rest of northern England is shrouded in mist, the sunsets around here are truly amazing.
If cities are your thing try Carlisle with its established Roman connection, Tullie House is the place to go or amble around the magnificent Cathedral and for the shopper the Lanes offers diversity. From Carlisle you can catch the AD122 bus which follows Hadrian's Wall and stops off at many, if not all, the fabulous historic Roman remains.
If it is adventure you are looking for then Keswick is the best destination. Mountain Biking, Gyhll Scrambling, Guided Walks, Climbing and Canoeing are all well catered for. Derwentwater is Keswick's lake, enjoy a cruise around or hire a rowing boat or simply walk the full lake round.
The splendid market town of Cockermouth is one of the jewels of northern Cumbria. A vibrant place to visit with its connection to William Wordsworth and the National Trust owned property, Wordsworth House his place of birth, is well worth a visit.
Many shops in the town are independently run with a huge diversity of outlets and you can be assured a friendly welcome. Good restaurants, pubs, cafes and bistros allow the choice for a pleasant lunch or dinner an easy decision to make.
Located on the very edge of the National Park it makes for a prime stop off point when making your way to the quieter side which is the Western Lake District. A short drive away are the quiet lakes of Crummock Water, Buttermere and Ennerdale Water, all supremly tranquil and perfect for walks through areas with abundant wildlife.
